I guess I do like the colors. It reminds me of the 90's during my childhood. It would cool if our main hero is a retro Otaku that becomes a Kamen Rider. Having Toshiki Inoue as a writer would be cool. It can give me hope that the show will be good.

Looking through this thread really highlights why I tend to only stay in the Figuarts threads around here nowadays. This has been the same song and dance every year for a while now. Tons of complaining and whining about how "the old Kamen Rider was better" and how "Kamen Rider's gone to shit" and so on and so forth.

I get these are mostly opinions, but they tend to be worded in such a toxic manner sometimes that you can't help but get aggravated at it. And if that's what some users are hoping to cause, then that's nothing but sad.

Is it okay to be apprehensive about or just not like the suits? Yes. That's down to opinion and taste, which is all different. But can ANYONE say this show is terrible based literally on the suits and what we know of the gimmick? No. Because we've seen nothing put into practice at all yet. People need to stop seeing changes to the Kamen Rider franchise and formula as ruining anything and more like possibility. This is so different from what we've ever gotten so far that I can't help but be interested in all of it. I love the concept. I love the suit themes, I love the extremely eccentric and unique suit designs that practically stray from your typical Rider designs in ways that haven't been seen since probably Hibiki at best. I'm going in optimistic, not dreading every single thing. I honestly believe more people need to do that here.

And at the end of the day...it's a kid's show. This is no different from stuff like Transformers or TMNT or anything. If you're fond of the franchise, one series or series aspect you don't particularly like should be the bomb that detonates your entire interest in everything.

I love everything I see. Amazing concept, wacky designs, it all just seems to work so perfectly.

I think it's less a rumor and more that whatever it would've been, it became a Rider series so early in production it doesn't matter. Certainly the suit wouldn't have been designed yet, and if they wanted to change it to be more traditional, they could've well before the suit was made, so it was all very deliberate.

I have an easier time accepting Hibiki as a Rider though, for some reason. I actually like these designs just fine, but I can't help but feel just a couple tweaks would make them fit in better with Kamen Rider. Replacing the SD Gundam eyes with normal, compound bug eyes would do wonders for them, even if it sacrifices a bit of the really unique identity they have.

But then again, when you look like an explosion at the Crayola factory, how much more identity do you really need?

And now for the really important part- the story!

*Our hero's real name is "Emu" (likely pronounced "M")- a brilliant computer genius who creates a new series of artificial lifeforms named the "Bugsters," all of whom regard Emu as their father. But when the Bugsters go out of control, Emu creates the GamerDriver & Gashats in order to stop them.

So, a bit of GoBusters mixed with a bit of Gridman...

The primary Rider is a brilliant genius? And he is the actual creator of the henshin tech? And he's actually responsible for creating the bad guys?

This is all amazing! I have never been more sold on a series' early press materials.

Why is everything so unbelievably garish? Why does everything reek of 90's nostalgia? I don't know what to think right now, but I'm pretty sure I don't like it. That Driver is WAY too brightly colored.

I hope the plot summary is more accurate than Ghost's was (wheres my damn globetrotting spook rider gdi) because I like the sound of the main Rider creating the monsters and they seeing him as a father of sorts very much.

Man, I don't think I have been this hyped in a while.
The fact that I have to wait till October breaks me heart.

I mean, at least all of it pretty much makes sense. There really isn't anything here where I'm going "now how the hell does that fit in with the theme?" like last year's Iguana Ghostriker.

The more I look at it, the places where I'm shaking my head are the hair (Still can't dig it) and the size of the driver, which makes Fourze's driver look reserved in comparison...

It helps that "Video Games" is a pretty all-encompassing concept compared to something like "Ghosts" or "Cars". You can reasonably justify pretty much anything when your theme is an entire artistic medium.

Maybe iguanas have some kind of association with death? Obviously ghost ships are a thing and Captain Ghost is a ship that belongs to Ghost, so that part at least makes some sense.

They've had some really weird, esoteric inspiration for stuff before, so it wouldn't surprise me.

It's got a very Fourze Driver look to it in general. The slots, right hand lever, and hologram projection of Ex-Aid's suit in the center don't help. I personally think the design is okay; the colors are what kills it for me.

I can get past the colors, it just has too much going on. It has a toaster on the left side, a huge ass display in the middle, a lever that seems too large for it's own good...It just really seems like it's twice as large as it actually needs to be.

Because Ghost has historical theme as one of main motif, maybe Iguana Ghost Striker homage to Galapagos Iguana because Galapagos Island visited by Charles Darwin.

