The fact that nobody ever mentions the world-dooming suicide attempt ever again (while simultaneously everyone, villains and heroes included, talk about how selfless and perfect Serenity is) is evidence of the sloppy writing Naoko considered "romantic". Crystal is really plugging that they'll make the future "different from the past" and that "Usagi is Usagi, regardless of her past life" similar to how PGSM did, so I really hope the second suicide is changed, but I'm still not hopeful. I HATE that the only reason the world wasn't destroyed was because the Crystal kept a suicidal Usagi alive, rather then the world actually being saved because Sailor Moon is even slightly heroic. That's one of the many things that shows that the original anime's characterization was so much better then manga's. Compare the two Dark Kingdom finales. In one, Usagi watches as each of her friends are slaughtered one by one protecting her until eventually she is forced to kill a brainwashed Mamoru herself. Instead of curling in a ball and giving up, she stands up and fights and using her own power saves the world from Metalia, even though it takes absolutely everything she has. In the manga, Mamoru is similarly killed during the climactic battle with Metalia, but instead of standing strong and saving the world she stabs herself in the stomach while her (all still living) friends who have given up everything to protect her howl and beg for her not to. She only defeats Metalia because the Crystal resurrects her and Mamoru's dead bodies so that they can use their powers together. It's just... Nope. I could never forgive Usagi for that and for the rest of the manga I just rolled my eyes and sighed every time another character told us how Serenity was perfect and selfless and strong and yadayada, which was all the time. |
It's never mentioned again because Usagi not growing up as a princess made her a better person. She is still selfish, but she cares about her friends and family, which she clearly did not before. Usagi also matures as the story goes on.

More good news. The new dubbed episodes, at least episodes 24 through 36 anyway, are now available to watch on Hulu. Awesome. Keep it up, Viz Media! :D

I hate to say it, but I thought today's episode of Crystal was awful. The animation was choppy to the point where sometimes it looked like it was stuttering, the pacing was bad, it felt rushed, and it made very little sense.
