Don't get me wrong, GI Joe RAH was everything to me as a child. It's just that the Pimp Daddyness of Pimp Daddy Destro is just very overwhelming and absurdly hilarious I just can't contain myself. Seriously, this figure deserves a trap song dedicated to it.:lolol:lolol:lolol

It's a thing about the Joe fandom that I find a little perplexing. There's a large push amongst a section of fans to make these figures more Real-World Military, more Gritty. (The casual insult is to compare the designs to Fortnite, as though a toy company basing some of the aesthetic of their toys for children on the most successful piece of children's entertainment available isn't the smartest thing they could as a company.)

But, like, Joe was always a mix of Military and Absurdity. Destro is a guy in a metal mask and no shirt: he's not someone you want to 100% take seriously! These are slightly goofy concepts! They always have been! It's not a flaw!

And like I said, it DESPERATELY NEEDS and deserves its own trap song. Heck I'd have it on infinite loop. :lolol

It's just a thing I've seen on other boards, where folks fold their arms at Funny Joe, and like, have they just not been seeing part of the Joe waveform or something? Sgt Slaughter and the Fridge were canonical Joe members! This franchise has a baked-in sense of humor about itself! I don't know why I'm shouting about this in the How is Everyone Today thread!

Replace "GI Joe" with "Power Rangers" and you have my same confusion at the section of fanbase that demands gritty, R-Rated Power Rangers.

You know, until this comment, I never quite understood the appeal of G.I. Joe. As far as I was concerned it was just military guys fighting watered-down versions of international terrorists. And people aiming for a more gritty push reinforced this thought in my head.

You just blew my mind. All of a sudden everything makes sense to me. I feel enlightened.

Now, where do I start in entering the franchise?

That actually exists as an adult video if I recall. It's been a few years. Thank goodness I forgot what it was called because THAT SCARRED ME.

So, not a dude who's very dialed-in to that fandom, but I'd probably recommend the original Marvel comics. The thing about GI Joe is, it's basically a mix of superheroes and soldiers? All of the GI Joe stuff was designed by Marvel creators. (A lot of it was pinched from an unused SHIELD series!) The codenames, the special skills, the colorful costumes: that shit's all superhero stuff. Assuming you're someone who likes a mix of soap opera, action, colorful designs, and a lighter sense of danger (aka a toku fan), I think the Marvel comics could be fun.

The huge caveats are a) I read those as a kid and can't vouch for their quality to an adult, b) I'm not a big Joe guy so I can't speak with any deep knowledge, c) I'm not even saying it's a worthwhile franchise to dive into.

Maybe some other members who are more invested in Joe can give a recommendation?

I always find it stupid and funny that you will have people that will be like "Being Dark, Gritty and Edgy is overrated. Stuff that is kiddish and stupid can be just as smart and mature" and yet they will be like "We need an R rated Power Rangers".

If you want an R rated Power Rangers, you could watch Gantz instead. If you want an R rated G.I Joe, you can always watch something like Jarhead instead. Somethings are better off being only for kids. Same with stuff aim towards adults.

Does anybody have a Master Grade and a Hot Toys (preferably Iron Man)? I wanna know how they scale. I always assumed Hot Toys are the same size as a general Master Grade, but Hot Toys does seem to be taller.


I'm the first part, but I do not want an R rated Power Rangers. That Adi Shankar short film, even though it was meant to parody the idea of companies making darker and edgier reboot, is an example of how not to do darker reboot.

Power Rangers needs to stay as a kids show, but I don'y want them to be exclusive to kids, but appealing to all ages, like Avatar, Clone Wars and even Young Justice (except season 3 bevause that is clearly R-rated).

I would say I want it to be like the CW Arrowverse, but then I remembered I dropped the Arrowverse due to them being too soap opera.

Personally I grew up with the Sunbow animated G.I.Joe show so I will recommend that. The big battles are always great because they are just huge laser tag battles. :lolol

What does said subsect of the G.I.Joe fandom think of the IDW comics? Cause those seem like the thing that would satisfy their preferences, and as much as I love the Sunbow and Dic cartoons for all its goofyness, I am also a fan of those comics.

From an outside observer's perspective, they are characteristically unhappy.

If a series tries to be inclusive or progressive there's a backlash, which is what's happening with the current GI Joe comic. (HissTank chased Paul Allor off the boards! The guy who writes the GI Joe comic was made to feel unwelcome on a GI Joe fan forum!)

However, they also don't care much for the current ARAH run, which is written by the guy who wrote all of the classic comics. They think it's gotten too goofy and unrealistic, which, amazing to me!

