I caved and picked up both Zenkaiger Minipla sets. The combined robot forms just look so good, especially with the little stands they come with.

And then I spent the last 2 hours researching how I plan to paint them.

I think I'll be able to resist the Crocodaioh but I love the tiny SD-like companion robots that are part of that set.

Hmm, would be tempted to pick this one up just for the Shinkenger reference. Haha. I also put together Zenkaioh Juragaon today and his combined form with all the extra parts makes it pretty good:

The separate modes are definitely the weakest parts but I mostly got this for the combined mode anyways. I have the Vroomagine set on the way but won't be here for a few months because I surface parcel was the more reasonable option.

So FedEx lost my package- or they say it's delivered but I never received it. It could have been stolen from my apartment lobby

It contained both the Zenkaiger Minipla sets 01 and 02. Big bummer but here is where my mind is at now.

If I just call it a loss I am out the cash and the Minipla kits.

I order them again and the grand total for the lost set and the new set is about 20% higher than if I paid for them through a place like Tokullectibles. This is only possible because each set is extremely cheap in Japan right now, about $15 for each. So I still end up overpaying but at least I still get the models?

Is that logical or should I just cut my losses?

I have seen info for a set 5 released in november (4 boxes for a set). there was no real info if it will available as a set (set 4 was not so I don't think it will for this one too)

This it was in fact stolen or at least delivered to the wrong address and the person kept it.

I found the whole box's contents on eBay. You can tell it was my package because the person left the Zenmarket identifying sticker on one of the items and it matches exactly with my code. And the seller's location is also in the same state.

GaoLion - silver teeth
GaoEagle - Silver on the chest to match DX toy, white line on GaoKing helmet (this was a pain to paint!)
GaoShark - Paint in place of all silver stickers, gold on gills, silver on small area "behind" gills, silver teeth
GaoBison - gold on side emblems (replacing stickers). Silver paint on the part the wheels attach to to match DX toy
GaoTiger - all black stickers were painfully painted! Metallic pink on top stripes.

Yessir, and transformation is a little nuanced too. It's all stuff you get over in the end, but I was surprised at how much it confused me even as a seasoned builder.

I think I like Juragaon more for the symmetry and Vroomagine is a bit more busy/messy but still pretty cool.

Thoughts: The Bioman robo is classic blocky sentai and the kit doesn't disappoint in the looks department. It is simple design and the accessories are nice and minimal. For people who can only dream of ever owning the original DX toy, the Mini-Pla is an excellent stand in. But I might still caution those who aren't experienced with model kits.

The fully assembled kit is great, with really good transformation. But the build process was perhaps more laborious than any other mini-pla kit I've done. Strangely, I had some pieces that didn't fit flush and I had to do a bit of sanding and remolding to get it right. And I can't even tell if it was just a particular bad mold- from my experience, it actually looks like just a bad fitting piece and all kits will be like this.

Worse yet are the stickers. I actually like the retro look of most of them, but the problem is they don't fit as perfect as you might be used to. Stickers kind of run off the edge ever so much, which means when you handle the model the stickers will peel and whiten. A lot of these stickers it would be very hard to replace with paint; at least with my typical techniques.

On the bright side, you only build 2 things here. Which was a nice break from the 5 robots found in modern sentai. I especially like the clear cockpits. Though you'll never be able to see it, I even painted the little pilots inside.

The other small nitpicks: Bioman Robo is back-heavy and will fall backwards often. The shield fits very loose in the hand. Lastly, the shield was a pain to paint, I should've just used the sticker.

But come on! Look at this thing. Looks like a vintage toy that sprang to life!

The bottom set of wheels are painted. The top are not. I'm not kidding when I say Gundam markers are a perfect color match!

I really want to get into minipla, but I worry about painting.

Painting is completely optional. The stickers are good, and even I still use some. If you can do SO-DO, Minipla is just a hair more.

I will give it a shot then, but what mech to get hmmm.
