*Insert obligatory Super Megaforce hate here*

Decent enough to make one think that only a Ranger can write for a Ranger
It's not the terrible. I mean the whole training thing does make sense. In translating Goseiger and Gokaiger and transplanting the two into each other to make it a unified whole, there will be contradictions and details one will need to sort out. Having Noah train with swords, someone we know can use a bow, is actually fitting in with the idea that he isn't that used to the transition yet. For the record, Noah didn't make as big a deal with the shirt cut as much as Emma did. She may have thought it was worse that it actually was. Most people who would see someone do anything remotely like this and then see one cut too close and bring them down would naturally assume the worst. Another concern I have is how the episode will work during the battle. Remember, in the Gokaiger original, Blue used various Blue Ranger keys for the Five Saber finish. One of those keys was GoseiBlue, which wouldn't translate well here. Seeing as how they already replaced one Goseiger/Megaforce change with a Boukenger/Overdrive shift, then one might think a change would be waranted here as well. Eh, food for thought.

I'm torn. One one hand, I like that they're changing Noah's character a bit to match the badass swordsman that is Gokai Blue in the sentai footage. But this isn't a nerdy, weak character suddenly becoming an accomplished fighter - yes, they've had one season under their belts as Rangers but they never acknowledged Noah was improving. There was that one episode where Noah gained confidence, and then he stopped developing like any character not getting a focus episode.
I kind of hate that this is, like Samurai, a translation of the sentai script. I do appreciate they're injecting Noah's reasoning into being a loner this time around - "if I get better, the team gets better." That actually makes sense, and I like they didn't just suddenly plant Joe's lone wolf personality onto Noah. This scene is not entirely consistent with the characters, but it's still somehow entertaining. |
I don't care if the writing is somewhat similar to Gokaiger. But damn! The acting feels like I'm watching Samurai all over again!

It looks ok. Going to watch episode.

Noah sure has come a long way. In Megaforce he was training against hanging water bottles under the watchful eye of Troy. Now he's up to training alone with a contraption that flings knives at him while Troy stands on the beach pining away for Robot Knight.
Also, I don't understand how you can show someone training by have knives flung at them, but you can't show the repercussions of having said knives flung at you. |
Can't wait for kids to try this thinking the worst that could happen is a torn sleeve!

I think, if they didn't want to show a real cut, they should've just had Noah screw up his timing and fall over dodging a knife. Then, he could have just pointed out if that was against the monster he'd be finished and the scene could go on in exactly the same way. The scene worked in Gokaiger because they could actually show a cut, if they wanna pull it across and make it not silly, there should've been some compromise.
But really that's the problem with Super Megaforce; every preview we've ever had has been followed with discussions about what's wrong with it. It'd be nice if Super Megaforce could do one scene that didn't have glaring issues. Just one. |
Honestly? People like to pick holes in things. That's not a new phenomenon, in fact its probably as old as time. Doctor Who fans have always picked the hell out of their favourite show. Every new doctor gets a resounding cry of ewww I hate him, before everyone does a 180 and can't bare to see him leave. It's much the same with Sentai suits designs.
Case in point, me and Battlizer and Locke rag on this show's behind-the-scene morality issues all the damn time, but at least 2 out of the 3 of us have admitted to enjoying it at a base level. I'll say it again, having Noah be seen training is orders of magnitude better than him randomly having the skills when the Gokaiger footage turns up. That's not to say there's nothing wrong with the character and how he's handled, just... try seeing the wood for the trees... training for a few seconds on screen often equals a couple of days in tv land. That's not a new thing either. |
Plus the best thing a show could hope for is its audience, is that it's critical. Being critical of something shows an active response to the material and that you have enough investment in it to be critical of it.
The worst thing a show could ever hope from its audience is 'it was okay'. |
