I re-watched "Drive Saga: Kamen Rider Brain" by accident. As in, I wanted to have a quick peak and then just watched the whole thing again.
This is low-key one of my favorite Kamen Rider things, ever. It is so much fun. The gags hit, mainly due to Shota Matsushima's crazy fun performance as Brain, but the whole thing is just such a well written and fun parody of all things Kamen Rider, I love it. I will never get tired of Brain calling the Mu-members "bargain sale leftovers that couldn’t defeat a Kamen Rider" or Dark Ghost trying to insult Brain by telling him that his weapon is just a repaint :lol And it's not just the comedy, the action is awesome too, so well executed for a Fan-club special, it’s really good. If you haven’t seen this one yet, give it a go. Works wonders even if you haven’t seen Kamen Rider Drive, but will be even better if you did. |
I finally continued right where I left off on Kamen Rider Blade on which I am now a little more than halfway through the series. If this show keeps it up, Blade might also be among my top favorite seasons of Kamen Rider. Just finished the episode where Kenzaki gets his Jack Form. Only 23 episodes to go.

Finally watched Episode 2 of Outsiders now that a sub of it actually showed up on the cat site.
Probably the best one so far? It focuses on Ren and Desast in a post-series world and I think that's pretty cool. Helps that it isn't a retread of a previous series (0 being a Genms epilogue) while also having more of the crossover element in play (Ouja's was pure Ryuki until the end really). Also the fact that Zein is starting to grab his own posse, what with Horobi being awoken by Foundation X only to immediately side with Zein, and Nico deciding to side with Zein too (honestly better for her than what she was went for at the end of Brave and Snipe, that's for sure). Though idk guys... eradicating all evil? Something tells me that plans going to go horribly wrong. Overall, pretty fun and Kamen Rider Desast is a sick design. |
I am now down to the final nine episodes of Kamen Rider Blade. I should be able to finish this series very soon.

So I got into Kamen Rider in the early 2010's. First series I watched from the start, as it was airing, was Wizard. But it's not as if I jumped right in at episode one having no idea what was going on. I'd checked out a few episodes of OOO, I watched Movie Wars Megamax, and people seemed to be having a blast with Fourze. But it was a series I'd never watched - until now.
(Yes, having seen Megamax and Movie Wars Ultimatum and all the movies since, I've seen the ending of Fourze's story before any of the actual story. But it'll still be a fun ride!) And on that note - Kamen Rider Fourze - Episodes 1 & 2 https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...743&height=418 Is it bad to be nostalgic for an episode structure? Our first 2-part arc is the basic set-up for the series (Look, Cosmic Switch! Zodiarts! Evil teacher! Asshole students who are in the opening sequence so they'll hopefully mellow out sooner than later!) mainly focused around Gentarou and Kengo. And they're a fun duo. Gentarou could easily come across as a cocky asshole, were it not for two things - his rock-bottom intelligence, and his earnestness. His first apparance is chewing Kengo for rejecting some girl, then to jump off a bridge to bring back the letter! Which he does! And the says he'll still befriend Kento, JUST TO SPITE HIM! (I've seen that quote before! I thought it was an edit!) He's just operating on his own rules of reality, where he can convincingly approach the footballers who used him as training practise, brush past them calling him trash, and still try to say "You're my friend" to the monster, and mean it. Kengo is simpler at this point, by virtue of not being the main protagonist, but he's clearly bitter over being unable to fight, his anger at Gentarou for butting in just as much a symptom of his own anger at his own failing body. Yuki is mainly here to serve as the glue between them, but she's still likeable, as her own kooky and offbeat self while still having enough grounding in the real world that she can mediate between the pair. (We also meet Tomoko for like, five seconds, and the spooky witchy girl being the one to trace an IP address? Yeah, that's funny. JK is also here.) All the football stuff is reminding me of an old joke (I don't remember where from) about the kid from Sharkboy and Lavagirl having 7 year old flunkies, which is how Shun and Mio come across here. Haughty and above-it-all, which makes them the obvious targets. Miura's aggression at the lack of respect isn't dealt with amazingly - he basically gets one Gentarou speech about "Bro kick his ass at football, don't deal with your problems by blowing up the school" - and he's honestly more sympathetic than his victims here, but the episode gracefully defuses that tension by having Gentarou and Yuki there for him at the end after they detonate his monster form. He was a kid taking out his pent up aggression, not some monster who deserves no sympathy. A good opning! And we only saw 6 switches in use! By modern standards, that's barely any of the merchandise being used! |

