Ok...something I forgot to mention about Kiva TV Nihon keeps switching from typing it "Fangaia" to the proper way "Fangire" it just kinda bothers me.
|
I can't stand TV Nihon's subs. The entire reason I watch it subtitled is so I can see what they're seeing in English. If 30% is left untranslated, and everything has those distracting honourifics left on, though, it's not really doing it's job well.

See I honestly prefer TVN traslations myself. OT is just way to casual and interpretive of the dialogue for my tastes. More often than not I feel that the words TVN leaves untranslated don't have a proper corresponding english term that I'd rather read. And I dig the honorifics :p
But that's just my personal preference as well. To each their own. |

I'd be kinda bothered by TVN's subs if we had to pay for them, and they were the only subs available or they were completely in romaji, or something along those lines, but there are just so many other options for current stuff that I can't see why people dedicate the effort to cursing them so. Maybe it's the fact that a lot of the books that I read are translated from different languages or the English is so varied that it practically is a different language from the one I speak, but I just can't get bothered by little words staying in place here and there. In fact, I've kinda grown to like them. It gives a nice little flair to the dialog, especially if it's otherwise dry.

It's really the little things about TVN's subs that turn some people away, like assuming casual views know what [Name]-Nii-san or what the -dono honorific mean, or leaving monster names untranslated, giving us what blink and you'll miss it translation notes (Like during Gosei).
|
Names are one thing that I dont think should ever be translated. Whether it be monsters, rangers, mechas, weapons. A name is a name. I dont need to hear them speak their name and then have it translated into whatever in the subs.

I really don't want to get into arguing about fansubs again, but I will say this: I'm currently watching TVN's subs of Boukenger and do you know what is pissing me off a lot about them? That stupid splash image at the start of the video that makes the audio out of synch. You've already got your team name splashed over the title card, guys, you don't need the vanity image, too.

It just comes down to "what is easiest to understand" and half-translated sentences with honourifics, the meaning of which are completely lost on me as a non-Japanese speaker, does not make it easy to understand while I'm watching the action. Quote:

Yeah, I don't know if I'd go that far. I can't stand them myself, that's about it.

Finished episode 43 of Agito last night. Things are really starting to heat up! Looking forward to see how everything wraps up! Definitely one of my favorite Kamen Rider series so far!

I'm not talking about taking portions of the name and translating it, but when the characters' naming scheme is [Character name] The [Noun/Verb], it's the second part that I feel is needlessly kept untranslated. Anyway, I prefer OT and GUIS subs, and someone needs to tell TVN that the point of including the fancy karaoke is, you know, for karaoke, so having the upcoming words upside down and backwords kinds defeats the purpose. |
Finished watching Kiva today. Started watching it basically because the base version of Kiva is one of my favourite toku suit designs ever and the horror theme was a hook as well. I quite enjoyed it, even if the two different time periods was a bit difficult to juggle at first.
Wataru was a fun character--in over his head frequently and pretty much entirely the opposite of his father. Balancing the two meant Wataru didn't get Shinji Ikari levels of insufferable (well, to me, anyways) and Wataru actually pulled out of his tailspin and did some good. I quite enjoyed it. No idea which series I'll watch next, tho. :) |

I can understand where it's difficult for people too. TVN did not do a good job by any stretch of the word when it came to translating a lot of the individual phrases from Gekiranger. The viewer is just kind of expected to figure them out over time. I guess it just bothers some people a whole lot more than others. |
There's nothing wrong with TV-Nihon. I love how they sub! ... haters.
|
I prefer OT to TV-N, but TV-N is still fine. It might just be I've accepted the fact that there aren't many options when it comes to 00's shows.
As for translating names, I agree that they should stay the same. Although I do find it hilarious that OT translated part of Go-Buster King back into Japanese. |

Kiva episode 4.
Spoiler tags...activaaaate... I didn't know that those guys in the suits in Castle Doran are Garuru, Bashaa, and Dogga! That's cool! Garuru Form is cool too (despite it only changing his left arm, chestplate, and eye color) so...is it like Den-O where they posses him? Or is it more like New Den-O where they're just the weapon? Anyway it was nice to see hints of what happens in Decade where Fangires and Humans live together in peace (relatively), and to see hints that Fangires aen't entirely evil. So...what happens to humans who have their life force drained? Does it come back when said Fangire blow up? Or do they say dead? |
Hey I started watching Kiva too. Just watched the first episode, loved it! Surprised more people don't talk about it. The characters are a lot of fun right off the bat, the two timelines thing is interesting as hell, and there's so much weird/wacky stuff in this I can't help but be intrigued(what WAS that Dragon-building thing?!).

Just watched the Begins Night movie, glad to see Skull in action and it definitely explained things a bit. I've yet to watch Decade so I skipped his section from the start and got..a tad confused once the crossover section began.

Travel to different worlds, Tsukasa's haircut, Onore, Diend, Apollo Geist. There. "But that's not a full sentence." That's because Decade never finishes it's attempt at a story. It just does little story arcs for the character of the week, and that's it. No overarching story whatsoever. |
I like that the big bad bird/bug/worm thing is brought down by double controlling a giant robot elephant in Movie 2010.
I was all like whaaat the fuckhahahaha |

I seriously need to put a break on Sentai watching to get to watching Kuuga. Every time I prepare to watch it I download another Sentai series, get disappointed in said Sentai not being Geki, and forget to watch another show :lol

So...does anyone know of a free file converter that can convert files to an mp4? I was using Prism so that I could convert the episodes of Kiva from avis to mp4s and my phone can't play avis, and the free version of Prism won't convert to mp4s. (That, and I don't think $50 is worth it for a file converter)
