Fiveman episode 1. I enjoy Fiveman. It's just deliciously absurd. Really, the name Fiveman doesn't do this absurdity justice. A better name would be "Space Sibling Teacher Alien Fighters!" |

The Dekarangers's power comes from a source that, for all intents and purposes, should be entirely replicable (If even possible to be lost in the first place). |
More Deka!
I got the the Hoji episode I was told was really good. Yeah, it was really good. Pretty enjoyable, especially considering the episodes surrounding it. It was reminiscent of watching Geki and after a really intense episode it shifted to the Christmas one as sort of a breather. Anyway, that was the episode needed to clinch Hoji as better than Sky, because they were pretty neck and neck otherwise. Also, I noticed they have a tendency to tack things on during judgment. I know that these are criminals and horrible people (Aliens) in general, but it gets a tad ridiculous when a villain who's a general thief, during judgment, will all of a sudden be revealed to have murdered a hundred people. |

Meanwhile, I'm up to Gekiranger 15 (I'm really only managing about an episode a day, sadly). It was... weird. The kid who played Jan, though? Totally the same kid who played AU Wataru in Decade. |
Deka 48.
Abrella is finally taking his stand. It's getting pretty good. And you reached that episode of Geki? It's really silly, but I still stand that the Geki Christmas episode is even more :lol Also, I find it funny that, when I hit the Deka Christmas episode, I was preparing for a stupid episode, but as it turned out, I was bracing myself for the wrong episode. The New Years episode that aired after it was the dumb one :lol |
And with that, Dekaranger is done. While I still have the movie and Vs. Abaranger to watch, I'll get to them a bit later.
I must say, it's certainly a fun series. The characters were great and it did well to capture the feel that these are cops working to save humanity, not superheroes who do it as a side job. There we some fundamental flaws, notably the execution of criminals vs. imprisonment (And no, I'm not starting this moral debate, don't worry. I'm just saying that it's a flaw against the series). Other issues are the characterization of our cast. They do grow, but it's pretty minute. Hoji's episode was one of the best episodes in Sentai, but ultimately, he had no actual change or growth occur from it, thus, technically, making it filler. It's amazingly written and emotional, but filler nonetheless. The show wanted to stick so closely to status quo that they didn't want the characters to experience any form of shift, which was a problem. As for the villains, I'm not a fan. There was a monster of the week here or there that had a neat backstory and history, but they were all just bland, for the most part. I also noticed that they had an odd tendency to add on crimes to make you lose any sense of sympathy for the character getting executed. It's rather jarring for a character who was solely a thief throughout the episode to have two hundred murders under his belt revealed during Judgment Time. Abrella was interesting, but ultimately, he wasn't any different. Who was originally a weapons smuggler who was angry over the Dekarangers foiling his transactions, was then revealed to be a mass murder across galaxies, and his endgame plan was to basically make Earth a hive of scum and villainy, turning him from a new concept back to the same tired space conqueror type villain. He didn't have a death ship, but his plan was that he'd be at the top to make all the money. His concept was different, but his goals pretty much put him on the same stage as SPD's Grumm. Speaking of SPD, the inevitable comparison comes, "Which was better?" Den-O says that compared to Deka, SPD is "Literally nothing." He is wrong. Deka is good, and I'll say that it's better than SPD, but the moral flaws of Dekaranger leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not just the execution of the MOTW, but the crimes the monsters committed as well, having mass murder lists that would make <Insert murderer's name here> blush. I know I'm thinking too deeply, and they're ultimately just numbers to make the monsters seem more evil so you don't have any doubt in your mind that they're horrible people (Aliens), but for each number, there's one family member we don't see. There's one planet that's completely gone, because of these characters. It's an effective way to prove to the viewer that there is no redeeming these characters, but it's a deplorable way of doing so. |
Moral flaws just don't really play into how I enjoy a series. The framework that the show works within is what it is. So I enjoy it that way.
And I'm always of the opinion that any sentai is better than it's Power Rangers counterpart. From a quality stand point the original is always better than the adaptation. And while SPD is easily my favorite of the Diseny era seasons it just doesn't hold a candle to Dekaranger. But that's just my personal opinion as well. |
So I just spent the evening watching the first 8 episodes to Jetman. The last time I watched this show was in 2004, in piss poor 2MB/Ep quality, and raw with every other episode having its audio out of synch. As such, I don't really remember too much about the show's basics, just the important events that happen, so it feels like I am watching most of this for the first time. Nevertheless, it is pretty enjoyable, but there are some issues I do have with it, which seem to be stand out even worse now seeing it sub.
The first episode feels extremely rushed, but it is the fourth episode that I would say was the worst of the bunch in tonight's viewing. One minute Kaori is happy, then she is sad, then she meets her fiancee, tells him she wants to continue being a ranger, then tells the others she is going to marry him, they go off into battle and somehow Kaori and her fiancee are getting married? How is that even possible? Were the rangers fighting Road Dimension for days? How did they get a church, get the dresses, and a priest all within minutes? It just doesn't make sense. Anyway, outside of that, I have enjoyed the series quite a bit thus far, even more so than previously. I will stand on my thoughts from years ago that this show has some of the weakest MOTW designs I have ever seen. I love the designs of the Vyram commanders (especially Ridiguet and Grey), but their monsters look extremely lackluster. With that said, I'll probably watch another batch of episodes tomorrow, but we'll see. The snow storm from Sunday has got me in the mood to watch The Shining. |