Kamen Rider Fourze - Episodes 3 & 4
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...1939/image.png Yes, it's also the one with the infamous JAV pool. Hahaha. Core question in these two episodes - is Mio's better-than-thou attitude justified by the amount of work she puts in? Gentarou's answer, and the episode itself, takes a firm "Yes" stance. She puts so much effort into being the best, and is disappointed by others who she feels want to just feel good for liking her. It's not exactly a bad character ideal (or flaw) to have, but my god does she make herself incredibly unlikeable in the process. Tearing up fanmail while demeaning the person who wrote it is not a good look! And I'm not sure the episode fully manages to cross that boundary in the second part with making it seem worth it. (Also, Shun was totally ready to cheat on his girlfriend(?) behind her back, also not a good look for you buddy! You're in the Opening Credits, get some morals!) I'm not going to stand here and lecture on how your characters "Have" to be likeable, that's not how televison works, but I feel the episode misjudges the emotional reaction it wants you to have? Mio's little speech to Chameleon Cheerleader at the end, where she's like "I'm glad you finally showed your true colours" and it's treated as some bonding moment, maybe I'm just not coming at it from the right angle? Because it can very easily read as "I'm a bastard to you, but it's okay because it made you stronger", which is not the best moral for a kids show. And it's the second story in a row where the Victim of the Week is a popular kid sidekick jealous of their friend, who may be a dick, which is giving me bad vibes? It's not quite on the level of "Fighting back against your bully is bad" because both monsters are also on the bully side - and Chameleon Cheerleader is definitlely weirdly possessive of 3rd cheerleader - but I hope it's not a trend that continues! Gentarou, though, is a positive throughout all this. Only he could try and convince someone to win a bet against himself, who openly calls him trash, because he can see how much she truly cares for it. He even likes the Hopping Switch. And I guess that's what I have to try and draw the moral line fron? Like how the Hopping Switch can be useful, you just have to be able to work with it, Mio's brand of haughtyness is good, you just have to know how to use it? I don't know about that for sure... |

Yeah, Fourze's not a show that necessarily feels the need to rehabilitate its characters so much as one that wants us to understand where they come from. Miu is still a problematic alpha bitch, but she's our problematic alpha bitch. |
Geats?Revice subs coming out reminds me that i never actually finished Revice despite being one of the rare people who still loved it by the final quarter. (Got too distracted by Donbros). Gonna get started on finishing it plus it's side content tonight

I watched the second episode of The Outsiders. Well, as I wrote earlier, the show is clearly filmed in such a way that it will have to be reviewed in its entirety, but this episode itself was interesting. The characters were written in broad strokes, but since this isn't just about Ren and Desast, it's about Horobi as well, I think it's the format that's at fault, not the screenwriter. The highlight of this episode is Kamen Rider Desast, his book and seiken are awesome. The battles are great too. Overall, I'm excited about Desasta's resurrection and wondering where the story will go next.

I just finished Kamen Rider Blade not too long ago and it is a very solid series from start to finish. They are seriously not kidding when the show reaches a very high point after episode 30. I am trying to decide what Kamen Rider series I’m planning to watch next. Probably either Kiva or Kabuto. At least I am now two-thirds of the early Heisei era of the franchise with only Kiva, Kabuto, and Hibiki remaining unaccounted for before eventually jumping into Decade.
|
Watched the first episode of Juuga vs Olteca. Well, Revice is surprisingly willing to crossover with Drive without even bothering to introduce Drive-visestamp into the show. It was quite funny and intriguing, albeit very hastily.

