Cool. I'm not familiar with SODO figures, are these candy toys and are those stickers?!

Btw, and take it with a grain of salt, but HLJ have the Gorillamond FB set up for "Oct. Restock". It's worth a shot.

Yes, they're candy toys, and most of the color there is likely to be stickers.

Apparently, these types of candy toys have gotten very good (recently?) I had no interest, then picked up a couple of waves of the Ex-Aid SODO, and good grief, they're good!

A surprising number of color details are either molded or painted. There's still substantial use of stickers. So far, the Ex-Aid SODO line has been superior to LVUR, and it's looking like the Build line will follow suit, providing articulation that the retail figures will lack. The Ex-Aid figures look drastically better in their Level 1 and 3 forms than LVUR did.

They're not perfect and certainly not Figuarts quality, but I've been surprised by how happy I've been with Ex-Aid SODO, and I don't even own a lot of the early releases. That line also went DEEP into the cast in a way the LVUR line didn't: both Chronos forms, Ride Players, Poppy, Bugsters, Graphite, late-series Lazer, etc.

I'm not quite sure what's painted and what's a sticker on this figure. The details on the TranSteam Gun, the bat visor, the jaw details, and the near-armpit details are definitely stickers. Several other details I'd expect to be stickers (the green and red tubes on the torso, the wrists, and the forearm fins) don't really look like it. The stripes on the horn are likely stickers. Even the bat on the chest, which I'd expect to be a sticker, looks a lot like it's painted.

I'm guessing since we're getting NightRogue, BloodStark can't be far behind, although probably not this wave, since the blog seems to reference cost of a single-box-complete figure like this as something an obstacle.

I've dealt with these toys long enough that I can tell by looking close enough what is and isn't a sticker.

The only one I'm not 100% sure about are the tubes on the forearms. They look flat like stickers to me so I'm going with that. They do tend to have a suitable sculpt under most stickers, so customizing is great most of the time. Worth noting that if they leave out a detail, it's normally patterns (like the eyes) or a part they plan to reuse on other characters.

Some notes from the blog: Night Rogue is like the Ride Player. Self contained to one box...sort of. Night Rogue does not come with a stand (just a sticker in case you have a spare stand) and the sword is with another figure not yet revealed.

Almost certainly BloodStark, since the sword part is his part of their combined bayonet weapon. Whether he'll come with both parts is uncertain, though, since that's likely to be another single-box figure, and it doesn't look like NightRogue's half is build to combine.

Also, thanks for your sticker thoughts! I wasn't sure about the tubes on the abs until I noticed what looked like a popped-up sticker on one of the photos. I'll be curious to see, in a couple of months, just how close you were. It surprises me just how much paint there seems to be given that there's already a materials-cost issue with this one.

Not sure if anyone has said but the difference in the DX and Gashapon Full Bottles are the caps are separate and theres no piston piece inside
So all in all for ones like Hedgehog and Lion that come outside of the dx sets, gashapons seem a good alternative if like me you dont the buildphone etc

@Tokumonkey: Thank you for the clarification. Those do look pretty cool, considering the price point. I looked at some of the E-A ones, too, I like em.

Looking at the Build ones, it seems to me like they may be superior to the gimmick figures in some ways. Looks like the entire neck and most of the head is attached to the right side of the body and all you change is the left head piece. Same with the waist! This would provide two crucial points of articulation, as you mentioned with other releases. I may cancel my preorders for the first 3 BRs. They really don't look as fun as I thought, judging by the reviews Blade Fang posted.

Speaking of which, so candy Fullbottles are pretty much identical to DX? This brings back memories of Fourze switches. There were so many of the damn things half of them never got a DX release. Going by the belt hack, I'm assuming there's going to be a lot of FBs. I don't really like dealing gimmicks that span multiple lines. I'm hoping this isn't the case with Build.

Also, for those that might be unsure, I made a sticker/paint guide for Build in TankRabbit and GatlingHawk in the same way as Night Rogue. Build is a lot more obvious with placement.

Short answer: budget. It's not cost effective to add a second plastic color for an accessory.

Ok, I didn't see it initially, but if all that are stickers, then I can see why the gimmick figures are still viable. Still, if they can design the SODO to have neck/waist articulation then I see no reason to change the design for the BCs. I wonder if SODO, like the BCs if every right half is compatible with all the lefts as well?

