Meanwhile, I stick to watching the raws via stream and then the subbed version for the current series (while Toqger and Kyoryuger were pretty easy to understand, Gaim is kinda difficult, because most of the dialogue goes further than what the episode shows you), and remain with subs for the older stuff. Watching in both directions sounds kinda cool, but you'll be out of old stuff in no time, because it takes a while to find the older stuff and not all of the old series have been subbed- but then again, there are also huge gaps in the continuity of newer series as well. Personally, I can mostly suggest newer stuff (haven't seen that many old seasons). If you like something light-hearted, Goseiger and Kyoryuger are for you. Feel like some heavier atmosphere? Then go with Shinkenger and Magiranger. If you want something inbetween those two types, Gekiranger or Gaoranger are a good choice. |

... That show must change A LOT from the first 13 episodes. :lol |
I wouldn't say it's "heavy" all the time but it does lend itself to some dramatic moments later on in its run. Magiranger really goes on to become a very strong show.

I find that direct downloads are better for older things. A new release will often have so many seeds going that you can get the episode in a couple of minutes. It only took me like seven minutes to complete the first episode of ToQger. |

I'm sort of in the same boat, so i'm gonna post here instead of starting a new topic. I just finished Zyuranger a few days ago, and haven't been too sure where to go next.
I watched the first episodes of Goranger and ToQger, and the first two of Dairanger. I really enjoyed Goranger, but the first episode was the only one I could find subbed. Even if I could find more, though, there are only 6 or so episodes subbed, right? ToQger I didn't really enjoy that much. The action was good, but it was too cheesy. Maybe down the road I could enjoy it more, but it's not what I was looking for either. I tried watching Battle Fever J, but couldn't find ANY subbed episodes. Finally, I settled on Dairanger, and I didn't enjoy it at all. Everything felt like a step down from Zyuranger in the first two episodes. Almost nothing was explained, it all just sort of happened. It really bothered me how the first episode had transformations, powers, and mech battles, without any sort of explanation. The first episode of Zyuranger sets up the enemy and the main characters, while the second episode sets up the mechs. A couple episodes later, they set up DaiZyuJin. It felt very natural, while the setup in Dairanger felt somewhat forced. The opening wasn't nearly as catchy, either. The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth, and made me somewhat consider leaving my sentai viewing at Zyuranger. However, it seemed like a lot of the things I didn't like about it were simply that they weren't zyuranger, so maybe if I give it another shot down the line, i'll change my mind. Where should I go from here? I considered watching Gokaiger, because I thought it looked cool (I watched a few clips and enjoyed them) but was worried that I wouldn't get the full effect (of both Gokaiger, and the previous shows when finally getting around to them). I thought about maybe watching Kakuranger as well. I have a few MMPR toys of Kakuranger stuff from when I was a kid, so i'd still have a nostalgic connection to the series like I did Zyuranger, but to a lesser extent. It also had a much better opening theme than dairanger, which is a plus. (I know opening theme seems like a silly theme to list as a deciding factor, but every time I heard the zyuranger opening, it put me in a good mood and made me excited to watch the episode). I'm also interested in other shows, such as Kamen Rider, but don't know where to start. Sorry for the long-winded, disorganized post |
The lack of connection between the Rangers and their unmorphed counterparts is a problem through the whole of Dairanger, it's probably the only sentai show which handles characters worse than Kyoryuger.
If you want just general recommendations my person favourite modern sentai is Goseiger - it's a show with epic action, and really good character focus for a sentai show. And my personal favourite classic sentai is Liveman, largely because it's so ambitious it feels years ahead of its time, even if it doesn't always work as well as you'd like. |
