I think Ghost might be a good first rider for fans of superhero shows on the CW. It has the same whiny but likable protagonist; bright secondary characters, often overshadowing him and even episodes begin with "My name is ..."

If you love comedies and good characters are more important to you than the plot, then you won`t find a better show. But I must warn you that the final villain there, in my opinion, is the worst in the entire franchise.

I'm watching the original Kamen Rider on Tokushoutsu and I really enjoy how "raw" the fights are compared to what we have now.

Ghost was actually my first Rider series and I absolutely loved it. I convinced a friend of mine to watch it and she loved it as well. Looking back, there were a lot of issues and it's probably the worst Rider I've seen, but I thought it was a great intro. The early arcs reminded me a lot of Dragon Ball with the eyecon collecting, and then Alain arc had me absolutely hooked. The ending was pretty weak, but I still enjoyed watching it all the way through and am glad it was my first series.

Well that's disappointing to hear, since I tend to prefer a gripping story over good character development or comedy. But Den-O is my favorite Rider design and I liked the actor in Rurouni Kenshin, so I'd like to still watch it some day.

For me, the Ghost is at the bottom of the list, but definitely not the worst.

How is Power Rangers "dying?" Theres no reason to think that.

And why would Kamen Rider take its place? If one adapted tokusatsu show went away, why would another similar show be what replaced it?

I'm not against a fanfictoney adaptation thing as a creative project, but if that's your reason behind it, it doesn't make sense.

And even if Power Rangers did die (which it probably won't) and even if Kamen Rider did replace it (which it definately won't) it's not like whoever was making the new adaptation would pick anyone on this site (or the whole internet) to write it.

Again if you want to write a hypothetical Kamen Rider adaptation, go ahead. It's good to be creative, that's like my whole thing. But if you're only doing it because you think you're going to replace Power Rangers with it, then I have to ask where you got that Idea in the first place.

I remember I was able to get someone into Ghost while it was still airing/finishing airing and they genuinely enjoyed it.

Which I consider a fun little badge of honor given how much hate that show attracts. Though also not really since even nowadays I find people go far too comical in their hate/dislike/criticisms with Ghost that I wonder if it really is just a deep personal issue at the end of the day.

Anyway that was mostly just a brief thought on Ghost given the discussion but I did have thoughts on Geats.

Mostly in that I feel as though our standardized Reiwa Clip Show Episode of Geats might end up being the best one out of all of them if they take advantage of the setting their using. Given just, recent revelations and the nature of how Geats is structured, a Clip Show Episode is something that Geats basically has delivered on its lap right now.

To the point where if they do it correctly, they could very well beat out my favorite clip show episode which is the one from Garo Makai no Hana which has a similar concept I'm imagining they could do for Geats.

The actress has a black belt in karate, it would be very unwise not to let her fight. And yes, there is practically no interaction between her and Neon. However, there was almost no interaction between Poppy and Niсo, as well as between Izu and Yaiba. Part of Takahashi's style, I guess.

Well that's sad. I care about friendship & love here. Wish Takahashi had that.

Where did a lot of this come from? Somebody was just speculating as to how Kamen Rider could be adapted if it were. I don't understand why this whole "why would they pick you?" narrative came from, because nobody ever suggested that they would be the ones "replacing" PR.

And honestly, international (especially Asian) content has never been more popular than it is now. If somebody were to adapt it, this would be the time....but it's probably better just to release and promote it in the west with both subtitles and dubs.

They literally said Power Rangers was "dying" and that it was Kamen Rider's "time to shine" after someone asked why they kept thinking up Kamen Rider adaptations. That implied to me that they thought their Ideas are what "should" happen, or at least that they wanted them to happen. Like I said, I'm totally fine with the whole fan-adaptation thing. (Im sure I've thought about it before myself) It's just that explanation for it that felt off to me.

I'll admit that I jumped to a few conclusions. I'm sure they don't actually expect to be hired to write a Kamen Rider adaptation, and I didn't mean to imply that I thought it was wrong to want one. What they said seemed like they thought a Rider adaptation would be replacing Power Rangers in the near future, and I guess I got a bit heated in saying that I thought it wasn't going to happen.