I'm capping off my viewing of Kamen Rider Blade (I already watched its Hyper Battle Video beforehand which I find to be very entertaining) by watching its Missing Ace movie which serves as somewhat of an alternative ending to the series.

Had the misfortune of watching the Geats x Revice movie. Pretty much a total miss for me.
Mainly, I think I'd rather they just left the Ryuki stuff out of it entirely. I get why they thought it'd be a fun little thing to have them in a Geats thing, but their part in this movie was almost insultingly superfluous. Just absolutely nothing going on there story-wise. The kind of roles you'd usually see filled by a recycled Shocker monster or stuff of that level. The plot and the antagonists overall are just so bare-bones and worthless. Not any fun to watch, no interesting twists or ideas. Some of the most going-through-the-motions movie fare I've seen, which is really saying something. About the only things I can say I liked is, the old Riders using the Rider system of the new show is fun, and it was nice to see the original Glare suit again instead of the uggo 2 repaint. Maybe one or two good character interactions in there (liked Ace honing in on the Igarashi's appreciation for family and Ikki's desire to retain his memories). I don't know what I'm expecting every time I go into one of these crossover films. I didn't especially love the last couple I watched, but man did this one feel particularly disposable. |
I also watched Movie Battle Royal. I also agree that Ryuki's Riders look like they were added at the last moment, but perhaps this is justified by the appearance of the actors and some kind of plot (although Ryuki's lore got confused back in the noughties). It's also funny that they didn't let the veteran villains get beaten by the rookies. Also on the plus side are a well-placed and varied action (including on vehicles, finally!), a cute baby demon, a well-woven fight between riders. That is, they do not immediately become friends, but they do not fight just to fight (as in Chou Super Hero Taisen). Perhaps it can be added as a plus that the Desire Royal concept will continue to be used in the show itself. At the same time, yes, the plot and emotionally the film feels empty. Even when compared with the first crossovers of the early tenths, there was something to tell at least in individual parts. Here we get the finale of Revice, which didn’t get into the show (whose concept Wizard realized better ten years ago) and, albeit entertaining, but not so exciting as to forgive him emptiness, action. So I hope there's a better script for the next crossover.
Small remarks: - Due to Geat's non-standard preferences, we didn't get a gunslinger duel. It's a shame; - Seeker is clearly better at using Power Builder than Geats; - My idea that the artificial person should be Keiwa, not Neon, was unexpectedly confirmed. That is, all the demons were responsible for the negative or hidden parts of the character of the owners, and his demon wants the same salvation for everyone as Keiwa himself. - Neon is shown to be a worse person than Sakura, throwing things around and disturbing people while the "Demonic Rider" stops to help them. It is clear that the purpose of the comic effect and the emphasis is more on the difference between the morals of the shows than its specific characters; - Michinaga is not in character at all; -Given all his words and actions, Girori must have seriously believed that saving the world is the main goal of the DGP and the show is just a by-product. Alternatively, he could be a human from our time, recruited like Neon's father. |
Hey everyone
Doing my occasional pop back in (if anyone is left that I used to be a regular with back when), I've been watching Geats quietly in my free time and now all caught up, so I thought I would share some overall thoughts like the old days. I think Geats has so far told an an interesting story, and I do like the ensemble nature of the cast, with Geats being a pretty typical Rider protagonist, but used slightly differently (even if the acting isn’t always the best). However, I will say, even by Rider standards, this feels like they are absolutely making up almost everything on the fly, this makes a show of great *moments* but it all doesn't hold that well together when taking a step back. Sure, there are some narrative threads woven through the show, but the majority of the developments feel like they come from nowhere and the DGP Organisation's ability to basically do anything means there isn’t a cohesive set of rules that govern this universe consistently all the way through. This is exasperated by how awfully paced this show is, in general. There are so many episodes in this