Well with it being CG, it could lead to better choreography since Mo-Cap has been used on Zen
|
Well, uh, hm. That's certainly true, but now it's not great to look at for completely different reasons!

Personally I'd love to see a sentai that sticks exclusively to just the in-suit fights no mechs or big gimmick, but I could see toei thinking that would make Rider and Sentai a lot harder to tell apart, even if they kept the tones pretty different, so I don't know if we'll ever actually see that happen |
Toei must be pretty darn confident in their CGI if these claims prove true (which is all but confirmed at this point).
If Zenkaiger can have mechs for the team members, DonBrothers is going to have no mechs and CGI animals. I'm actually really curious how they're all going to look, certainly will be another interesting team shot, much like Zenkaiger. Black is the new White! We're getting not only a Kamen Rider Black reboot, but two black rangers in one season? It feels a little weird, but since Zenkaiser isn't a permanent member for DonBrothers, it'll be like Ultraman Geed Galaxy Rising in Z, which might be interesting. So I'm guessing the Sentai Gears are going to stick around until maybe the 50th Anniversary of Sentai (assuming Toei doesn't assimilate Sentai and Rider, if people are concerned over Sentai's future). It's going to be an interesting early Reiwa era for Toku it seems. |
What do you mean two black rangers? I thought it was one?
|
InuBrother is DonBrother's black ranger who is apparently described as a CGI dog. Then there's the claim of "Zenkaiser Black," which I assume is a palette swap of Zenkaiser. I know that last one isn't going to stay throughout the whole season, I just find it odd they'd use the same color for two rangers, and/or the fact that Zenkaiser has a palette swap in the first place.

let's take a grain of salt with those rumors.

Tbh I'm a bit mixed on these rumours, there's a few that have been stated so much that I've started to take them qt face value (cgi, and the rangers themes), but some of the specifics are just so weird that even if they turn out to be totally true I think I need to see it announced first to fully beleive it |
I'm in the same boat, in which I never read too much into rumors and leaks until something concrete lands. Especially when there are bold claims like I'm seeing here, I just never liked reading too much into some of these speculations.

Sure, modern seasons are better at integrating the mech battles into the story -- we're well past the days of the 70s-90s, when they were just excuses to overuse stock footage and pad out the runtime of the episode -- but they're never my favorite part. I'm interested to see how the creative team approaches these new digital-world battles, but I'm not particularly hopeful that they'll break the mold in a significant structural way. Something I loved about The High School Heroes -- a fucking fantastic series that far too few people are talking about -- is the lack of giant mech fights. I think HSH can be used as a proof-of-concept for how a mech-less Sentai series could work... and, if the Sentai heroes continue to look like mechs in their ground-level forms, I don't see the lack of traditional, giant-sized mechs in the series impacting the toylines that rely on mechs for sales. Also Inubrother is going to be very short.
|
I'm not so big on mecha fights, except anniversary stuff where they bring out old mecha are cool and I like some of the 70s-90s ones for the old effects and early computer graphics, plus they can be shorter which is nice! Maybe the introduction of a giant robot did seem more groundbreaking in 1979 than now though.
|
It's not saying there's no mech battles, it's just saying they will be different.
|
I pretty sure giant robots are still used in DonBrother series.
I think the Super Sentai giant robots as merchandise is the most popular Super Sentai toy. I am fine with CGI Giant Robots especially if the fighting style is epic just like Good Cool Kaiser VSX |

While I don't know personally which sentai toys sell the best, I often hear people talk about how sentai mech in Japan are not as popular as they once were, largely due to there being cheaper but more complex robot toys on the market (specifically shinkalion has been doing really well as sentai toy sales overall have plummeted) I don't really have first hand experience of thus but I remember Taka from kotetsu toys has a video where he talked about it (I think it's one of the ones about sentai making less money each year), and I've heard other people from Japan mirror the same sentiments, basically "kids who watch toku don't want a sentai mech as their one big gift for the year, they want a rider belt or an ultra changer", it seems to be a common sentiment Personally I think removing mech but replacing it with cgi fights makes some sense if they want to make really big changes but also don't want sentai and rider to get confused for each other I'm no authority tho, so like I said it's all hearsay until the press release |
It's essentially replacing the large robots with small robots, right?

tho I was sort of unclear on if the CGI rangers look mechanical in any way when in their "other dimension" fights or whatever they were called? Maybe the last set of rumours/leaks touched on that and I forgot It seems like Rider action figures sell well, so maybe they're trying to create more of a figurine market for sentai and see how that does? Zenkaiger already felt a bit like that with the mechs being characters and all EDIT: this is the part of was forgetting about "The Legendary Avataro Gear Alters can summon mecha and allow the team to combine with those mecha" |

Also Don ZenkaiOh? Is the DX Zenkai Juran from this year combining with a new half? Because that would be awesome. |
Happy to see ToQger!

My question now is will Oni Sister be Natsuki/Bouken Yellow 2.0 and can we expect a Urashima Taro-themed tsuika senshi ranger who wears green and has a gold turtle shell on the back of the suit and has a pizza-themed smartphone for a transformation device. :lolol
|
Zyuohger getting more love? Oh hell yeah, I'm down!
|
when are we getting pictures(oh and mecha if we have them)
|
Quote:
We may get images of Don Momotaro sooner, perhaps around the 18th if the past few years are any indication, but we can't count on that. TBH, it's not unreasonable to expect that an image could leak any time between today and the 24th. |
|
I... I don't hate this. At all. But I'm getting more cat vibes from Black than dog?
|
I had my doubts, but this looks awesome. The video game vibes, the animal companions. My big concern is how they are going to integrate with Zenkaiger as a rare on-going second-season of sorts for Sentai.

I love Tokusatsu because it's real suits, not cheap computer animations. We have enough of those nowadays as is. |
Quote:
Dogs tend to be not black and more fluffy/round while cats are sharp/angular. It will be interesting how they use Pink/Black. Sentai clearly is trying to experiment more. Quote:

love the suit designs! looking forward to this
|
Well at least the helmets look a bit more conventional, although unusual in itself for the anniversary show to be quite experimental. Nice visor shapes!

I'm fine with them trying out new things like some members being CG. We got Kyuranger trying out some members being fully-suited characters. LuPat tried Sentai v Sentai. Zenkaiger made the whole team minus the leader suited characters. If they wanna try some members being portrayed in CG, then let them I'd say. It's not like it's the full series going that route. Plus Sentai's been using CG for certain parts of its production for a couple of years now. |

If they wanted to make a fully animated Sentai, fine by me, as a spin-off or something. But mixing real suits and environments with subpar CG animation just doesn't work for me. But hey, if the kids get a kick out of it then all is well, that's all that matters. |
Definitely some interesting suits, and it's interesting to see how spot on rumours were this year, even from pretty early on
I do have some hesitancy about what the quality of the CGI will be like, but for main characters in a series where CGI seems to be a big gimmick, I do hope there will be some more time and effort put into the CGI... Though I do hope huge amounts of CGI don't just become more and more of a norm for Toei tokusatsu overall, but that might be a bit of a premature worry lol I probably shouldn't judge the CGI too much until we see how it'll look in the show At this point the big thing I want to know is the head writer for the show! Tbh I kinda want Junko Komura to stay on if it's a sequel-element heavy show (also Junko Komura is just one of my favourite active toku writers I feel like, so I'd just be happy to see her do two shows in a row lol) But if the Zenkaiger connections are more casual then I'd be happy to see a different writer of course. Just curious, does anyone else have a particular writer they'd like to see? |