I think the bolded part is where it went off. I suppose I can see your train of thought - I live in an artsy part of LA, so every coffee shop here is full of people trying to write stuff for Hollywood productions :lol but nothing in henshinzero's post really signaled to me that they wanted to be the one to write it. Rather, it just seem like they want it to happen in general, and enjoy speculating about what it could look like.

Also, I'm with on on thinking PR isn't going away any time soon. If anything, I think it could become bigger again, since Hasbro seems like they're actually trying to make something of it, and not just cashing in on the property.

A lot of it comes from fandom intertia, I think - Ghost is a punchline because it continually gets treated like a punchline, and so if you want an easy joke, that's what you go for. Couple that with fandoms (not just KR) treating something imperfect as the worst thing ever and irredeemable trash, and you have a fanbase that constantly makes the same jokes about Ghost's being unable to eat dinner or whatever. I'm not sure how Western-exclusive this one is, Takeru made a lot of appearances after his show and Saber vs Ghost was a thing (although that's as much because the writer for Saber also did Ghost...)

I think it gets it less now because Zi-O and Saber (and in some places Zero-One) have replaced it by being the easy go-to joke. At the time, Ghost was the worst regarded series of about 5 years (Gaim to Build), so it got it the worst.

EDIT - I think a lot of it also has to do with watching a show weekly making it come of as much worse than someone watching it as a legacy show, and time does heal a lot of bitterness people have. If you're putting all your expectations on the weekly to be the best thing ever, and it's not, you're going to be disappointed and rage, but if it's just another episode in an arc you can watch in a day and appreciate as a whole, both good and bad, it's a different experience.

Yeah, my only issues with Ghost are that it had a weak endgame and Specter didn't really have much depth. Everything else was great, though. I look back on it about as fondly as I do Drive.

Sometimes I don't really understand the tastes of the Toku fandom. Like...I also enjoyed Ninninger, another highly-criticized show. But the thing is...I feel like it's criticized for being weak at things that Sentai doesn't focus on, like having a strong overarching story. No, Sentai is and always has been about the team facing a monster while one member of the team has character development along the way. That's the core of what Sentai is, and that's probably what Ninninger was best at. I don't think Ninninger is an amazing show, but the thing it does right is probably the most important aspect of Sentai as a whole.

Sorry, I know this topic is about Kamen Rider, but Sentai had the best example I could think of.

And speaking about this, aside from primary Rider (Ace vs Keiwa) and secondary Rider (Keiwa vs Michinaga) debate, who is actually the female lead of Geats, Neon or Tsumuri? (no bias)

I thought the primary, secondary, tertiary Riders, etc. are determined by the order of the characters introduced in press conferences. But other than that, the lead heroine is also usually the 3rd introduced after the primary/secondary Riders before the tertiary (e.g. Zero-One had Izu introduced first before Yua, as well as Saber with Mei after Touma and Rintaro). By this I thought Neon is the female lead (doubles as teritary as she's a Rider) as she's introduced the 3rd after Ace and Keiwa, while Tsumuri's introduced after all the main Riders, like Sophia in Saber. Neon also indeed seems to receive more focus than Tsumuri, at least so far.

But there are those who'd view Tsumuri as lead, probably because she gave similar vibes to Poppy or Izu of being inhuman mysterious supporting female, including how there are artworks depicting those 3 together, and that Rider series oftentimes did have the supporting females being made as the lead, above the major female Riders (e.g. Yoko to Mai, Yua to Izu) - so does Geats 'break' the formula again here or I got it wrong?

And previously, despite being well-received, Misora is one of the least physically active female leads despite being portrayed by the athletic Kaho Takada. Dunno about Ayaka (Imoto), but also ironic that the actress that had karate background in Revice was the one portrayed Sakura's friend named... Ayaka (Oketani) instead.

I'm not saying that they will definitely let her fight. I'm just saying that not doing so would be a waste of potential, as in the case of Misora. In Revice, however, the situation is a little different, because the actor can hardly show all his talents for two episodes without overshadowing the main characters and, in principle, the plot of the show.
In terms of importance, Tsumuri is really closer to Sofia for the time being, and her resemblance to Poppy and Izu is rather external. No, I'm sure she has a secret, there will be emotional moments in the future and maybe she'll even get into the next girl crossover, but for now, Geats is more about how Takahashi tries to surprise, and not about trying to film for the third time one scenario.

