I watched Ghost, the Ghost movie, and Heisei Generations Final!
I have to be honest here, I know this isn't exactly an uncommon opinion, but I think Ghost was pretty bad. I didn't have a miserable time watching it or anything and there were quite a few aspects I liked, but as a whole I found it to be a complete mess. I think I will start with what I did like though. I liked quite a lot of the characters: Akari, Onari, Alain, Igor, and Cubi (my beloved). I thought visually the show was very neat looking. Alain's whole arc from villain to hero was very satisfying, and I also thoroughly enjoyed the stretch of episodes where Makoto has to be saved from the Ganma world. Beyond that though, my opinion sours a lot. I found Takeru uninteresting as a protagonist and often felt like he was detracting from the more interesting characters by hogging the screen time. Makoto has to be the single most *bafflingly* written character I have ever seen in a Rider show. I can't even articulate how surreal I found the way the show managed to do almost nothing with him in spite of coming up with ideas like "what if this guy fought an army of clones of himself". I think this kind of gets to the core issue I had with Ghost, the show felt like it really lacked in any internal consistency. The show would forget things like which characters should be able to see Ganma, who had what items at a given time, and just generally felt like the plot was created on the fly for the most part. Even the way characters interacted was usually so stiff I just had no investment in it. I honestly found watching the show a bit fascinating just because how how strangely it all went wrong! It definitely hurt a bit because it felt like a diamond in the rough, but sometimes you just can't have the show cut into the glistening gem you know it could be deep down. I think this metaphor got away from me, much like how the story seems to have gotten away from the writers of Ghost. I watched Heisei Generations Final after Ghost though, and found it to be a good palette cleanser. Watching it reminds me of how much I love a lot of the shows it featured. I love Build, I love Ex-Aid, I love Fourze! It was nice to see everyone again, and it reminded me of how much I enjoy the characters and writing in these shows! On the other hand, every time I see Eiji crop up in something like this I find myself wishing they would come up with something different from the incessant Reviving Ankh plot they always do. Given how Ankh always finds a way to conveniently die again every time I can't help but wonder if he is just as sick of it as I am. |
I really enjoyed Ghost while watching it. Looking back, I have fond memories, but it definitely had issues. The second quarter was kind of boring, and the home stretch was a mess. That being said, the opening arc (basically Ghost vs Spectre) was really cool, and the Alain arc was super satisfying.
I don't think I dislike it as much as others, but it's not great. On the subject of not being great, I re-watched the first episode of Kamen Rider 1971...that was rough. For its time, it was great. But nowadays, it's hard to watch. |
Currently re-watching the first two episodes of Kamen Rider W.
EDIT: I'm now up to episode 14 of the series and I'm really enjoying W so far. |
Kamen Rider Blade Q3
The staff change is here. Imai's short but dramatic run as head writer has finally reached its conclusion. A typically crazy Inoue story later and now the remainder of the show is in Aikawa's hands. Surprisingly, that wasn't the only change. Blade Brave has been replaced! So how do I feel about that? I like ELEMENTS as a song, but I think it'd work better as an insert or ending, which is pretty much the same opinion I've had for Hibiki's and Gobusters' second OPs. Good songs, just not OP material. I will complain about the visuals though. What's with the Riders acting like a group here? That's like the opposite of how they work in the show. What's with Mutsuki getting credited before Hirose and Kotarou now? Like how Beast Morphers Season 2 had the nerve to credit Zoey before Ravi! Sure, Mutsuki is a Rider, but I don't like how they screw with the credit order here. What's with all the pretentious edginess with Blade punching the camera and the anguished screaming? The Blade Brave Rave was much more appropriate and unique. I will miss it. At least now I know where that one particular Ryukiroll came from though. The Jack Forms are here! Actually, I noticed that out of all the Primary Heisei Riders, Blade takes the longest to get a new form, debuting at Episode 25, one episode later than Hibiki Kurenai. Maybe they thought with all those cards to sell, they didn't need to rush? The reason why it took so long in story was explained that instead of using the Category Jacks normally, they had to be used in conjunction with the corresponding Queens in the Rouse Absorber. For Blade and Garren, they both involve flight. That wouldn't work for Chalice and