show you could skip with almost no consequence, and oftentimes the “threaded” beats feel more like things they raised early on, forgot about and then suddenly rushed to resolve when they remembered, whether it really makes much sense from an overall pacing perspective or not. I remember a long time ago when Kyoryuger finished and someone did an episode watch list and it dropped like almost 30 episodes from what I remember, I feel like you'll very much be able to do that with Geats when it is all over, too. In terms of the Riders, I think it is a cool concept to have effectively three types of Riders with different purposes, but outside of the Vision Driver suits, I think almost all of the suits in this show are so damn ugly. Although I will say I liked Geat’s Boost Mark II suit, (although less when it was fused together with the Laser Riser). Those Sponsor forms where they turn into bad CG Zord like things… my word, just awful. It is a shame, as I really like the concept of the contestant Riders as like a power set, and I dunno whether it is just cost saving or genuine restraint, but there was a real opportunity go form crazy here, but instead they created a limited pool of abilities the Riders could use, which we grew familiar with over the course of the show. I much prefer this to just spamming throwaway forms we see once or twice. I just think the physical execution of the idea is just not very good. This might also just be a downside of the HD era, where you can see in crystal detail it's just a cheap body suit with bits of foam shit stuck on it, with no illusion to it being anything else. I dunno, I am watching Blade alongside this and its in like 240p or something but I dunno man... THOSE are suits. Why do I want to see so many black tights here in Geats? I will say I do think I am somewhat spoiled by modern Rider action, because I think the action in this show is not great, but I do concede that compared to older Rider, they really don’t hold back on the special effects here. There are almost no regular punches or kicks to be found in this show, every fight has multiple Riders flying around the screen, firing off lasers, defying the laws of gravity and smashing into each other with these big special effects heavy super moves like straight up Dragonball Z shit, but I dunno, I just felt so cold during so much of the action here. I really like the battles involving the Vision suits, and Ziin’s gravity defying feats were also cool (even if I don’t like that suit design), but both make up a very small portion of the overall action serving you are getting here. I think if I was to pinpoint why I felt so cold, I’d say a lot of the action here just feels kinda mindless. Although there are proper antagonists, the majority of the enemies in this show who fight directly are just footsoldier enemies who are never presented as offering much threat. I love properly established villains in direct showdowns with my heroes, where we feel like we understand the side of both sides of the battle, where there are stakes and investment. No one remembers a battle against a crowd of Putties as their favourite fight scene, no matter how many lasers they add. I dunno. Like I’m watching Blade alongside this, and a lot of the special effects in that show are rubbish with really clunky action scenes, but man the locations, the way those scenes are shot, edited and lit, every Undead feels like a huge threat, and every battle feels like a tense showdown to the death. I feel so much more invested in those action scenes, even though they have almost no lasers. So yeah, reading this back, this all sounds kinda negative and that's a shame, as around I dunno now, maybe the best part of ten years ago I kinda fell off the toku hobby train and have never been able to get back on board again for reasons mostly unknown to me. I've tried to follow basically every Rider show post Gaim but for whatever reason I just didn't vibe with a bunch of those shows, or even if I was enjoying them I fell off somewhere and fell so far behind I just sorta gave up. In fact, when I think about how much I actually watched of shows like Drive, Ex-Aid and Zero One, I probably could have actually finished at least one of them. But either way, Geats is the first one that has held me right up until the point I am actually caught up. That has to count for something. |

I don't know if it's the kind of show that's up your alley, but if you want something that has more weighty fights and creative cinematography, I'd recommend checking out Ultraman Z. It's not completely free of these kinds of issues, but it's got some excellent action sequences and may give you what you're not getting from Kamen Rider anymore. |

