It's kinda hard to figure out why Takahashi was picked up for writer. The guy's credits include a lot of legal shows that involve brilliant or "perfect" characters who suffer from a major character flaw they have to overcome. At the same time, Lupin was also really big and handled a moderate size cast on the wrong end of the law in a very interesting manner.

My best guess is he's good at handling shows with large casts and main characters with specific quirks. It seems like most of his shows, even the ones that aren't legal dramas, usually center around a character who has a trait that makes them more than just an average joe.