Leangle, whose Jacks are a wolf and an elephant respectively. I like both aesthetically, but I prefer Garren's red and gold combo, even though the way he gets it is anticlimactic. Uh, King Form is also here! I wasn't expecting that so soon. The Caucasus Undead either doesn't have a name or doesn't want to reveal it, only calling himself and other Undead by rank. King Form seems to be the inspiration for Grand Zi-O. I prefer Jack Form, but what's curious about King Form is that according to Yoshito, Blade's is unique in that Kenzaki has the innate ability to fuse with all 13 cards of his suit simultaneously. That's nothing compared to Hajime's potential though, as he's revealed to be the Joker, the 53rd card in the Undead deck. If he fused with all the cards, he would win the Battle Royale and all life on the planet would end, including Amane and Haruka. Hajime definitely doesn't want that, so he's been trying very hard not to become the Joker ever again. Unfortunately, Blade's new power and the multiple Undead released by Mutsuki triggers the Joker impulse, meaning he has to run away again. Maybe that's why Yoshito considers capturing Kenzaki a higher priority, he's an easier target and it would mean Hajime could keep the Joker suppressed. The Joker's green and black combo reminds me of Kamen Rider 1. The show is lacking Imai's lovable weirdness, but something I think Aikawa is doing right is putting Hirose in the foreground more. I can finally start to talk about her again. Kenzaki was being hunted by Trial D and he believed that made him a liability to people around him. But Hirose called him out for being an idiot and gave him a really honest speech to remind him that his strength comes from his love of humanity, like how Kenzaki told Hajime that he can't protect Amane and Haruka if he's not around (although that doesn't apply right now due to the Joker problem). Team Blade needs a Blade. Of course, Hirose's immortality-obsessed father, Hirose Yoshito, is now in the picture and I'm sure that's going to be a big turning point for Hirose's arc when she finds out, since she wants to atone for his sin. I'm so glad she gets to do other useful stuff! Kotarou's got some development regarding his prejudice towards Undead, even though it goes in circles a lot. He hoped to meet a good Undead so he could believe Hajime was good (by Undead standards anyway), which in his heart he wanted to. But even when Shima shows up with his cute canary Natural, proof of the love between an Undead and another lifeform, his apprehension towards Hajime doesn't immediately go away. I guess it's not like Hajime is suddenly not an a**hole anymore, so maybe Kotarou just needed a little time for his emotions to adjust. At least he has come to accept him being important to his family, even encouraging Kenzaki to rescue him. I hope someday Amane will learn to respect her uncle. Team Blade were sharing a paragraph in my previous reviews so it's cool that I can actually find more to talk about them now. I haven't even mentioned Tachibana yet, since he's just Yoshito's lackey now. Sigh.... This show always needs more Tachibana! I could talk a little about Mutsuki though, who's apparently merged with Spider Undead to become Bully Mutsuki (not sure if anybody else came up with that clever nickname). But I don't buy it. He claims not to care about Nozomi anymore after Caucasus Undead abducted her, but he just seems so tsundere about it. My prediction is that Shima actually did win and this is just Mutsuki being Mutsuki, like he has something to prove that he can be the strongest Rider without relying on others. Like I compared before, Masumi from Boukenger sometimes acts this way, due to his jealousy towards Akashi. Furthermore, Masumi and Mutsuki are the youngest of their respective groups and they don't want to be perceived as just the token teen. |

Rewatched the first two episodes of Saber, and I'm quickly reminded why I dropped this show so early again.
|
So I just saw the recently subbed Saber Hyper Battle and it was just weird on fact it might be one of the kost insane one yet. It's not quite like Faiz which was surreal but like remember ZI-O 12.5 episode with Swartz that had the actor hammed it up with his facial expressions.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ds0OHVnU...jpg&name=large https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ds0OHVqV...jpg&name=large This Hyper Battle is exactly like that but for every Saber character on screen ESPECIALLY Storious. So what does this means is that this is 100/10 reccomend to everyone to watch just for the actors performence alone. |

I'm now up to the final 13 episodes of Kamen Rider W and it looks like this series might be another favorite of mine. If nothing else, the show definitely earned a lot of its hype.
|
Starting Agito and I really did miss this kind of filming and tone of Kamen Rider. The J-drama feel of it! The lack of music and everything that feels real.
