Chousha Reideen. This came out around when Dagwon was out and they basically added a dash of super sentai to the Super Robot show Reideen(But the mecha was not the main focus and the protagonists who transformed were called Reideens). There were the 5 protagonist Reideens and then the other 5 who were rivals/antagonists. The also tried cashing in on more female fans by making them a Pop boy band while the rivals were a rock band.

The characters were drawn by Hirai Hisashi, the character designer for Ryvius, SCRYED, Gundam SEED series, etc. The protagonist has hints of the Momotaro legend as hinted by his anthropomorphic partners who are a canine, a simian, and an avian.

I remember watching an episode of this anime and thinking "hmmm...this reminds me of Gavan/Shaider/Sharivan metal heroes". And a few days ago, the anime popped in my head and I couldn't remember the name to save my life. I didn't know anyone else knew about it!