Literally the only IDW thing I've ever seen that fanbase appreciate is the (generally well-regarded even outside the fandom!) Mike Costa stuff, specifically his Chuckles stories. Everything else just bugs them.

I think it's a mix of wanting an unapologetically might-makes-right military adventure series that would have an incredibly narrow audience in 2020, so media companies ain't exactly bending over backwards to accommodate them; and an inability to realize how much their nostalgia means that they're trying to recapture a specific childhood experience that is gone forever.

It's sad! I'm honestly sad for them as fans! They're a dwindling audience clinging to an unpopular franchise, and yet every attempt by Hasbro (or IDW) to grow the fanbase with new ideas is greeted with hostility. Some of them got real real mad at Hasbro making new Joe figures because the designs were modern and the figures were in a more popular scale! NEW FIGURES made them yell at each other! Exclamation marks!!!

Hell I'd argue that Fortnite is based in no small part on G.I. Joe. One outfit is Legally Distinct Firefly for crying out loud.

But yeah, when you have a franchise that's built on equal parts reasonably authentic military hardware and stuff like the friggin' Trouble Bubble, you can't complain when it decides to bring in some goofy and absurd stuff. Like my personal favorite, the Toxo Zombie.

That's something that kind of bugged me as I was on my way out the door years ago. People started turning their noses up at the franchise and became less Joe fans and more "1/12 scale enthusiasts" obsessed with recreating stuff at the scale- that they used Joes was just a matter of convenience.

Depends on how you like your drama/goofy ratio. I started in the Joe vs. Cobra era in the early 2000s so the SpyTroops and Valor vs. Venom movies are where I started. There's also Renegades if you're looking for a completely different interpretation of the setup- Basically The A-Team vs. OCP. And of course the original Marvel run under Larry Hama are considered holy scripture- for good reason. They're well-written, hold up alarmingly well, and Hama himself penned the filecards for most of the characters through the height of the line.

I totally agree and I feel like the idea of taking something for kids to be R rated is dumb. It would be no different if someone made The Punisher into a G rated movie. I do feel like Power Rangers chances to appeal to a wider audience outside of young kids have sadly sailed. It had its chances with the 2017 movie and failed.

I have seen people that want an R rated He-Man and I'm like "Go read and watch Conan the Barbarian". You have stuff similar to PR, GI Joe, He-Man, etc for a mature audience that exists.

Finally made it into my new home in Vegas.

Due to the move from Fox to Hulu I ordered up Series 2 of The Orville which will be in on the 8th. After this I'll be watching new episodes on DVD.

Star Trek Picard from CBS All Access gets a DVD release for Series 1 soon.

Hopefully Netflix will have Cobra Kai Series 3 on DVD.

Met up with one of my friends today. Glad he's doing well during this outbreak.

Really frustrated with Hobbylink Japan. The site was down for maintenance yesterday, but I was charged this morning for an item I had pre-ordered and can no longer log into my account. How the hell can I ship the item I paid for if I can't even log into their site? I had other items in my Private Warehouse too.

I'm also pissed you can't sort by release date anymore.

Yeah, it seems decent just based on the few clips I saw a while back. They managed to make a movie and a sequel too if I'm not mistaken. Also they got GACKT the singer who sang the Kamen Rider Decade theme song and Tetsuo Kurata from Kamen Rider BLACK as guest appearances at one point.

I had this nightmare last night where I was stuck in this old creepy abandoned school building at night and I was trying to get out. It got creepy when I was being chased by some furry animatronics.

The scariest part was when I stopped being chased by furry animatronics and was being chased by Build Hazard Form instead. No I'm not making that up, I actually dreamt I was being chased by Kamen Rider Build Hazard Form in a dark creepy abandoned school building. Those glowing eyes are scary!

Total sidenote, I recently found out that Square-Enix didn't think Nomura's' design for Batman was hilarious enough, so they're having him design Marvel characters now.

They're what anyone who's seen his Batman would expect, but I actually like like his design for the Iron Spider and how it incorperates elements from both the Comic and MCU versions of the suit.

I just think it's insane that they priced it at $135!! Seriously, in no way is the figure worth that much, especially due to how little it comes with. If it dips to like, $70 or less on the aftermarket, then yeah, I'll buy it, but until then, nah, that's just greedy, Square.

You know that moment you feel you should be feeling a certain emotion but you just…can’t?

Oh yeah, the price on bring arts is flipping absurd! They don't even have double jointed elbows and knees, and the QC is not that great too! (both my kh 3 Sora and Riku have had somesort of QC problem).

I still plan on buying the KH ones, but that's more because I don't really have many choices.