Anyway, I just have one question. Do I go into this with the idea in mind that it's a pseudo sequel to Kuuga or do I discard that and just think this as its own show in mind? https://i.imgur.com/SvdWtrf.jpg |

And the show ends up way better for it, IMO. |
It's extremely hard to explain the events of the movie without subs. But I loved it. Kamihourouchi and Fukuda outdid themselves. The movie felt straight out of an early heisei movie or at least like an actual J-drama. The minimal use of music and use of background noise to really feel real. The direction is stellar. The ending is true to the theme song, it's bittersweet.
It's an hour long only, so some places felt needed at least 5 or so minutes more to breath, specifically Rintarou's parts of the movie. But the actors at least sold me on them, Mamiya especially. I loved it. Also I want my SHF Arabian Night now https://i.imgur.com/TNF6kMZ.jpg |
I'm currently watching the final three episodes of W and I'm planning to start watching OOO tomorrow.
|
I'm currently taking a slight detour on watching Kamen Rider OOO, which I'm already a quarter through and enjoying immensely, to watch Movie War Core, which serves as crossover between OOO and W, and then a pair of V-Cinema films of W centering around Accel and Eternal before heading back to the series itself.
|
Series I (Episode 02)
V3 (Episode 02) X (Episode 02) Amazon (Episode 02) Stronger (Episode 02) Sky Rider (Episode 02) Super 1 ( Episode 02) Black (Episode 02) Black RX (Episode 02) Shout Factory had posted the 1st ever Rider episode on You Tube so I started the Rider line. I'll watch the Rider shows on You Tube. |
I'm now up to episode 21 of Kamen Rider OOO and I'm already very close to the show's halfway point. I'm also seriously loving Akira Date/Birth as this show's secondary Rider and Eiji Hino is effectively becoming one of my favorite main Riders of the franchise along with Yusuke Godai, Shouichi Tsugami, and Shotaro Hidari and Phillip.
|
The Rider shows are good. I was thinking Black was blocked by Hasbro. Any chance I'll see shows after Black RX?

Kamen Rider Blade Q4 & Missing Ace: Heisei Era Complete!
https://i.redd.it/4lv50aedlwf51.jpg Wow, okay! There's a lot to cover here, so I'm just going to try and talk about each point chronologically. A Wild Chalice appears! That's the name of Chalice's Final Form, which is apparently on the same level as Blade King Form. While it looks fine enough on its own, I think the red and green combo is way too similar to Garren and I prefer default Chalice. Honestly, it doesn't really make much sense. I've already seen what the Category King of Hearts looks like from Decade and I think it's just kind of weird that Kamen Rider Chalice, which is just Hajime wearing Chalice's skin, gets this conventional power-up when nothing about that Rider System is conventional. It diminishes his reputation as a unique Rider. It probably would've been more appropriate if he just got that new weapon, like how Necrom's power-up was handled. I mean, Hajime already has 53 forms, I really don't think a 54th was necessary. Hirose finally learns that her father is still alive. Well, technically, it's a Trial implanted with the memories of Yoshito. But his heart is also awakened after overcoming Tennouji's tampering and he still cares about Hirose after all. This is where Hirose's arc concludes with her feeling of obligation to atone for her father's sins, which doesn't go exactly as she planned. Even though Yoshito's actions were misguided and he's not completely blameless, this new Battle Royale controlled by the Rider System was a best case scenario. The real villain here is Tennouji, who's using the conflict to become a god and unfortunately, he used Yoshito to make that happen. So the real conclusion here is Hirose not only atoning, but also forgiving Yoshito's sins. It took a while to get here, but I think it was a nice emotional scene with Hirose carrying on her father's will to stop Tennouji and being able to move forward with her life. I mentioned before how it's difficult to call Undead evil when some are merely fighting for the prosperity of their species. That's the harsh reality of the Battle Royale, that only one species can win, so while I don't condone them trying to eradicate humans, I can't exactly hold it against them either. It's eat or be eaten in this case. Hikaru gives the best insight so far in to what such an honorable Undead looks like, someone who doesn't so much hate humans, but will do anything to create her world of tigers, like how Heart from Drive truly cared about Roidmudes. I