But Deka...Eh. Like I said, it didn't bring the series down, and I still enjoyed it over SPD, it just left a bad taste in my mouth, is all. And I'm not actually on that opinion, strangely. I want to give both series a fair chance. I'm not going to start running around calling Megaranger better than In Space by sheer virtue of being the source material. While yes, I will call some Sentai better than their PR adaptation simply because the PR adaptation sucked, I do like to give them a fair chance. Anyway, overall, Deka is better than SPD, but it's not that good :lol Oh, and is there any point in time where the entire Dekaranger team is gathered? And don't say Gokaiger, because DekaGold, DekaBright, DekaMaster, and DekaSwan weren't there. |
So far there's only been a handful of Power Rangers series I've preferred over their Sentai counterpart. Those being MMPR and RPM (although comparing that with Go-Onger is difficult since they're so different). I can't really comment on Megaranger vs In Space since I'm holding out on it until someone finishes subbing it.
|
See I just can't get past the terrible american acting anymore. When I was a kid I obviously didn't care. But now? I just can't stomach it when compared to the original Japanese version. MMPR would probably be the only series I'd enjoy more than it's source and that's only because Zyuranger (from what I understand) is rather boring.
Also I'd have to say RPM Vs. Go-Onger isn't a fair comparison since RPM went a completely different direction. The only similarities they had were costumes by the end of it. |

I started watching Hurricanger last night just for fun. Now that I'm going through it for my second time through, it's actually kinda of nice to now be able to look at it and to a degree analyze it knowing what's going to happen, where as before I didn't know jack outside of the Gouraigers story.

I am now watching Gokaiger on Youtube just for the heck of it and out of boredom. I'm really enjoying the series so far and I'm just starting on its fourth episode.

If I can include series that I haven't finished, but I'm watching as it's subbed, then after Kakuranger. Geki (Kaku) Deka Gosei (Kyoryu) (Shinken) (Bouken) Gokai (Sun Vulcan) *Series in parenthesis are unfinished and subject to change. |
Well I watched episodes 9-16 of Jetman a little while ago. First off, let me get this out of the way, what the **** is up with the sobo noodles episode? I already knew it was coming, but this episode is one of the worst episodes in the entire history of Sentai. There have been bad episodes, bad moments, bad series, but this episode is right up there with the Live Green pregnancy episode in my "WTF Were They Thinking?" category. If I show this series to my friends I will definitely not ever let them watch this or they may never want to watch another episode of Jetman after it.
With that out of the way, the two parter with Camera Dimension were down right awesome. This is a very rare occasion to have a series where a character just comes out and says they love another character to that person. Forget the epic lunch Kaoru and Kouga plan to have after the Garo movie, this is something truly unexpected from a Japanese show. However, am I the only one that finds it weird that they are celebrating Ryu's 26th birthday when a few episodes prior Ryu's grandma said he was 27? That just strikes me as odd. Did GUIS mess up their translation in one of these episodes? Anyway, the episode where Ako's friend finds out she is a ranger was really good too. The episode after, with the paper monster, was average, especially given the last several episodes prior to it. I also did like the episode with the killer bus that came before the two parter. Grey is a pretty cool villain and becoming my favorite of the bunch. Overall, Jetman is pretty good, but I still cannot see how people think it is the greatest series ever. Yeah, some people said that to me about DaiRanger, but still. Jetman is good, but I'd say it is equal to ZyuRanger. |
Akibaranger Ep 6
Heh heh, awesomeness with the suit actor for Red Hawk. And then, holy crap, Malshina! Ep 7 Malshina and Corporate Drones in the commercial bumpers? Awesome! This show is amazing, why didn't I finish watching it last year? |

They might have more character development, but the MOTW and mech battles are pretty lackluster. Jetman fails on that level whereas ZyuRanger succeeded in it. As such, both are on the same level as both have the same number of terrible episodes in its first 16 episodes.

But then, mech fights isn't Jetman's strong point. What makes Jetman one of the most beloved Sentai shows of all time is the story and characters - both the heroes and the villains. It's a bit of a slow build, but around the time the Vyram Empress shows up you should start seeing some real awesomeness. |
Neat. Went to go get Dairanger and saw that a new episode (And movie) Of Kakuranger had been subbed.

