Nossans team-up! Mintiyra chasing Nick around? Yay! That would be lovely. |
Dairanger 49. So close to the end, I can taste it.
Shadam's final form is remarkable in how uninteresting it is. I'm really not interested or invested in this final battle at all, I'm just grateful that episode fifty is the final episode. Y'know, if the show had actually planned the Shadam twist, and not just decided to make it up during episode 48 and completely ignore how it makes absolutely no sense at all if you think about it for more than half a second, it could have been a great twist. Seeing the dolls realise what they are, as their bodies collapse around them is really fucked up and not your usual ending for a villain, but still just as satisfying. Kujaku clearly isn't thinking about Daigo in heaven, she was clearly a lesbian all along and now she's in her scissor paradise. |
Abaranger: Episode 10. Yeeep, the big one.
Very infamous for being the "Japanese Power Rangers parody" from Dino Thunder, which apparently pissed off a lot of Sentai fans. I'll give my own opinions when I reach Lost and Found in Translation. Though, all I can really say about this episode is...were they high on acid? This episode is probably the craziest thing I've ever seen in a Sentai, beyond the "Japanese shows are weird" stereotype, even. And I've seen a dinosaur battery that makes a dinosaur mech fart, cross dressing Dekabreak and Magishine, and Shinkenoh slapping Daigoyou on the ass to power him up. I can tell they had a lot of (drug induced) fun with this one, though. |
Liveman 07.
That dinosaur suit man. I know I'm supposed to just kick back and enjoy the ridiculousness of it all, but I want to laugh with the show, not at it. I also find it funny, for all the wrong reasons, that there is no thoughts of the ramifications of moving a dinosaur seventy million years into the future beyond 'he might eat some folk'...err...yeah. Kemp was pretty damn hilarious as well, with his super powered wink that fired hearts out, before finally taking out the Livemen with a rainbow. Man the tone of this show shifted fast. I will say that I do enjoy the mech stuff in this show, surprisingly. It feels like part of the show, more than a going through the motions we have to include this to sell toys, like it does in pretty much every other sentai show but Go-Busters, and maybe early Dairanger at a push. Even if the whole thing in this episode played out like a Godzilla movie that aired about thirty years before this show was made, but whatever. |
Dairanger, the final episode, thank Christ.
Man what a great ending to the series. Sure it was ridiculous as all hell, but it was still really fucking good. I love how the whole 'justice cannot exist without evil' thing was personified by the cast wearing silly costumes and wigs. And I loved watching Shadam just go totally nuts, with a kitchen knife to boot, despite his crazy powers. And then when he turned out to be clay as well! Plus, although dated now, imagery like the Gorma palace falling from the sky were awesome. There were some unintentionally hilarious moments as well, like how the show seems self aware how little characterisation our heroes have, so they have someone shout their motivations out to the audience. I'm pretty sure Master Kaku did this mid way through the show as well. So what is the clay thing about? Does that mean that as long as the Dairanger's exist, they are going to force the Gorma to come back as clay zombies so their battle can continue for eternity? Because considering how close and often the Dairanger's came to losing, and how many people got killed, you can see why the Dragon God wanted the fighting to stop because literally all the Dairanger's need to do is stop and they'd never have to battle the Gorma again. Overall I thought this show was terrible, it's up there with Kuuga for my 'worst toku series ever'. The action was well done enough to make the show entertaining, and to keep me watching and I really enjoyed the music but that is where my praise ends. The Dairangers basically had no characterisation at all, apart from shouting and angry faces which basically makes the show pointless. Why should I watch a fifty episode series if there are no character arcs or character growth? Isn't the point of shows this long to be that we can focus on things with a sense of detail we just couldn't with a movie? Well this show managed to tell me less than your average 90 minute action flick, yeah. Further that, when the Dairangers transformed their entire personality and characterisation (what tiny amounts there were) changed, which is inexcusable when these fights were made specifically for these characters. I was convinced to a point that Daigo and Ryou were the ones in their suits, but entirely unconvinced by the others. What little plot we had was unfocused and made barely any sense. The show never once seemed to work out what it was, as we got wild shifts of focus, huge story developments that were forgotten or completely dropped and times when the show was all out ridiculous, yet played completely straight. Even the action, which I appreciated, wasn't that great. The effects are insanely dated, with most powers being done with the same four or five effects, sometimes not even changed slightly. There were thousands of visible wires and other safety equipment. Although the Dragon Star Lord had a wicked design, the mech stuff in this show was terrible. And yeah, I'm just glad it's over and done with. |
Ever since my recent purchase of Figuarts Ryuranger its Dairanger all the way.

YOu complain about Sentai series that are 90% filler and you get one that is 90% story and you complain. Please never watch KakuRanger as you will hate it. |
So far I'm enjoying Liveman a lot, minus that dinosaur two parter. And I have loved shows like Jetman and what I have seen from Go-Busters but yeah generally sentai isn't my thing, I prefer story and character over action and that is usually what I get from my Kamen Riders.
My thoughts on Kakuranger's opening episode are here. |
Don't worry. Gekiranger is the greatest thing since existence~ :p
