This. It's disappointing that even when Wizard lowers itself to spelling everything out for the audience, they still miss the point anyway.

I strongly believe that part of Haruto's negative perception is that a lot of people who came into the franchise with W, OOO, or Fourze expect that all main Riders should be over-the-top and goofy, while all the secondary Riders are more stoic and serious. Wizard flips that dichotomy and the show is basically like Fourze if Meteor was the main Rider. The main guy is the serious badass, the support Rider is the flailing goofball. I can see how that might throw people that are used to it the other way around.

I'm sure that's the intent, but when the actor is as bland as white bread with butter on it, it absolutely doesn't work.

I'm not doubting Haruto is intended to be a reserved character, since there's things going on that would support that, but the actor is tre-fucking awful, and has zero personality. He's flat as a board, and barely manages to summon base everyday emotions in his voice. It takes a certain talent to play subdued without coing across as emotionally oblivious, and sadly he's utterely vacant in his performance, and that's what will always stop Haruto from being a good character sadly, the acting.

He can't even say his dumb catchphrase without sounding like it's his first take on a morning where he slept in.

Yeah I think that is the case as well, even though Wizard's tone isn't that different, having the story emoted through such a stoic character changes everything. And if there is one thing people hate, it's change. But calling him bad, just because it is something out of your comfort zone is just wrong. And annoying.