Also, I hope you enjoy Dairanger. Definitely a good series in my opinion. |
Kakuranger "The Movie":
"The Movies" are normally forgettable filler episodes slapped onto the big screen along with 1-2 other toku "movies." Kakuranger is exactly that, except not forgettable because Kakuranger's filler episodes are great fun. This has a lot of wacky ninpo in it. I'd even say they power spam them. There's a point where Sasuke turns into a functioning fire extinguisher (Thank god the white stuff came ut of his mouth!). This is followed by Seikai, Saizou, and Jiraiya turning into power tools and Sasuke plugging Jiraiya into his nose. Everything else is pretty standard fare, but that scene alone is worth a watch. :lol PS The triple feature was Kakuranger, Kamen Rider J, and Blue SWAT. This means the full triple feature is subbed now. |

"The Movie" series is part of a theatrical double or triple feature (and in one case, a quadruple feature) and has no crossover. They are normally the same length as an episode. Examples: "Shinkenger the Movie: The Fateful War," "Goseiger: Epic on the Movie," "Gokaiger the Movie: The Flying Ghost Ship," "Go-Busters the Movie: Protect the Tokyo Enetower!" All of these examples were shown in a double feature with a Kamen Rider movie. "The Movie" series is rather lackluster save for a few good ones while the VS series tends to have a much better track record. |
For the Sentai movies, the only really good one is Abar Ranger AbareSummer Deluxe. Usually, the Sentai movies ranger from enjoyable to horrible. The problem is, a lot of them are rushed to being 30 minutes while the Kamen Rider movies are way too long. Instead of doing a 30 minute Sentai movie and a 75-90 minute Kamen Rider movie, they need to just make them both 50 minutes a piece and stop dragging the Rider movies out to unbearable boredom. Outside of Episode Final, I cannot think of one movie that benefited from the Director's Cut because even though the DC adds a really important to the plot scene, it adds like 8 minutes of crap.
As for the Vs movies, OhRanger vs KakuRanger is still the best, followed by GaoRanger vs Super Sentai, but there are some good ones sprinkled throughout. The Go-Onger vs GekiRanger one was pretty good two, and probably the last good one. Unless you count the 199 Heroes movie as a VS movie, then that one is the best. |
I don't really know if I have a favourite summer movie, since they when you watch a series in one go they tend to get forgotten amongst the episodes themselves :lol
I'd probably say Geki's is my favourite, although I enjoyed the Dekaranger and Go-Onger ones. Gao's isn't bad either. As for vs. movies (not couting 199 Heroes since it isn't technically a vs film), like Sentai said Shinkenger vs Goseiger is most certainly my favourite. Hurricanger vs Gaoranger is really good too. I found both the Gaoranger and Boukenger "vs Super Sentai" films to be massively underwhelming. |
As a huge fan of both Boukenger and Gaoranger I can say with certainty that their VS Super Sentai films were bland as hell. There were some good moments but thats all.
And if we're talking best VS movie then it would have to be Goseiger/Shinkenger. I hated Shinkenger and that movie somehow made those characters enjoyable. |
For "The Movie" series, Geki wins my seal of approval (Big shock).
Also, 199 Heroes was the Gokai Gosei crossover, was it not? It doesn't have a huge "VS" stamped on it, but it's still their Vs. movie. It's like saying "Magnum Force" isn't a Dirty Harry movie just because it's not called "Dirty Harry: Magnum Force." |
Its not counted within the vs series though, and is treated as its own anniversary thing. Vs Gavan was the "vs series" film for that year.

I decided to watch Dairanger for the first time. And once again, I'm writing this as I watch episode One.
Starting with the opening I loved it. I just wish they'd have used alot of this footage with Season 2 of MMPR, all it would've taken is a suit change. I know they were still building a brand kind-of, but Saban would've made a killing with people wanting to buy the new suits. I would've bought'm. A tentacle pulled a little girl into a hole and knocked off her backpack and shoes.. If I didn't know I was in Japan before I sure as hell do now. And that is one creepy singing, yoyo playing, kid.. Motorcycles! Something else I wish they'd ahave used.. Did they use them? I can't remember season 2 having bikes. Did they have bikes? Not sure what to think of Kaku yet. The other Dairangers seem cool though, even if Ryuu is easily confused. And if these Sentai Teams all exist in the same world; Why doesn't one team tell the others when an ancient evil may arise?! "So, 6000 years ago there were these Gouma.. Yea, they might come back. So." Generate your Ki... Believe.. Is Kaku Naruto's grandfather or something? Or Goku... Grandpa Gohan! Really glad they didn't use the weird Tuxedo troops though. Lord Zedd was so much cooler, and his Putties actually looked like a threat. These guys... They look about as threatening as Shin-Chan's mom. Baron String.. Did Lord Zedd ever make him? He looks very familiar. .. Um. Why did we need that trippy floating box-explosion just to summon a dragon? Dragon Ranger did it and all he needed was a damned flute! So.. Yea. I take back what I said. This show makes no sense, and I don't think they should've used it. Saban so made the right decision.. Seriously, wtf did I just watch?! |
Go-On Vs. Geki was one of the first Toku anything I've ever seen, and I still love it after re-watching it recently.
Shinken Vs. Go-On is pretty funny, I like it. Bouken Vs. Super Sentai is pretty good. I think it was the first Toku anything I've seen, but I honestly can't remember. :lol And of course 199 Heroes is great and epic. Really, the only Vs. movie I didn't like was Gaoranger Vs. Super Sentai. It was okay, but it would've been a lot better if they didn't pad it out with the past warriors fawning over the last 20-something Sentai. Quote:
