Tried to get into Garo for the third time, failed again. It's not just that I'm completely bored by everything that's going on; I could continue and see if that changes, but the horrible CGI burns my eyes. Tokusatsu is more than guys in suits, I’m aware of that, but I’m still a little bit mad that this is called "Tokusatsu" when everything Garo does except standing around is done through shitty computer effects.
I don’t dig the design of anything in this show either; everything’s too dark and "hardcore". Which is exactly what they seem to be going for, but I don’t dig it. Everything seems like a child imagining how something scary should be like to me, instead of it being really scary. So I decided that Garo just isn’t for me and if the first season which people call the best of them won’t make me want to watch more, I’m not even bothering with the rest of the franchise. Back to watching Ultraman it is. |

Honestly the newest season that just came out even though it uses CGI, uses the Suits more and was really good. I think it was one of the best, but I am also the weird guy who doesn't tout the first season as the best season. It has really good action and story in most seasons. But still if it's not your cup of tea than it's not. UltraMan is awesome too. |
I'm rediscovering the first season because Over-Time are currently doing new subs for it, and I still adore it, but Makai Senki remains my favourite Garo.
I do hold Garo as perhaps my favourite toku franchise, as it has delivered even when Rider & Sentai faltered (Thank god for Goldstorm when SHT was Ninninger & Drive). That said, I can completely appreciate that it won't be for everyone. |

Liking Ultraman X so far. All caught up except for the latest episode.
I decided to check out some of the first episodes of the other Ultraman series available on Crunchyroll. I think I'll end up watching them all in order, except maybe 80. I dunno what it is but the first ep of that one didn't impress me all too much. I'll give it another shot once I'm done with Leo though. Leo is...surprisingly somber though. I feel super bad for those kids in episode 3. I hope they get adopted by some super rich family in another country because holy shit, that's a lot of trauma they went through in one episode. I like how Leo is constantly going through this karate training to learn how to better defeat this monster. I like the idea in general of an alien who left his dying home planet and coming to Earth being super into Karate for whatever reason. |
Finally got around to watching the Garo Gold Storm movie. That was utterly fantastic, easily the best the franchise has been since Makai Senki.
Everything just fell into place in this movie - the location filming and sets were gorgeous, the story was as good as it needed to be for a standalone movie, the CGI seemed better than usual and it worked as the perfect prologue to Gold Storm Sho. The only weak link was D Ringo still just kind of being *there*, but it feels more like Sho's fault for not expanding on him rather than him not working here. Just when Crimson Moon is watering down the franchise a little too much for me, this reminded me just how great Garo can be. |
UltraMan Cosmos Episode 6: This was a fantastic episode, mainly to learn about Doigoki who is a really fun supporting character. I like that he made progress and was successful with his plan and learned how to fly the plane better. I think his Dad is a bitter old man though lol. This was fun with the whole cast being together. Musashi was great just being supportive of Doigoki and helping him believe in himself. That was a fun fight with Cosmos and I just enjoy how he pacifies the monsters instead of destroying them, still one of my favorite parts of the show. Well I can't wait for more of the Compassionate Warrior.

Space Sheriff Gavan Episode 1: I am on a bit of a mini break while I figure out shows, so I'm going to catch up with Gavan and watch it as it comes out from MFC. Well it's definitely good to be watching Kenji Ohba again, I loved him as Battle Kenya in Battle Fever J. He kicks ass again just like he did in Battle Fever. He moves like lightning as Gavan. I definitely want to see more of Retsu and how he adapts to life on Earth as he protects them from the Makuu. Well I like the good guy and want the bad guys to be defeated so, so far pretty good right now. A solid first episode definitely felt like the Sentai and the Riders I've watched from the era. Right now Kenji Ohba, awesome action, and a giant Space Dragon has me sold on this show. I can't wait for more.