didn't expect her to last much longer than the average Royal Undead, so I was really impressed with how much character development she got. That's why she's getting her own paragraph here. She's sympathetic, since she finds out that winning the current Battle Royale, her ultimate goal, is impossible. Tennouji took that away from her, making all her fighting pointless. But rather than resign to becoming a card for his evil scheme, she uses her life to do some good for the human Mutsuki she befriended, sealing herself to save his human heart. If not for the Battle Royale, she probably would've been a hero. It's a tragedy, but there's also some hope, that even if your ultimate fate is already decided, what you do before then is always up to you and you can always choose to do some good! If there's one thing I think Aikawa screwed up, it's Mutsuki. I thought I understood where his redemption arc was going, with Mutsuki gradually learning that his pretense of not caring about anyone doesn't actually make him stronger. Kenzaki showed how his strength comes from his love of humanity and Hikaru showed how power for power's sake is a waste of time. I could see that armor chipping away, like Mutsuki was on the cusp of realizing how much of an idiot he was being. But then his failed henshin in to King Form gives him a magical free ticket to his arc's conclusion. This is the part where he allegedly became a "true Kamen Rider", which is ridiculous since pretty much every Leangle scene after this has him getting beat up, even getting 1-hit KO-ed by default Garren! And who's even running his Spider Bar anymore? It's like his arc only exists to make Hikaru and Tachibana look cool, cause Mutsuki sure doesn't. I have no idea what Imai had planned for him, but it probably would've been better than this. Tachibana sadly doesn't get much focus since the staff change, which feels like Aikawa wasn't sure what else to do with him. But he does get a few memorable moments that show his development and how cool he actually is sometimes when he's not making another epic fail. Like when Yoshito locks him the robot fridge and tries to convince him to go along with the plan by telling him they can revive Sayoko. But Tachibana remembers her wish, that she wouldn't want that and so neither does he. That's the wake-up call he needed to see that Yoshito isn't on the side of justice. And there's a big one just before the finale, where he's about to seal Hajime, until he hears an emotional phonecall between him and Amane and he can't bring himself to destroy that relationship. So he chooses to have faith in his friends that they can find an alternative. That's the act of a true hero, rejecting the path of cynicism that possessed him for so long, in favor of a little hope. It's also cool to note that, since Garren sealed the penultimate Giraffa Undead, he's therefore the Rider who decided the outcome of the Battle Royale. However, another way of phrasing that is that Tachibana caused the apocalypse.... His intentions were good though! :p The finale is all about Kenzaki's and Hajime's friendship and rivalry, as the aforementioned apocalypse forces them to clash once more. Fate leaves Kenzaki two options, either seal Hajime to save humanity or let the world end. Kenzaki doesn't see Hajime as an Undead. He sees another human, which is similar to Takumi's and Kiba's final battle. To save humanity by sacrificing a human is a betrayal of his belief. He failed to save his parents and he doesn't want to fail Hajime here. Even if Kenzaki can't fight fate the way he wanted to, at least he can outrun it. Choosing to become an Undead to force the Sealing Stone to restart the Battle Royale is the ultimate "screw you" he can give. Fate is all about ending and change, but Kenzaki's action leaves it open-ended, a status quo that will continue indefinitely. It's bittersweet, since they both get to live, but Kenzaki migrates to probably the other side of the world, having to abandon all his friends. I knew the bench was a thing, but I didn't understand until now what it meant. That bench is the symbol of Kenzaki's and Hajime's camaraderie. Even though they can never see each other again, they're eternally together in their mutual sacrifice for humanity. Like looking up and seeing the same sky. Overall, Kamen Rider Blade easily makes my top 10, as you can see below. It maintains what's new and fresh about Heisei Rider, while returning to the roots of heroism and sacrifice that started with the Showa Era. It brings both of those philosophies together in a way that makes sense