Here it will be just in time to recall how much criticism Revice received during the broadcast and how it calmed down after the finale. On the one hand, the show screwed up where most show riders screw up. But on the other hand, most other shows didn't screw up that much.

Speaking of Ghost Onari FTW. That man is pure comedy gold. :lolol

That guy was a huge part of why Ghost never worked for me. In hindsight I feel bad for hating the character so much because the actor was fantastic. He did the parts so well.

It just sucks that the parts were annoying and dumb. I never like the super heavy comedy characters; I prefer writing that creates comedy by playing character traits correctly, instead of one big walking "make the funny"-machine.

I won't lie, the thought of giving Ghost a rewatch has occurred to me, to see how I stand on the matter today, but then I remember there are thousands of actually good shows I could watch instead.

I think for me his slapstick moments worked as comedic moments, so while the show does not make my top 10 Kamen Rider shows list it has its moments thanks to Onari. :lolol

But after all, Drive had at least three purely comedic characters in a permanent cast, and for the rest, comedy was created by spitting food. In fact, after such a Ghost, on the contrary, should seem softer in terms of load with humor.
Onari seemed to me sometimes excessive, but he was needed as an antipode to Akari. To be "science against spirituality", "logic against faith", "mind against stupidity", probably. Well, and Akari, if not the best female character in the franchise, then definitely the most useful. Only Izu can compete with her.

I never got the hatred for Onari, personally. Sure, he was loud and wild, but so was everyone in Ghost -- especially during Q1. And while he only ever gave me a laugh here and there, I never found his bits annoying or distracting. Heck, he even gets his own little arc during the show's' run which I thought worked pretty well.

Meanwhile you have characters like, say, Gentoku from Build who not only wildly changed with very little reason, but whose gimmick during the last stretch of Build was one that both actively annoyed me and often got in the way of the more dramatic tone Build was going for.

Gentoku's change from Night Rogue to Kamen Rider Rogue is due to getting rid of the gas (and all the trash that was going on in his miniseries). And between the evil Rogue and Rogue, an ally of Bild, such a "trifle" happened as the death of Gentoku's father in front of him and partly from his fault. I don't really like the direction the character went in myself, but he had good reasons for changing beyond recognition. At least not less than Aruto in the last episodes of Zero-One.

Onari is one of those characters that make or break the show depending on how you view them. His over the top personality is defenitely not for everyone.

Personally, I didn't find him annoying but I wasn't exactly chuckling from his zany antics either.

Onari and Akari are actually my favorite part of Ghost, a show that I think is pretty bad, but still! Onari may be loud and the comedy definitely didn't always land, but in general I found him quite likable and I liked how hard he worked at things, which is great since Ghost's characters often felt wildly inconsistent as the show went on. They did my boy Alain dirty.

Tbh, it's expected on the first place because Akari is a scientist. Fictional intellectuals are on par with superpowers in general, if someone's not physically fit and able, the other main way to shine is being a scientist, they're as valuable as fighters in toku as they can create anything, they're typically the one with greatest contributions in any character role, like protagonists such as Sento, antagonists such as Ryoma, or heroines like Akari you said here. I think to talk about being useful, it's kinda unfair to criticize people who aren't scientists to be not as useful as scientists. I knew from the beginning even when I was annoyed by Akari forcing her scientist beliefs to anyone.

I thought the change by getting rid of the gas only means turning themselves good/better person. Being goofy, ridiculous, and embarassing aren't inherent part of being good though. IIRC it's done due to real life reasons of Gentoku actor's relatives watching the show.

Well, scientists, like fighters, are also can be different. You don't have to look far for an example: Rinna from Drive worked much more for comedy than for practical use. As for scientific beliefs, wasn't she herself being asked to believe in mysticism because of Takeru's transformation into a ghost? Plus, didn?t it turn out at the end that she was right and there was no rational (albeit fantastic) explanation?

Exactly! He's super good up until the show decides his arc is over and he is just going to be funny takoyaki boy, with occasional faint glimmers of what made him so interesting in the first place.
