Ugh, why are they so ugly like why it not cool. Since Zenkaiser the Sentai suits have been great looking this is just not
|
I like the suits; they look a lot like something a professional race car driver would wear. The helmets are also there.
|
Yikes.
I mean... just... Yikes. Quote:
Also do race car drivers normally wear clown shoes? |

I've seen the leaks and I was going to give my thoughts on those, but then this dropped and... well, I have things to say...
These suits look bad... in the best way! It's such a Showa look from the lips (which I'll admit am not a fan of) to the tire faces with patterns, ala Goranger or Jak-Q, they look very retro. And those shoes... Those gosh darn shoes! I kind of like them. Sure, I'll miss the fantastic designs we've been getting since Lupinranger Vs Patranger, and that we've had such amazing suits since, but I'm not opposed to more retro designs. Though, they are still slightly different from the norm as we've been seeing with some of Reiwa's Sentai designs. Also, from the Poster it's official the "Boon" was intentional and not me thinking they mistranslated "Boom-Boom" though they were probably going for that. I kind of expect something wacky or classical monster-of-the-week for this show, but we shall see. |
I've never seen Talladega Nights, but one of the chicken joints in my area has a poster inside when you go through the drive-thru with Will Ferrell's face and the line "I Wanna Go Fast".
I get that same vibe when I see these suits. It looks like it's sense of identity and character will be rooted in its over-the-top and semi-comedic approach; a Sentai that won't take itself too seriously and focus on the fun that comes from fantasy itself. I don't see what's wrong with the boots, but the helmets are an acquired taste to be sure. Kinda like the seat belt buckle, honestly. Nice subtle touch with a hint of whimsey. The car besides Red is also curious cause it has the same classic touch as the Turbo GT from Turboranger. Remember that red car that Jada included with their Mighty Morphin' Red Ranger Nano Metal-Fig? Not completely unlike that in terms of color and feels. I'm willing to look past the surface details and reserve any harsh presumptuous judgement. I need to see more. |

well anyway i'll see the mecha soon.

I was curious if we'd see the return of armor again. Rather nice to have the slim look back.
Those helmets...Certainly exist. |

Suits are definitely an, acquired taste so to speak, but I don't know, I'm kinda vibing with the more retro look.
Personally, I have much more interest in the writer they brought in. Seems to be someone both new to Sentai while also having a ton of other writing credits, so I'm interested in seeing what they bring to the table |

So the suit I really like. It feels very retro while doing something different in terms of car sentai suit designs with Go-onger suits being the second closest to a racing suit as of now. It almost feels like they added a bit of Ohranger notably with the helmet and took a Go-Busters approach with it by trying to make it look close to what they're referring to while keeping it super sentai. Dare I say grounded for a lack of better words just with the suit alone. And it definitely is an acquired taste, so no disagreement there, but yeah, I like what they've presented. As for the reveal poster, it's like a page out of Uchusen magazine. |
The helmets give me Voicelugger vibes.
|
The rest of the costume is fine, but maaannn... Those helmets are so weird it's good, haha. The whole design gives off a stronger fake/parody Sentai vibe than Akibaranger did. Someone could tell me that this is a Sentai parody for Bridgestone's TV ad and I'd definitely believe it.
The changer braces are so thick and clunky that it's even thicker than the dudes' forearms. In the previous leaks it was shown that the tire on the back was on the left side, but from this new poster there's another tire on the right side. They have 1 tire on the helmet, 2 tires on the back, and 2 tires on the shoes. So, they have 5 tires in total? More juicy weirdness! Haha. It quite makes sense, though. This feels like an inevitable, natural event when a half-century old franchise needs to challenge itself and shake up its design aesthetics once in a while. It needs to look beyond the obvious to discover new possibilities. It needs to look even weirder than its parodies to catch their target audience's attention. It seems like a friend of mine was correct when he jokingly said that weird is the new good. |
This seems to be the basis for their red car from the reveal pic.
https://www.mitsuoka-motor.com/global/lineup/rock-star/ Of course, the one car maker in Japan that loves retro iirc. |

Now that we have a better look of the suits, Boon Red actually reminds me of Kamen Rider Kaixa. Anybody else see it? Quote:

Unlike Go-Onger, this Sentai seems to be advertised as a 3-core initially, so I guess Black and Orange are more comparable to Black Bison and Green Sai, albeit appearing much earlier. Interesting how both Gotchard and Boonboonger are minimalistic with the amount of heroes. |
the suits are just like the glory days on late 70s.
|
The screenwriter worked on a lot of childrens anime so that might be part of them leaning into a more younger-skewing Sentai.
|
Wait, these suits slap! I hope the wheels spin on their face.
|
I'm probably getting too ahead of myself again, but what do you think is the likelihood that the sixth ranger will ride a motobike?
I would also venture to guess that he will be either white or silver. |

The only thing I don't like about the suit is the lack of color on the suits. Replace the gray parts and they'll look better. Here's my little edit.

I get the connection between vehicles and tires but uh that is rough. I kinda expected something more similar to kamen rider drive or have the tire visors be sideways on the helmet but why have the cap be the visor? That just looks awful.

I think another way Toei (or I guess PLEX to be specific) could've went with it was to have the right side of their suit colored to keep the streak going while leaving the left side gray for an asymmetrical look. |

The enemy faction is called Hashiriyan. I guess they'll be going up against an evil street racer group since hashiriya is a term used for street racers in Japan.

I want these villains to be more akin to the Nouto trio from Donbrothers, who are actual characters with development, and who feel more like the heroes' dark peers than they do faceless, generic conquerors. I don't want the Hashiriyan to be another bunch of bad guys with vague motivations and a big boss who sits in a chair for 45 episodes. There's been a lot of experimentation in Sentai over the last few years, and the most successful thing they've done is focus on making the villains as compelling as the heroes. This is something Sentai was really good at in the 90s, and I hope they continue that trend if nothing else. |

On a different topic, while the majority of the rangers are played by new talent in most cases, I wouldn't mind seeing someone experienced play one of the rangers like Hiroki Aiba who played Ryunosuke or Keisuke Minami who played Tsurugi. By this I mean someone who is not an alumni but someone who has already done some years of acting prior to the show and is known somewhat in Japanese drama and film. |
