Agreed. A safe bet is to always let the lady pick; this serves two purposes. First off it demonstrates that you are taking an interest in what she wants to do or is interested in. Secondly it also gives you some insight; if you say please pick a movie and she says "Pacific Rim" it gives you a different insight than if she said "Grown Ups 2."

Yeah you might get stuck watching something you hate, but you grin and bear it and MAN UP because let me tell you, taking a lady to a movie she doesn't like on an early date has worse ramifications. If she had a good time with you at the first movie, she'll more than likely let you pick the next one (which can be a thorny road but you knew that, right?)

If she suggests Grown Ups 2, you turn around and walk off right there and then. You just dodged a bullet my friend.

It's a nice little Japanese movie about a man who in his old lonely age, holds a fake audition to find the woman of his dreams. He does just that, and they start dating and become close and in love....

....and then she drugs/paralyzes him, cuts his foot off, and sticks needles in his chest and eyes after killing his dog. His son comes home and knocks the girl down the stairs, breaking her neck.

It's really, really, really good movie. Just not a good choice for date night.
