My current plate of Sentai reviewing.
Kakuranger Gekiranger Re watch of Gokaiger Dairanger Yeah, I should learn to pace myself :lol |
I'm now on Gokaigers' 17th episode which introduces Gai Ikari aka GokaiSilver who is the sixth ranger of this series. I honestly thought I might have some form of dislike towards him in his first appearance but he is actually very entertaining and likable. The 35th anniversary movie that takes place before it is seriously awesome and most of the stuff that takes place even before that is awesome from the ranger suits, the mecha, the uses of the powers from the previous Super Sentai, the rangers themselves, and yes even most of that series' villains are pretty awesome in their own way.
All in all, I really do get why a lot of people love this particular Super Sentai series and is considered one of its best ones among most fans. I really hope that the suits and the mecha get used at some point once Power Rangers: MegaForce reaches to its second season. I know this is premature since I haven't even come close to finishing this series but Gokaiger is now officially tied with Dairanger as my favorite Super Sentai series with Zyuranger and maybe Kakuranger as honorary mentions. |

*Don.
Gai is a close second, though. |

4 episodes into Dekaranger. I got a big kick out of Sen-chan doing a handstand for his thinking pose. I instantly remembered Bridge on s.p.d.doing that a few times.
Ban is super awesome. Apparently between him and Jan from Gekiranger. I prefer my Reds on the obnoxious side. |

Oh, and I was mistaken. I was on Dairanger 4, not 5. |

And unless I just pick damn good Sentai to watch, she's on par with VulShark in terms of characterization. |

I also like my reds to look like leaders, such as Ryo (Dai), Matoi (GoGoV), and Marvelous (Gokai) as opposed to being kids like Kai (Magi) and Alata (Gosei). |

Why don't we get more creative names for rangers anymore? It's all [Series][Color] for naming conventions, (Though Gobusters did a slight change up).
Sun Vulcan gave us "VulEagle, VulPanther, and VulShark", Zyuranger gave us "TyrannoRanger, DragonRanger, TigerRanger, etc", Why have we forgone naming like that for what we use now? |

Joe didn't have much of one either, come to think of it. Quote:

And actually, Carranger (US Turbo) had different naming conventions, with stuff like Red Racerm, Pink Racer, and etc. (Though KabutoRaiger, KuwagaRaiger, and Shurikenger from Hurricanger had different naming, Red, Blue, and Yellow play it straight). |

So I'm just going through my Sentai files and for some reason, half of Nihon's files will not play on my tv. The first 20 episodes of MegaRanger claim the files are not supported, I get no audio in the first 32 episodes of GekiRanger, and the video quality to TimeRanger looks like total ****, especially when I compare it to Over-Time's subs. I do not have the patience to go through every episode, let alone every series, but it really frustrates me.
Is there any way to fix this without having to spend 40 years muxing every episode? |

As for other series without alternate subs, I really don't know... Anyway, I was thinking, you know what'd be fun for a Super Hero Taisen? Where the monsters win and the heroes lose their powers, so to combat them, they get cards/keys of their enemies and transform into them. The Gokaigers could transform into the Zangyack leads, the Kyoryugers could turn into the Deboss Army, etc etc. |

If I remember correctly, the way Valentine's Day in Japan works is that girls give chocolate presents to guys they like. There's a corresponding day - White Day? - where guys return the favor.
At least that's what I remember from the great guidebook to Japanese culture that is Love Hina. |

So I've watched episodes 27-33 of Jetman thus far today and they have all been quite good. The three parter with the demons was pretty awesome and the show definitely has some of the best character development from a Sentai series (well, at least for Ryu, Gai, and Kaori, as Raita and Ako are being left in the dust as usual).
Oh, I do need to mention one thing though, and this is a trend all series seem to follow. So episode 27 had the rangers "dying." Ako was first, then Gai, and then Raita. The priest says the spirit will permanently separate from the body after an hour. Why is it always conveniently a time limit from the last person affected? Shouldn't that mean Ako was dead dead since her spirit was taken long before those belonging to Gai and Raita? Anyway, one other thing I noticed, the Wing Gauntlet wings are the color of the ranger, and yet, the Figuarts Black Condor still had red wings for his gauntlet. What gives? Quote:

Yeah, it took me 2 days to finish downloading them, but it would be a tad simpler to see if you can get their subs to play before you start toying around with the individual files.