and gives a very meaningful and satisfying story. Sure, there's the fountain of memes that this show is both famous and infamous for, but disregarding that, I think this show has a lot of heart and defines what a Kamen Rider should be, as someone who always holds on to hope. Even with the dreaded staff change, it still felt like the same show rather than an inferior sequel, although I did miss the novelty of Imai's writing style. But it's a credit to Aikawa that he was able to take the wheel so suddenly and my only complaint is that it merely lost a little flavor. I enjoyed watching this show for sure, especially whenever Tachibana did something foolish. It's taken me about 13 years to get to this point, but now please look at My Complete Heisei Rider Ranking: 1) Faiz 2) Build 3) Fourze 4) Ghost 5) Wizard 6) Double 7) Kiva 8) Blade 9) Decade 10) Drive 11) Kabuto 12) Den-O 13) Ryuki 14) OOO 15) Zi-O 16) Hibiki 17) EX-Aid 18) Agito 19) Kuuga 20) Gaim Every four of a kind needs a kicker though. So I'll share my thoughts about the movie as well. Missing Ace is set in an alternate continuity, as is often custom for Phase 1 summer movies. Unlike the others, this is an alternate future where Kenzaki sealed Hajime and stayed a human. Those ugly-looking cyclops Riders from the World of Diend made their debut here and both versions of Junichi are even portrayed by the same actor. I feel like Inoue's summer movies can be hit or miss, but this one was pretty good. There are a few plot holes, like how both of the Jokers were apparently destroyed even though that should be literally impossible. Other than that, it was entertaining with Inoue bringing out all his exaggerated comedy tropes and Leangle even got a win against the Category Ace of Spades. Amane was here, but portrayed by a different actress, presumably to appear closer to 14 years old, which is ironic when you consider that Amane was portrayed by the original actress in Zi-O. Nothing against the new actress, but I would have preferred if they stayed more consistent. I also understand now why ELEMENTS doesn't sound like an OP, since it seems like it was originally intended as an ending theme here. I've still got a Showa backlog to complete, so next up is SkyRider. |

IIRC you once mentioned reading Die's' thread alongside your watch, so you probably already know my general thoughts about the show. So, I'll try to make my general thoughts short. To me, Blade was a much better version of Faiz, in terms of the experience. Especially since I watched Blade almost directly after I'd finished Faiz up. What I mean is, with Faiz, I loved the first two acts, but couldn't stand the third. The same applies to Blade. But what differentiated the two for me, and made me appreciate Blade alot more, was that absolutely perfect ending that Blade has. "Bench" is a long standing Blade meme for a reason, ya know? I'm like the one guy who preferred the first half to the second. The first half kept me really interested all throughout. I was constantly wondering just where the heck this crazy train was going. Meanwhile, when the second half hit, and the show got more "normal"... it just lost alot of appeal for me. Add to that me not jiving with the way Mutsuki and Tachibana were handled and I was not happy. Still, I'm glad you found a good amount of enjoyment out of it, judging by where you placed it on your list. :thumb: |
If I remember rightly I think the middle may have been my favourite bit lol but yeah I do see similarities between Faiz and Blade in terms of quality (it's better for some imagery, music etc being memorable than characters/story being that fantastic) whereas sometimes I can genuinely enjoy Kuuga,Agito and Ryuki equally imo.

My immediate thought after seeing Kenzaki become a new Undead and walk away was how he's doing what Hirose told him not to do, but from a different perspective, it's no longer a burden he's carrying alone. Hajime's sharing his suffering. It was a great ending for sure. I personally wouldn't consider it to be better than Faiz's, although I concede that you have a valid complaint about Kiba's abrupt turn to evil. I will also say that I think Blade's ending did right what Gaim's did wrong, by giving Kenzaki and Hajime a less contrived reason to fight and a resolution that doesn't involve either of them getting killed. Shoutout to Skyrider episode 25 for taking the whole "monster child" concept you see in Showa toku to its most insane extreme. Never thought I'd see Tsukuba become the adopted mom of a rapidly growing monster turtle child named Bongo but here we are.

