I finally ditched the CFL bulbs and switched to LED's. I changed the white balance setting on my camera and messed with the position of the lights to minimize glare.

Have you tried using a circular polarizing filter to reduce glare? I haven't done much with toy photos and my new camera yet, but they can make a difference in outdoor photography in reducing glare. Maybe they can help with studio photography too?

I honestly never even thought about using any kind of filter.
