Just finished watching episode 33 of Blade and once again it's time to seek help from the kind souls of this forums. Before asking, I made sure to make some research trying not to spoil myself while doing so:
My question is related to the Missing Ace movie. I've read that it was shown at cinemas around the time these episodes were released, but it is set 4 years after the end of the battle royale (which I'm in the middle of series-wise) and it showed Blade King form BEFORE the series and it works as an alternate ending for the story. Now, a pretty good advice to rider movies is to watch them inmediately after the episode that aired the week before the movie came out, but since this is an alternate ending and deals with an aftermath...that kind of confuses me. What's more important, I've read at least five or more people mention that you should watch the movie BEFORE the final episodes of the series cause the tv ending is by far superior and watching the movie afterwards left a bad taste in their mouths. So that's basically it: without spoilers, what path should I follow? |

I think none of the Kamen Rider movies until Decade's are relevant to their series.
They're just alternate universe tales and basically "What If" scenarios. |

As was said before: It's not canon, so watch it whenever you feel like it. |

Kamen Rider The First: It's my break between shows so I figured I can get some more movies out of the way between it. I really loved this movie, it was fantastic. I really enjoyed this version of Hongo a lot, he was extremely relatable in this movie with his quiet disposition and how he wanted Asuka to hate him rather to help her out, I really love this Hongo. It got quick to him being turned into the Kamen Rider which was great and quick to him breaking free of being evil too. I loved that part a lot, that it was the beauty of the snow, the water crystals that he has a passion for that broke him free of the mind control not just the love of the woman he cares for. I thought that was just a fantastic scene. This movie was masterful with it's combat Hongo and Ichimonji were both insanely kickass it was unbelievable. This had the motorcycle fights that Kamen Rider definitely needed to have somewhere, that was so freaking cool and amazing. Hayato was different than what I was expecting reminded me a lot of Otoya from Kiva but it was very good and I think it worked well to balance off of Hongo who quiet and reserved with Ichimonji's outspoken and charming personality. I think that the Miyoko and Haruhiko's back story sub plot felt very unneeded I mean yes I felt sympathy for them and there stories however it didn't feel like we needed to really care about these characters if there wasn't going to be more to them. I still liked them though. Though that is really messed up what Shocker did to Hayato though and to all of these people they transformed. This was a very good Kamen Rider movie, this was a great martial arts movie, this was a great superhero movie, just probably not the best modernization of the original series but I am not sure since I haven't seen it. Still this was one of my favorite Kamen Rider movies and can't wait to see The Next.

:eyebrow Yeah, I dunno. Everybody has an opinion, I guess. >shrug<

I know I just posted something denigrating about The First in the new Rider movie thread, but I will say that it actually did have some things that worked pretty well. It's not enough to off-set all the stock Inoue bullshit like the enormous amount of running time devoted to the backstories of throwaway villains, but there were some cool moments. If nothing else, the suit designs were good and the action was pretty topnotch. It's just a pity that the movie doesn't play up those elements more.
That said, The Next is still complete garbage and I doubt even KyoryuGreen will find many redeeming qualities in it (that's no offense to KG, you just seem to find something you absolutely love in damn near everything you watch). |
I still haven't watched The Next yet :lol
|
I wanted to like The First and it was so dull. It was trying to be a darker, modern and gritter version of the original but fails to keep the story interesting. I didn't like the characters and the fight scenes come off as weak to me. I still never seen The Next because I hear nothing but bad things about it.

Or if you really hated V3's origin story and wanted to see it redone as an early '00s J-horror. |

Still not enough to make me rush out and watch The Next though. I've heard the stories. |

Oh also I didn't know Toshiki Inoue did The First, yeah the other unpopular opinion I love all his work I've seen so far lol. So that's actually no surprise there. Well I'm watching the Next today so I'll tell you how it goes. |

Anyways, watched Kamen Rider 15 and 16 last night. I still can't get over the luchadore masks with cacti on them as goon apparel. Also, while I like the new Rider, I miss Hongo. Too bad what's available subbed doesn't cover his return. My favorite part of 15 was when they received the cactus and said "what a great gift!" For some reason that struck me as funny. |
Stronger episode 18.
Intriguing. Tackle in this episode was way more dynamic than she normally is. Usually she does pretty stilted movements and relies on her electric wave toss or whatever (seemingly, as a result of the actress's asthma). I guess they got her a suit actor? She was doing some nicely choreographed moves here, much more involved than usual. Pretty nice. Speaking of, General Shadow is good. He's real good. I like his focused mentality and tendency to shit all over Titan and his plans. It's real good. Definitely my favorite villain of the Showa era thus far. |

Kamen Rider The Next: Well I guess my opinions will continue to boggle the minds of people here as I actually enjoyed this movie. Granted it had it's flaws but they didn't bother me as much. It reminded me a lot of Kamen Rider merged with GARO. We had Green Knights instead of a Golden one lol. The beginning was a bit slow but it got better when Hongo came into it. I really enjoy this version of Hongo so I think that's the main reason I enjoyed this movie. Though I could have lived without the annoying students in his classroom though I'm glad he was able to shut them up later in the movie. Still Hongo's heroics and wanting to help his student that was having problems I enjoyed a lot. I think the horror sub plots were better in this than the random villain sub plot of the first just because this made everything tie in together story wise. This is a very different origin for V3, I know his pretty well and I definitely like the original one better but this was interesting and the one who played Kamen Rider Drake was really good as this version of Shiro. I think all the Riders' actors were fantastic as their versions of Ichigou, Nigou, and V3. The action was great and definitely the highlight of the movie, especially the final battle at the end with the three of them. I could have seen them do a mini-series afterwards to maybe flesh out the characters a little more though and seen what happened with Asuka from the first movie. Ichimonji's death was sad but at least he went out how he lived and didn't die against a random monster, he really was on borrowed time with how the process went for him. I liked Shiro's story and that he found something to fight for and how he turned against Shocker too, I wish they would have went more into why he was working for Shocker though. It would have been cool if they had some form of Riderman in this too. I think they got the core of the characters correct with Hongo fighting to protect people, Ichimonji fighting his heart out to help people, and Shiro fighting for his family. I also love Elseworlds/Parallel Earth stories so this is kind of like Earth-2 for Kamen Rider and I'm fine with it. Kind of sad they didn't continue with a Kamen Rider X one, I would have loved it and an updated King Dark and Apollo Geist would have been awesome too. Overall, I thought this was pretty good, I liked the First better and definitely not the worst Kamen Rider movie I've seen. That was a fun ride, I'll probably watch them again sometime.

I think you enjoyed it just to spite everybody :p
Anyway, I'm currently watching Beast Wars (For no reason), but I'mma start downloading Hibiki and watch that once I finish the Transformers show. Any TV-N quirks or mistranslations I should be aware of? |

Eh. Blade is my favorite series and it's sub's video quality is 144p at it's best, so it's fine.

And yes, yes, episode 29. I'm so curious as to how a show can drastically decline in quality. I don't know if I should heed your advice and enjoy the 29 good episodes, or just power forward and (Possibly) regret doing so... |
I enjoyed Hibiki after Episode 29, but I also enjoyed Kamen Rider the Next lol.
Though however my expectation were made low by everyone else that both Hibiki after 29 and The Next weren't as bad as everyone else said so I ended up enjoying them a lot lol. |
Well, you enjoy everything, so it's a different case.
