Nah, Spectacular was well written, had great characterizations and development, it built up several of the villains before fully introducing them, and it pulled nearly all of its material from the Lee/Ditko/Romita era. Obviously Venom being the exception.
I think the problem is that the show was prematurely canceled, so it was never able to truly reach its potential as they had planned the whole show out over the course of 65 episodes (which was going to be Peter's graduation). They were even planning to do direct to video episodes of Peter in college afterwards. Season 3 was going to introduce Hobgoblin, Carnage, have the Tinker get his own episode, and I believe bring in Kingpin. I do agree with Matrix though about the direct to video movies being mediocre. Other than Dr Strange, Hulk vs Wolverine, and the first Avengers one, I can't say I was really blown away with them. |
I'll tell you what though, Spectacular had a great theme song

I'll admit that Ultimate Spiderman is a bit of a guilty pleasure show for me. It's the perfect show to watch if all you need is background noise or to kill 30 minutes. |
I'm slowly making my way through Ultimate. I actually dug the first season but then the show just kept going and repeating the same tropes over and over again. Last episode I watched was the Spider-Verse 4 parter.
Oh, I really loved Ultimate's theme music for Green Goblin. The chorus was terrific. |

Spectacular is great if only for giving us Josh Keatons' Spider-Memes.