I know this is a weird hill with toku as everything is rubbery, but there is a difference between a well designed monster suit and flappy cardboard robots (which is why I always struggled with Sentai, because I always thought the mecha stuff was rubbish. They did start updating it a bit when I was last watching regularly but not nearly as much as you would expect). Maybe that is genius for selling toys or whatever, but it does pull me out of it when they are using very obviously plastic guns, or props where its only painted on one side like a toy or whatever. I guess in Geats they spent all their money on shooting laser beams at each other, and in some regards it pays off, but I'd happily see you cut the lasers by half and get some props that actually look like they were made for a professional show, and not just like someone grabbed the toys straight off the shelf. Thanks for the rec on Ultraman Z, always been kind of blindspot of mine, will look it up. Do I need to have seen any other Ultraman stuff? |

Kamen Rider Fourze - Episodes 5 & 6!
https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...743&height=418 So I'm in two minds about this. The moral is very clearly "To be someone's friend, you have to accept them as they are", which isn't necessarily bad. And Gentarou isn't going to pretend JK's not a dick, he's not that naive. But JK is just so cartoonishy a jerk! He steals the Elek Switch for no reason other then "Lol, lmao", and as Gentarou points out, he almost deserves what Ultraman Victory is about to do to him. But I'm willing to cut the kid some slack. He's seen how his version of life pays off (Being killed by a Unicorn), versus Gentaou's support network. He's got room to grow. I just hope he does, because "I'll let you abuse me becase I know you're like that but I'm your friend so I'll deal with it"... it's not a healthy mindset to instill in kids. I've seen that go nuclear before. As for Elek States, it's fine. I'm not the biggest fan of yellow Fourze, but it does the job in being different enough and not looking overtly overpowered yet, considering we're only six episodes in. Granted, modern Rider shows would probably have like 5 new costumes in that time, but shush. Also, really liking Mio's dynamic here with Kengo and Yui. |
JK is easily my least liked character in Fourze. And it'll speak for itself as to why over and over again.

I can definitely see me liking him once he gets a little more screentime - his bit at the end about opening the Rabbit Hutch as a theme park or whatever is pretty funny - but it's a rough first outing. At this rate, I expect it to be revealed Shun kicks puppies during football training or something*.
* Gentarou will say this is bad, but he supports his friend's desire to train in the way that he learns best. |
I've decided to rewatch 555 as it's been over a decade and I remember embarassingly little, currently 4 episodes in, Takumi's starting to warm up to Mari and jesus christ poor Yuka