I would assume it has to do with the age groups they can market to. Sodos being model kits and having tiny choking hazard parts that allow for more articulation limit the amount of children they can potentially sell to. If the BCR figures had a bunch of tiny removable parts like the sodos then they probably wouldn't sell as many.

They aren't model kits, they just have stickers.

Why these lines have different articulation is pretty simple: Bandai's departments are divided by type of toy rather than franchise. The people working in Bandai Shokugan (candy toy) department have nothing to do with the department BCR is in (I think it's just general Bandai). One department saw a way to design it with a neck joint, the other did not. Simple as that.

I still stand by my guess. Simpler toy with no small removable parts will give them a wider audience for their product and bring in more money.

Are you asserting that a lack of competence on the part of the BCR design team is at fault? Or are you saying both teams have different restrictions and goals? If you're saying the latter then I think we're saying the same thing.

PS One new detail shown here is that the driver is removable like Ex-Aid's driver. In theory, you could buy a bunch and paint up every bottle for every form.

Damn, sorry for the double post.

The weapons in build's line have been disappointing for me so far but the ninpo gatana has hit a new low. This looks more like a sentai weapon than something from rider and I'm not talking about it's theme or how it's bright, colorful or otherwise "childish" looking.

It's a hunk of plastic with one button, a few sounds to cycle, no lights, zero moving parts and no interaction with the henshin gimmick. It's just not something I expect from rider. I hope this sentaiesque simplicity was a one-off deal and it sells poorly so it never happens again.

Edit: I'd like to add that kyuranger is not included in this rant, those toys are amazingly fun :p

I love the sword. I think it's clever. As far as functionality (or lack of) it's no different than the Daidaidmaru. Not every weapon has to be compatible with gimmicks to be relevant. My main issue is how long will any of these form change weapons (or forms themselves for that matter) stick around for to justify their own weapons, as toys? Meanwhile the main weapon is terrible, IMO.

I don't believe weapons need to be compatible with the gimmicks to be good but I do believe they need something more than a button and an on/off switch. The daidaimaru could connect to the mussou saber which activated a connecting sound and had lights. Those three tiny things may sound insignificant but I feel like they go a long way in providing a tactile, auditory and visual satisfaction when playing with the toy.

I'd love it if you could go more in depth with why you like the sword so much. Our first impressions are so drastically different from each other's lol.

Agreed, that extra bit of functionality on the ddm does add a lot to the play value. Not to mention there's kinda, for lack of a better term, a mini "game" (you know what I'm referring to) in there, too. Also, it's an orange slice sword!

I think my main draw to this one is the purple/yellow color combo, it's also my favorite Build form at the moment, so that's influencing me, I'm sure. It's also pretty damn clever integrating manga panels into a sword as is the upcoming bow that combines a boat anchor with a train. Now that I hear it has scribbling sounds, I'm liking it even more. It's just so random it's cool, I guess. I should probably wait to see it in action before I gush over too much, though. lol

I feel the same way about it visually. The look of it is super fun and I absolutely love how the tip of the sword is a nib.

I was thinking all day yesterday how I would change it so that I enjoyed it more. I would turn the nib and all the individual panels into buttons. The panels would activate the ninjitsu and finisher standby sounds and the nib would activate the scribbling sound, explosions and sound effects for the ninjitsu. The trigger would only activate slashing sounds.

I could imagine Build, in the show, stabbing the ground or enemies with the sword and "ink" flowing from the nib to do various things. I think adding that little bit of physical action to the sword would make it way more fun for kids and collectors and bring it back to feeling more like a rider weapon for me.

It's actually in stock at HJL, but sadly I'm passing. I even cancelled my driver and BC figure preorders. I was going to go all in with Build stuff, but since coming off my 3 year KR haiutus, I rewatched Gaim (again) and decided I wanted to put my funds into completing my Lockseeds instead. My collection is all over the place. I have 30 switches, 4 trains, 9 hibiki discs, 6 candroids, ect ect. I want to finally complete something, ya know?

I totally get you. I thought about not collecting ex aid because I'm so close to completing ghost. I fell in love with the show and the toys for ex aid so that went out the window real quick lol. I'll probably end up only buying the full bottle sets for build so maybe I'll go back to ghost.

Ugh. I loved being able to preorder the first SODO Build set, and I'm bummed that even though boxes have been solicited for the next four waves, neither HLJ nor AmiAmi have offered set preorders.

And it looks like the Bandai Candy blog was updated, so wave two is Night Rogue, HawkGatling, NinninComic, and RocketPanda. I wasn't expecting the third just yet!