Kenzaki meanwhile, not only never had such an issue, but was also the only one to actually get to have a King Form to begin with. So who knows, had Garren King Form happened, maybe Tachibana would run the same risk of becoming an Undead(probably not given the overall themes of the story but hey). |
I'm now up to episode 35 of OOO. Only 13 to go.

I think it's said somewhere, around when Kenzaki gets his King Form, that it's supposed to only be a fusion between him and the King Undead. However, because Kenzaki is just that empathetic, he ends up fusing with all 13 in the Suit, which has consequences on his biology pretty quick.
|
Quote:
|
The reason for Kenzaki's high fusion rate is also so simple it doesn't demand much explaining to begin with. The early episodes (7 is especially thorough in its exposition) make it a point that it goes up the more intense his emotions are (in contrast to Tachibana's going down because of his constant doubt and hesitation), and nobody else in the series is anywhere close to as earnest or as straightforward as Kenzaki. Keep in mind his initial transformation into King Form also comes right after the whole "I'm a Kamen Rider!" fight where he's pretty much the most focused he's been in the entire show to that point, too. Essentially, Kenzaki's King Form works that way because he's so good at being a superhero, he's basically overclocking the Rider System. Or at least that's how I've always understood it.

Finished episodes 37 and 38 of OOO today and I seriously could not get over on how much fun I’m having with this series. Also couldn't believe I'm already down to its remaining 10 episodes.
|
I'm now up to to episode 46 of OOO. I can't believe I'm officially close to the end of the series already and it's fast becoming another favorite Kamen Rider series of mine right alongside with W, Dragon Knight, Agito, Ryuki, and Kuuga. I'm also trying to figure out what KR series I'm going to watch next after it. I'm kind of leaning towards either Black/Black RX or Faiz or Blade or even Kabuto. May or may not watch Zero-One in between.
|
Finished OOO last night and this series is a real fun ride from start to finish and I'm really glad that I watched it. Once again, I really can't thank everyone here enough for recommending this as well as W to me.
|
I've spent the last five days watching Revice The Mystery part by part (which was a great way to do it, for the record), and I've gotta say, I thought it was pretty much an ideal TELASA spinoff. It doesn't really feel like something you could just do on the show's usual timeslot, it doesn't feel like something they should've just done in the show, and crucially, it's also telling a legitimately pretty solid and entertaining story. Uchida's writing pretty effortlessly treats Kamen Rider as one big universe without getting bogged down by pointless details, getting right to the core fun of seeing characters we like, acting in character, returning and teaming up with unexpected new partners, and the actual central murder mystery is delivered in a solid enough way that I don't think people only watching for Revice itself would feel totally lost.
Another thing I also *massively* appreciated was the use of proper BGM not only from Revice, but from literally every show that was featured in a notable capacity. Probably helps that half of them are from the same composer, but still. It might seem like a small thing to some people, but I really believe that even on a basic subconscious level, those motifs make a huge difference. It's like, what would be the point of having Accel if you don't have this playing when he shows up too, you know? |
Continuing to work my way through Skyrider. You know, I used to think Stronger was the top tier of cracktastic Showa era Kamen Rider, but I'm now at the point where Gan Gan G is introduced and I genuinely felt like I was having some kind of fever dream. I felt like I was gazing into the abyss of madness there.
|
Upon thinking about it for a few days, I decided to try again in watching Kamen Rider Black and hopefully be able to make it pass the first 10 episodes this time. I also hope I don't end up having a severe case of Hype Backlash towards like I unfortunately have with Samurai Sentai Shinkenger.

Watched OOO10YA
I'm sad, but also, I'm kinda not that mad about it since it feels sorta right. But I'm still sad. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...22/unknown.png |