Kamen Rider Fourze - Episodes 7 & 8
https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...743&height=418 You know, I've never even seen The Breakfast Club, and now I don't have to. I get Shun's tragic backstory (His dad's a dick! He's actually sympathetic! Mio and JK wish they were this!), I get a niche obscure constellation dog man delinquent, and I get the creepiest teacher known to man. He is delighting in punishing these students, probably because he's living vicariously through them to try and fix his own son. Or maybe he's just salty about formerly being a Professor studying the mirror universe and now he's teaching Gentarou. Honestly, a really nice pair of episodes, both for the MOTW plot, and to see Mio and JK strike out on their own and be useful. The flipside of JK's absolutely suprficial nature means he's also the one to be able to dig out dirt, and Mio shows off her spine and determination in being the club leader meaning she has to take charge and kick ass. It's a good showing for the whole group, especially in Shun managing to redeem himself by episode's end and help fight off Scorponok - who I'm guessing is woman teacher, mainly due to lack of other options. It sure ain't Ohsugi, I know enough Kamen Rider lore for that. |
I watched Juuga VS Olteca.
I mostly enjoyed it. The comedy here was amusing, which is the easiest thing to recommend. Like George getting excited over meeting another sempai and lampshading all the Drive references, Daiji's and Hiromi's endurance contest, George sporadically singing parts of his theme song and Wizard Girl reminding everybody that she's Wizard Girl (why KR Girls keep getting typecast as villains in these specials though?). Regarding the plot, it's pretty thin, but I appreciate how it stays connected to Revice with the other Gif Eyeball. It's easily the most Revice-y Revice content I've seen since Episode 46. I liked George's epic speech to Takada, about how any technology created to surpass humanity is inherently a waste of time. It sounded appropriately insulting to Takada, with George giving him so much sass while also making a good point. However, my favorite scene is the brief exchange between Tamaki and Olteca. It's the first time in a while we've seen these guys, like, have a talk, without Tamaki blowing a fuse and wanting to punch Olteca on sight. Last time we saw him, he was working for Aguilera's detective agency, but now he reveals he's moved on from following Aguilera. There's sadness in letting go of somebody you've dedicated so much time to, but this bittersweet independence gives him the freedom to look for somebody who will reciprocate his feelings. I think that's partially why Tamaki is able to speak so amicably to Olteca now, like the friends they used to be, since Tamaki has put the hurt of that betrayal behind him and encourages Olteca to do the same. He doesn't explain exactly how Olteca is supposed to that, being a super notorious criminal and all, but the sentiment is there and the advice is more helpful than trying to crush his wrist (looking at you Aguilera) at least. #NiceTamaki! Despite being the title and premise of this special, the climactic fight of Juuga VS Olteca feels more like a formality. George's and Olteca's rivalry is a matter of pride, as they fight each other to prove who's the better genius prodigy. But I think it's more intriguing to consider what they have in common, their mutual refusal of Takada's belief that surpassing humanity is necessary for humanity's improvement. George and Olteca both want to become better versions of themselves, by their own means, which seems to be a foundation for their respect. Takada essentially serves as the main villain of this special, but once he's dealt with, George and Olteca revert to their old ways. George is still kind of a narcissistic a**hole (albeit a lovable one), while Olteca is off to go conquer the world again, maybe join the Outsiders' fight against Zein if he feels like it. I think Olteca's dynamic with Tamaki is ultimately more, like, dynamic, than the "I'm so much smarter and cooler than you" thing he has going with George. Overall, I'd say this is another one of the pleasant oases in the desert called Revice. It's got flaws, of course, but I thought it was worth watching for the humorous jokes, the minor but overdue development for side characters who needed it the most and stuff for Drive fans as well. |
I just started watching both Kamen Rider Kiva and Kamen Rider Wizard as of today.

Wizard is really underrated. Enjoy!

Kiva is also a Kamen Rider show. Enjoy?

Kamen Rider Fourze Episodes 9 and 10
https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...743&height=418 (I was hoping to grab a better screenshot of Kengo using his facts and logic against the witches, but I forgot) Continuing on the good streak from last time, the show settling into its rhythm allows it to fashion the most obvious "You don't need to change, you're good as you are" moral around Tomoko. Considering she's been hanging around since Episode 1, it's surprising it's taken her this long to formally join, but I guess we had to get the less likable characters out the way first. Her story is pretty simple - fall into a destructive group because they're not as outright mocking, but still not being good enough for them, until Gentarou comes along and tells her she's good as is. There's a line from Tomoko's mum, about how happy she is that Tomoko finally has some "normal friends", and that hits a little close to home. The pacing on this one is strange, though - we have the debut of Fire States and the reveal of the Zodiarts full scheme by the end of Part 1, but that lets part 2 breathe and be more about the emotions at play than uncovering a villainous plot. Also, the direction on this one feels different to usual? A few fun angles and interesting distortion tricks. It makes up for the Zodiarts herself being a little thin on the ground. Her two sidekicks have credible enough revenge plots (Love Mio tearing into the girl for skipping class as she's committing arson! Comedy gold), but Altar's motivation is explained basically in one flashback and that's it. Nice to finally have the gang from the opening credits all together, if nothing else! |
This is my favorite pair of episodes in Fourze, and a big part of why was the introduction of my favorite character of the season: Spooky Chick!
