My guess is this will be some kind of Ego/Id Shadow/Persona sort of divide, even if its not explicit.Like they are both the same guy but somehow he gets split into a sorta anti-hero monster-like form and a more heroic rider-like form. Or maybe he gets inhabited by a trickster-ish being who represents a similar anti-hero type of trope, and they separate when he transforms.

Edit: hahaha, i guess i hadnt looked at all the rumours yet, I was basically right with that last part.