Besides that, has anyone other than Nihon subbed all of Boukenger? I've got a sub set of Go-Onger from someone called go anon that is 85% complete, and they used the DVDs for their source instead of tv rips. In the meantime, I just finished episode 41 of Jetman. The last batch of episodes I have watched have been really excellent, but again, Raita and Ako seem to be left in the outfield. Nevertheless, it was nice to finally see Hirose's face again once Tran did his transformation, but oddly enough, I could have sworn this happened a lot sooner in the series than it did now. I still get a laugh that Geki's actor is the head of the Neo-Jetman while Dan's actor was one of the Back Dimension bird people from earlier as well. On the negative side, I do need to point out that Kaori's actor is pretty poor when it comes to acting skills. She tries way too hard when it comes to her crying scenes and they just feel forced. Other than that, only 10 episodes to go. |

So I watched 42-45 earlier and I have to say that I felt quite bored by Tranza's demon mech. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood to watch the episodes, or maybe it was the lack of music through half of the fights, but I just sat there wonder how much longer the episodes had to go. There were some really great moments, but overall, it wasn't that good.
EDIT: Well I just finished Jetman, so I'm going to post my final thoughts on the show, but in doing so, there will be spoilers, so only read on if you don't care or have already seen the show. First, the tomato episode, which was pretty bad. It wasn't down right awful, but what is up with Raita and Ako having the weirdest filler episodes out of the entire series? Sure, Gai had that vaccuum cleaner monster, but those two specifically seem to get the short end of the stick when it came to episode plots. Moving on, I really liked the way they finished off Tranza first, but I find the editing weird of how he is forced to call Radiguet lord and then in the next scene he is suddenly in a mental institution. Did the rangers put him there? Did someone fine him? Did Radiguet have him delivered there? It just doesn't make sense. And how did he have a mental breakdown to where he completely forgot who he is. The lack of an explanation doesn't work for me, but I do think it was a fitting end. I'm actually surprised Toei didn't do anything with this maybe during Gokaiger and have Tranza wake up after all of these years. I definitely felt Maria's finale episodes were well done and she went out on a high note, and I liked how her stabbing Radiguet had consequences against him in the final battle. I do feel the final role call should have occurred in the final episode and had been a few seconds longer. However, my biggest gripe comes from the ending itself. This has always bothered me, as Ryu wants nothing to do with Kaori, he is fixated on Rie the entire series, wants her to go out with Gai. Rie dies and then Ryu suddenly has feelings for Kaori, leaving Gai behind. Now, I will say that I never noticed the wedding was actually 3 years later, so that was nice, as it means it gave Ryu and Kaori to develop their relationship, but it feels lackluster that the moments before the wedding played it off as if Gai was going to get married to her, only to see Ryu at the altar. Finally, what the hell is wrong with Gai at the end? He gets stabbed, but instead of going to the hospital, he decides to ruin everyone's day by going to meet Ryu and them and die on them, so that their wedding anniversary is going to be remembered as the day Gai died. That is pretty jacked up. But then, it is Gai, who was, and always will be, an ahole, so that is probably why he went, to ruin the moment forever. Overall, Jetman was a very well done show. I loved how much it focused on developing its characters, even if some of them were given lackluster episodes to be developed with. The villains were pretty interesting, and I do like the development they were given, but not everything worked well with the show. The majority of the Monsters of the Week left a lot to be desired and the mech battles were pretty bland outside of a few instances. I still don't really know what the purpose of Tetra Boy was, as he hardly did anything. Couldn't they have just gotten Jet Icarus his own cannon instead? For the rangers, I do have to say that Gai was the best character out of the show, as he had the most growth throughout the show. It took him nearly 30 episodes before he finally felt like he was a team member, and even then, his character still grew. As I said above, I do have issues with his actions at the very end of the show, but whatever. For Vyram, Grey has go to be my favorite of the group and his battles against Black Condor were excellent. Again, I loved how all of them had development, but I felt there was not enough to justify Tran's actions. It seemed to come out of left field his mental pain of being a child. This is something that should have been fleshed out more because his transformation just felt like a child having a temper tantrum for not getting his way instead of having prior build up. As such, even though Tranza is played by my favorite Sentai actor, I felt more could have been done with his character (what is up with his hair though?). Maria was fleshed out really nicely, so I have nothing to say, but they should have done a lot more with Radiguet when he was turned into a human. With that said, I'd definitely rank Jetman in my Top 10 Sentai series, but it would probably be between the 6-10 rankings. A great show that I think even non-Sentai fans would enjoy, especially anime fans who like character development, so I can see why it is consider a favorite amongst many fans. Great show. WIth that said, now I'm deciding what series I want to watch next. Maybe I'll attempt Goseiger again because of Megaforce, especially since Maskman is far from being completed. |
After devoting myself to KR for awhile I've decided to re-watch Bioman. It was the very first Super Sentai I watched as a kid, and after more than a decade I want to see how different it will be for me watching it as an adult.
Finished the first three episodes and man what a walk down memory lane it is for me. I remember my childhood again after watching this. The first episode was the gathering of the team. I like that the Bio Robo just picked everyone up. Mason was the first oponent. Episode 2 had Yellow not wanting to be part of the team and had to be convinced to join. I liked that Bioman was different from other shows that they don't have MOTW but 5 monsters that the Neo Empire just rotate in using. Episode 3 had them almost losing the Bio Robo. And I'm relieved to find that the English Dub doesn't bother me. I thought I'd find it too cheesy but I guess not. |
I'm up through episode 21 of Gekiranger, the KaGeki arc. The first activation of the Super Geki modes was full of damn near every heroic comeback cliche ever, but it still really worked for me and it was hard not to cheer out loud when Jan first powered up. I'm really liking Geki Fire, too, although I still think Geki Penguin is ridiculous.
