Dynasty and Triangle star Kate O'Mara dies aged 74

Her stories might have been mostly terrible, but I really liked the Rani as a character and Kate O'Mara was really great to the fandom. Hard to believe this has happened when she was only at the 50th convention last year. RIP.

Oh damn, I liked her...

That is a darned shame. She was excellent, even when the stories were not. She'll be missed by fandom as well as those close to her.

In other Doctor Who news, if you haven't seen them, the Horror Channel is having a Doctor Who marathon this weekend with the first seven doctors. There's going to be:

Attack of the Cybermen
Rememberance of the Daleks

If you haven't seen any classic episodes, these (from the ones I've seen) are pretty good, and it's not as if there's much else to watch.

Well, I watched the Mind Robber over the weekend. It was trippy as hell. I think I got what was happening, though, and Troughton's Doctor seemed likeable. He's not one of my favourites, but I still like him.

I watched The Three Doctors yesterday, and it was pretty good. THe bickering between the 2nd and 3rd Doctors did put me off slightly, but I'm really liking the Brig. Anyone have any good episodes involving him (please don't just say all of them)

Web of Fear since its his first appearance (and just come back into the archives so its a big deal) and The Invasion since its his first outing as the Brig. Those are both 2nd Doctor though.

As for the third, you have the pick of his first 3 seasons as he's a regular in them. I want to say all of them (:p) but I'd say these are my personal recommendations:
Spearhead from Space
Doctor Who and the Silurians
Inferno
Terror of the Autons
The Claws of Axos
The Daemons

Then in the Fourth's run, Robot and Terror of the Zygons

He appears with the Fifth in Mawdryn Undead (but that isn't too great) and The Five Doctors alongside the Second again.

Then finally he appears with the Seventh in Battlefield, which is fun if flawed.

I've seen the Five Doctors (many times :D), Battlefield, Claws of Axos and Spearhead from Space, and I have the Daemons recorded. I need to check out Inferno though. Didn't that come out of Special Edition last year sometime?

We're finally getting a female director again. Rachel Talalay, the director of (among other things) Tank Girl, is helming the upcoming episode block.

Yup, it's been speculated to be near Autumn/Fall for a while now. The original speculation was September, so August is actually pretty good.

BBC doesn't really do re-runs here. It's on and then its off again.

That should put a stop to people dissecting every last set picture in an attempt to convince themselves that the sonic screwdriver is somehow subtly different now. :lol

I don't think it'll last. Given how much of a big seller the toy is over here and that this is supposedly coming out in the next month or so, I reckon this is just a placeholder to get a "new" toy on shelves and a proper one may come later.

Well, either that or they simply don't care about toy sales as much anymore. Which would suit me fine if this wasn't the design they settled on :lol

Just strikes me as odd is all. Almost immediately (by the end of his first episode) 11 had a brand new Sonic all built and ready to go for him from the Tardis. I don't think it's too much to ask for that they have a new sonic prepared for 12.

Eleven came in with a new showrunner, though. Nine and Ten used the same sonic just fine. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a new one at some point, but I wouldn't count on it, at least not this series. There were rumors we were getting a new TARDIS exterior, too, and that didn't seem to pan out. I'm not saying I wouldn't like him to get a new one, I definitely would. Matt's mannerisms with the sonic sort of seal the design to him, at least without having seen Capaldi at it.

I don't buy that. Moffat saw fit to introduce a new one for War/Other Doctor. Despite the fact that at the end when he regenerated he was becoming 9 and therefor would have had the 9/10 Sonic. So he had a different Sonic before becoming 10 basically just to differentiate that Doctor from 10 & 11 since they were present alongside him in the movie. I don't see why he couldn't introduce an actually new one or something at least partially different to give Capaldi one unique to his 12.

In the context of the story, it makes sense for Eccleston to have gotten a new Sonic to disassociate himself from the War Doctor, considering the Doctor's feelings for that iteration.

All of that is really academic when it boils down to the fact that apparently Moffat didn't want to give Capaldi's Doctor a new Sonic Screwdriver for some reason. It's always possible that he'll get one down the road, but I don't think he needs one at this point. Considering all the weeping and gnashing of teeth about Capaldi from the crowd who came on board during Tennant's era, I wouldn't be surprised if they're deliberately keeping some things the same to subtly reinforce continuity on the naysayers (and Not Us types)

I... actually have nothing against eleven's screwdriver. It's my favorite, in fact.

While I do love Eleventh's sonic, my main issue is that it doesn't translate too well into toy form.