Anyway....really interesting about Emu as genius character. Hmmm.....the virus thing is really similar to Messiah from Go-Busters.

I imagine there's some lightshow effects going on inside there that require the space. Mirrors and whatnot to project through/from the Gashacons and into the central display. That's my guess.

Do those guys feel anime-like? Cause the chibis feel like an anime versions of themselves. Maybe the level 1s will be CGI and later in level 2 their live selves.

I certainly hope not, but Ex-Aid's Level 1 looks like a suit to me. I do wonder what the point of Level 1 even is though. Like, why bother inventing a Driver that turns you into something like THAT just when it's then going to turn you into a proper superhero a moment later? For what purpose?

That's a very good question and i really hope all these disparate crazy ideas come together into something good.

I'm more excited than worried, but a lot about the series so far seems like it'd be easy to make a crappy show out of.

I think the first trailer or two will have to air before I even have any clue what to expect. Right now, going by that summary and the designs I'm expecting something stylistically and tonally like Fourze, which could be good, because I love Fourze, but that love has to do a lot with things that weren't apparent until the show started airing, so I don't know.

Assuming that summary is even accurate? None of that info is in the pictures here, and it wouldn't be since it's just a toy catalog, so I'm curious where that's coming from.

Unfortunately, until we get to the series, the answer will be "Because that's what they did with the retail action figure line." I guess a similar argument could've been made for Kamen Rider Kabuto or Den-O. I suspect the connective tissue will be an associated video game that affects an 8- or 16-bit style.

I hope you're wrong and that the chibi suits are CGI, largely because I'd prefer that the suit budget go more unique Riders and enemies. (I don't necessarily think you're wrong; that looks like a physical object to me, too.)

A few people have mentioned that the helmet doesn't look (enough) like a Rider helmet. One of the things I love most about seeing a new Rider design is imagining the process and intention that went into it.

The Heisei Kamen Rider suits - mostly the helmets - seem to always contain some reference to the original Kamen Rider. The most frequently-riffed elements seem to be the eyes, antennae, jewel, and mandible-faceplate. In the designs with bug eyes, it's easiest to see the lineage, but sometimes, they get creative. Gaim re-imagined the compound eyes as the meat of an orange. There was an obvious jewel and reference to the mandible. I'd also argue that the blade on the helmet is a riff on antennae. Drive took the same idea of eyes, but this time, saw them as a headlight, and imagined the mandibles as a car's interior. Wizard crossed the jewel with the compound eyes. The helmets aren't the only points of reference: W riffed on the scarf, and Drive had the piping on the arms and legs.

I'd also argue that Hibiki deliberately contains elements, specifically re-imagining the antennae as horns and the jewel as the oni face, but the design went so far afield, people still tend to suspect it wasn't originally a Kamen Rider show. (As I understand it, that got debunked.)

Ex-Aid's got the jewel, and I can't decide whether the molded hair is supposed to be a re-imagining of the antenna. It's SUCH a stretch, I find it just as likely that visor is an antennae reference, or that they didn't do an antennae reference at all in this iteration. As clear as most of these scans are, I still can't quite make out whether there's a compound-eye texture to the orange part of the eyes. Maybe the green on the jaw is a mandible reference?

All of it is arguable, of course, much like the number thing. After all, I'm just guessing at the intentions of the designers. I do find it interesting that Ex-Aid's Gekitotsu Robots level-up adds something clearly more antenna-like.

Am I squinting too hard? Anything I've missed?

I am not digging these suit designs but I'll gladly take anything after Ghost(Kinda funny Ghost's designs were one of it's saving graces especially with Mugen EASILLY being the best final form in the franchise IMO)

As far as cliche goes, I think pretty much every Kamen Rider series is conceptually cliched -- it's the execution of the cliches that makes each series special. I've never seen Kamen Rider do this configuration (main rider responsible for the baddies, also for creating the Rider tech himself), which is about as fresh as you can hope for from a 45 year old franchise, IMO...

I think people are thinking it sounds like "emulation", but I'm not sure. As for it being the letter M... maybe he's Captain M, The Game Master? No? Okay...

And that's a nicely realistic viewpoint. People like to complain about things being unoriginal, but with as many shows and movies and books and crap exist already, I don't think it's very fair to hope for much more than something to be a unique cocktail of existing ingredients. If it's new to Kamen Rider, that's good enough.

I'll try giving this a shot amidst the schoolwork put upon me. For the suits, pretty nice. I find them cute, actually.
