I've had no internet all day, so after spending a lot of time sleeping and working on my garden, I made this mega post of my watching.

G-Gundam 07 - Despite being maybe the most racist episode yet, it had some great character focus and some really enjoyable character focus as well. It's largely an of the week style show, but it doesn't just cocktease at wider things in play, it realises them.

The only real issue I had is why doesn't Domon...just ask Chico? I can understand why he needs to fight, if that is his only way to communicate with the pilots but here he has about ten billion oppurtunities to just take the photo out, ask and leave but just doesn't, causing all manner of chaos and problems because of it. What a shit hero.

Also of course, the Tequila Gundam has a cool design, so it does one pose (not even an
attack, just a pose) and is destroyed. This was quite possibly the worst battle in the entire series so far, I hope to Christ we never get a battle as shit as this ever again.

I feel like I have no investment in this show at all, because Domon is a horrible person and his powers are so hax I have to kind of argue the show with myself and go 'oh yeah well he might have lost there', it's just boring. Maybe it isn't as 'heroic' but I love seeing my heroes struggle, being on the left foot and having to pull out all the stops to win.

There ain't no problem in G-Gundam that can't be solved by the Shining Finger, it seems, which functions more as a weak plot device than an actual attack. Tekka is just as bad, in the opposite direction, making up random rules and drama as it goes along to create completely false tension in all its battles.

Penguim Drum 05 - Man so much crazy shit went down in thi episode, I don't even have anything constructive to add, this show is getting so, so good. I just hope Ringo steps in front of a bus soon, as she is a bane on an otherwise great show.

Tekka 06 - I prefered the relationship between Blade and Dagger when it was done again between Ichigo and Grimmjow. Still though, overall the episode was fine, I just wish it was done with better animation. It's like the further in I get, the more the animation bothers me, or just the worst the animation gets.

Also, why is it Tekkaman Dagger and not Tekkaman Bow? Or Tekkaman Arrow? Or Tekkaman Flint? Or Tekkaman anything to do with his weapon, and not Dagger, which is not what he fights with. Then again I guess Blade only fits in the most tenative of fashions as well...

Oh yeah, I'm once again on a One Piece movement. Spent the last week watching Season 4 and this week I am going to watch the first volume to Season 5.

I will say that the first batch of G-Gundam episodes are mostly formulaic. It doesn't really get going until episode 12.

I'm honestly not sure I can make it that far, after episodes 7 and 8 I feel like I'm ready to give up.

Speaking of episode 8 Fuck me, the opening was dark. Bringing back past Fighters and mixing them with the new ones was well realised and the Lumber Gundam had a rocking design.

Sadly, it's another episode completely ruined by Domon's presence. Rather than letting the epic battle play out, that the whole episode had been building towards and got us invested in, Domon just barged his way in, once again shrugging off all attacks and taking down the enemy by blowing on them. And I like how they just reduced Rain to a pathetic shadow of her true self for false and empty drama. I'm so bored of this show by now.

Tekka 07 - this was actually a really enjoyable episode, it looks like the God awful animation of the last few episodes was because they were saving themselves for this. What an epic episode, Pegasus is so awesome. Although I wonder why they went with Pegasus and not Phoenix or Easter or something more fitting.

Dagger was so shit though.

I finished episode 3 of Sankarea. Man, it just struck me how messed up Rea's life is. It seems that the basic plot has been established, now I'm hoping to see a lot more drama. I love Rea so far.

I watched episodes 264-270 of One Piece today and man, they are really taking their time to get to the gates in Enies Lobby. It feels like they are doing one Manga chapter an episode at this point. I still love the show, but this just shows why series need to take breaks from being on tv inbetween story arcs.

I wonder what measuring stick you hold up against the titles you view. Your standards seem to be pretty high from most of the comments you've posted. This isn't an attack on you but I am curious what you consider a "perfect" anime/cartoon/tv show.

Nothing is perfect. Everything has faults. Saying 'it was good' is a useless post on a discussion board, as such being critical of shows is how I enjoy them, taking them apart from the ground up and rebuilding them. Not just working out what doesn't work, but WHY it doesn't, at least in my opinion. A true fan should be able to write a dissertation on their favourite things faults and love it anyway.

Anyway, I finished Macross. It was really good, I'm not sure if I like it more that Frontier. I think they're about equal.

Fair enough I suppose but some people do come off gauging different types of shows primarily aimed at different audiences with the same measuring stick.

I understand differences in audiences and so on, but the extremely dated animation is a universal problem, as its generic and clichéd story. I loved this show as a kid, but it hasn't aged particularly well. At least in my opinion.

Okay so I finished Evangelion and I gotta say...WTF was up with those last two episodes? They were super philisophical and super confusing. I get that the movies (Death, Rebirth and End of Evangelion) are supposed to "fix" this but still. Episodes 1-24 were great but those last two were just...weird and kind of anti-climatic. I do have a question though: are the Rebuild of Evangelion films worth watching?

Yes. Without a shadow of a doubt.
1.11 is just the first few episodes of the series with a few plot differences (of course it LOOKS a lot better too) but then 2.22 begins to diverge from the series greatly and 3.33 is a completely new beast.

Personally I've found them even better than the series itself, and I was a pretty big fan of that.

Wow, this was DEFINITELY my favourite arc of the show so far. It pretty much had everything, plus I'm an absolute sucker for Monkey's paw stories.

Actually, it was quite funny. Spike Spencer, the voice of Shinji, showed us an out take back in 2006 at my local anime convention of his recording the finale to Evangelion and when the episode ends he just screams, "WHAT THE HELL? THIS IS HOW THIS **** ENDS?! WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT EVEN ABOUT?!"

