Okay, time for the last Kyoryuger episode before my filler jump. Episode four!

Although plotwise this isn't the best show in the world the action more than makes up for it. From the Kyoryuger fighting unmorphed because they have no choice, to fighting two generals along with the footsoldier, to the Armed On Roll Call, to all the stylish flair in the stunts and choreography to the sheer sense of power from the heroes attacks, it's just awesome. Souji is my favourite Kyoryuger so far.

Hell, even their giant robot and the shitty combination and cockpit, still has pretty great fights because they are mostly CGI fights which give them freedom of movement and avoid flappy cheap costumes.

I also like how the Commander with the best suit, is getting the most focus, it's just a shame that the way Aigaron speaks is SO ANNOYING. I hope they pick someone less annoying for Dino Charge.

Wait, what? Souji is great.

Souji isn't a bad character, he's just criminally underdeveloped IMO. The whole series he just seemed stuck after the first episode we got to know him. All he existed for was "I'm the sword fighting dude" and "I'm a high school student" til 41 when he finally became a full fledged character. Granted this my opinion of how things played out, but I also liked Souji early on and was disappointed on how the show handled him.

Well I'm only four episodes in but as this is the first bunch of episodes, before my first filler skip, I can honestly say the way the characters were handled in these initial episodes was so so.

As much as I like a red who earns their colour, which is a surprisingly rare thing, I find King borderline obnoxious and a bit of a one man team, which distracted a little bit from the fact his entire motivations during these episodes is getting the team together.

Ami, like most pinks, is a casualty of war. The like one scene of focus she had promised something interesting but then every moment since has just involved the cameras creepy infatuation with her and nothing more.

Souji is the straight man, and a total badass, but I do admit outside of Ami and her utter lack of any characterisation at all he is probably the most bland in terms of character since his only purpose seems to be, being cool. I think he's cool enough to pull it off but he isn't the strongest of characters.

Ian is just really really annoying, I hate unnecessarily antagonistic characters like him. I get that he softened at the end of episode four, but then all we were left with was love bullets and engrish and I just found it a bit awful.

Nobu had really fantastic set up, with a clear goal to fight for and an emotional hook for the audience and so on but after that was finished with all he's been is comic relief and it feels like a giant waste.

Kyoryuger's main flaw is how it dedicates a lot of attention to plot at the expense of character. Then, in the last 8 episodes, everyone grows and changes all at once. Of all the characters, I feel like Souji had the most organic growth.

But even so, the cast brings a lot to the table. Their heavy lifting compensates for a lot of the characters being backgrounded in the scripts.

Kyoryuger is a "along for the ride" sentai series. It lacks tremendous depth, but it's bright, energetic, fun, fastpaced, kinetic, and just self-aware enough for the whole experience to be really enjoyable. Perfect for sparking up a fatty and enjoying the pretty images. :lol

Just wait, you're only getting started on King Sentai Daigoranger :lol.


Sadly Souji is the poster child for that.

I'm trying my best to filter out my own prejudices and stuff I've read and I must admit it is kinda hard to believe at this point that a show so flashy and fun can go downhill as much as people claim it does. But we'll see.

I've come to respect this criticism, even if Daigo never actively bothered me. Daigo's actor embodies the show's high energy rhythm, so it felt natural to me that the show would spotlight him.

Man, I feel like such a Kyoryuger apologist. :lol
