I spent this weekend building the Real Grade Destiny Gundam I bought at Barnes & Nobles:

I had to put most of the decals on because I wanted to challenge myself, and I like the way it looks. I've built dozens of Gunpla, but this is my first in 4 years. It's a fantastic kit, but there is some nasty spru marks on the blue and gray parts, some fit issues and the foil decals do not stick.

I couldn't get the backpack to fit in my small light box, but I should have a picture of it on the display shelf soon if anyone is interested.

I came across some old Gundam models I have that I don't want anymore. What do people usually do with them? Toss 'em? Is there any after market for assembled sets to be used for customs or spare parts?

I've got a 1/60 Strike Freedom Lightning Edition (dunno if all the lights still work), 1/100 no grade Infinite Justice & Strike Freedom, and a 1/100(?) no grade Heavy Arms Custom from Endless Waltz. All assembled with no paint, no panel lining, or other stuff on them.

Haven't seen any Gunpla at my Barnes and Noble. I know not everyone of them is getting it but it sucks that mine probably won't have it.

It's not a very large selection, but it's nice to be able to buy them in person.

So, the second on the left is a HGBF Crossbone Maoh modification I'm guessing, but what're the other 3?

the two on top are resin/primed prototypes of the one underneath it, that one being God Gundam. The Black suit next to it is the Master Gundam. Both hail from G-Gundam. A wonderful series most notable for being as far removed from the OYW as possible. The animation is a bit dated but filled with super-robot martial-arts splendiferousness.

I assume you're asking about the 1/144 scale versions, they come with the necessary parts to build either the stock MS or the GNHW armed versions.

I have the RX-78-2 from the first wave. It's awesome.

Dumb question, but what does Real Grade do different then high grade? Is it more detailed and poseable?

RGs are built around an inner frame. This apparently increases poseability, but I can't say for sure as I've never built one. Some of their armor also shifts when they move, and they come with a ton of little decal markings for if you want to make them super realistic.

I have a few: RX78, Zaku 2, Aile Strike, and Freedom Gundam and an unbuilt Destiny.

They're as poseable and detailed as a Master Grade but they're also kinda fiddly. For example: RX78 has pieces coming off of the frame, Aile Strike's hands are a pain in the ass.

Even with they're problems though, they're as close as Figuarts for Model Kits and pretty impressive over all. Definitely some of my favrioute Gundam-related things Bandai is putting out.

The details are definitely increased, often featuring different hued panels and fine sculpted details. They also use the line as a showcase for their engineering prowess. Each kit features a full, or as close to full inner frame with integrated joints pre-assembled on the sprue. As was mentioned, some of the kits are fragile or fiddly due to the necessity of their designs. The RX-78-2 in particular suffers from this.


They're really interesting builds. The engineering decisions and design flairs keep me coming back. I need to pick up an AEUG mk II. I have the old hguc titans version, but never managed to pick up the latter.

The old HG MKII had a similar frame system, but more fiddly. For it's time it was cool though, kind of wish I never sold mine...

I don't suppose anybody has the 1/100 Virtue unassembled they'd sell me for a good price. It's $55 on Amazon, I'd like to spend a bit less than that.

I must just be missing the point here. Apparently Bandai is about to announce a new 1/100 Gundam line at the upcoming Shizuoka Hobby Show. But why?

We already get MG 1/100's, we get non-grade 1/100's for shows from time to time. Why bother with a new line at the scale? I've seen people say they think they'd be like 1/100 RG's which makes no damn sense to me since RG's are essentially just hyper realistic Master Grades at a 1/144 scale. So, da fuq?

Money grabs, pure money grabs. The two things that work best in my head are either a line of 1/100 scale RG or a 1/100 scale line along the lines of HGUC, hitting that ¥2500 sweet spot. I doubt that a line of 1/100 scale RG kits would make sense, especially given that MG kits already scratch that itch.