Yes, hell fucking yes! Watch them now, you must!... Also, if you liked Evangelion then I highly recommend checking out Puella Magi Madoka Magica as well. It is available in both sub and dub, both of which are great so pick whichever one you normally go with. :D

How can you avoid watching the anime a recent purchase originates from? I can't stay away. I started re-watching The Big O, however I need to hold back on this one. Gotta save some of it for an upcoming build.

G-Gundam 09. Was another weak episode, London is depicted how America depicts us in totally serious dramas, the badass English pilot and Gundam came with an unnecessary catch that no other pilot has had and the story continues to lack any sense of logic, even an internal one, which leaves you feeling baffled in every episode and asking all the wrong kinds of questions.

I feel ready to drop this show, honestly.

G Gundam is a show that I think you need to just let take you on the ride as it's not about deep drama in general. I mean, the colonies are just large portions of land they somehow lifted off the Earth and then used the Earth as a dump (although parts of it seem fun). Plus the whole beam boxing ring around the earth.

As I said before the early episodes are a bit slow. Skip to 12 and watch that short arc. If that doesn't give you a feeling that the show is turning around then it's probably just not the sort of thing you will enjoy.

I guess the problem is, I've already seen TTGL. And that is pretty much what I think G-Gundam wanted to be long before TTGL even existed, but G-Gundam isn't TTGL not even close. It's like a poor man's version. I may as well just watch til episode 12 and if I'm not feeling it by then, I'll drop it.

Well if you do then you'll be missing out on the really cool characters like Schwartz Brudder, Neo Germany's totally culturally-accurate Super Ninja.

And that you called G-Gundam "a poor man's TTGL" is quite a statement. Maybe you can't watch older shows? I mean I can't go back and replay older games because I've been babied by newer graphics and controls. Not everything is supposed to be timeless. Its charm is in part due to how old it is and the fact that they decided to do something so radical with the Gundam franchise.

But to each his/her own. I get enough flak for saying EVA was a terrible attempt at a pseudo-Biblical Mecha anime.

At least make it to the Tokyo government building arc before giving up. Even then, G Gundam is hit and miss until they reach Hong Kong.

I hate comparing Super Robot animes to TTGL. TTGL is to Super Robots as Futurama is to Sci-Fi. A genre love letter comedy full of nerdy in-jokes and adult humor. A normal Super Robot anime is nowhere near as crazy over the top as TTGL.


PS For the record, TTGL is still a great show, just like Futurama.

Getter Robo comes pretty close. But yeah for the most part I agree.

Well TTGL is the only other example I have other than say, Giant Robo (which is also far superior to G-Gundam so far) as I haven't watched anime religiously for about seven years now.

Age is nothing to do with my problems with this show, my problems is the show has no logic, not even an internal one, Domon is so hax every fight becomes a chore and most of the mech designs are really boring and a lot of the more interesting designs have gone out in seconds.

So what episode am I meant to watch this until?

Oh I watched the heck out of Getter Robo Armageddon. Was perhaps one of the most bizarre yet entertaining OVAs I've seen. Reason for the disconnect was apparently a lot of the in-show lore was elaborated on a Japanese Radio Show (I mean wow, Japan still has those?).

But as far as Super Robots go, my first love is and has always been Grendizer. Followed by Gordian but my memories of that show are hazy as hell. Might need to look it up.

Gun X Sword. I forgot how much I liked this show when it came out. Carmen 99 is such a hottie.

Episode 12, like someone else suggested. I could've sworn the Shinjuku arc started later than that. That first batch of episodes really does drag to the point that it feels as if the actual story starts much later than it does.

G Gundam goes like this:
1-11: Introduction arc
12-17: Shinjuku arc
18-24: Guyana Highlands arc
25-onwards: Hong Kong Finals, the best part of the show.

The Introduction and Guyana Highlands arc both drag in places. That Introduction might feel like a ton of filler, but a lot of it starts adding up later. The Shinjuku arc is a lot more like a normal Gundam show.

Btw, which Giant Robo? If you mean the OVA "The Day the Earth Stood Still," it has the same director as G Gundam.

Yeah, Shin/Armageddon is not the best place to start in Getter Robo (I know because I started there). It's a majorly screwed up what if sequel made in the time of edgy reimaginings...and it's fucking awesome.

Never been able to bring myself to watch the original though. 70's anime just doesn't agree with me most of the time. I'm opting for New Getter Robo this time around.

New Getter Robo is the only part of the franchise I've seen. It was rather crazy, in a good way of course :D

It and Tekka seem to suffer from basically the same problems, which is extra annoying when you're watching them back to back.

Tekka 08 could have been epic, but it's so bogged down by this point with story beats that are by 2013 so tired that it's hard to care. Still I am glad that the show is starting to ask the same questions as the audience.

Are Figma releasing a Pegas to go with their Tekkaman?

Not likely, the Tekkaman figures came out a while ago and there hasn't been any news of them since. Their release was problematic too for some reason (they were held back for MONTHS) so I'm not sure if Max Factory even want to revisit the show.

I know nothing about Figma, I would have never even known they had been released if I hadn't popped my head in the recent purchases thread. I know how Max Factory feel though, I wish I had left this show in the nostalgia vault and not ruined it for myself with a rewatch. :lol

Main difference is one is a 13 episode OVA and the other is a 49 episode TV anime. OVAs have far less regulations and are short and focused. Every episode counts in most OVAs. TV animes that run for a full year need to pace out it's awesome with filler.
