I like the basic design concept (basicaly robo ET) and I quite like the silouet, but the detailing is way too busy and random and that kind of ruins it for me. I'm torn on the eyestalks.
In terms of personality and character it's way too early for me to say. Just as a design itself the origonal Alpha 5 doesn't have much character to me at least, certainly not more than this design. It's the way he moves and talks that gives him character. Though I'm not terribly confident about how the new one will look in motion. But I'll wait and see. |

In fact, my mother (someone who has never shown even the slightest interest in Power Rangers) saw the first trailer and is actually anticipating this movie a lot more than she thought she ever would. She told me that "it looks like a real movie, instead of just a bunch of guys in silly costumes shouting cheesy catchphrases," so obviously what's being shown here is clicking with a wider audience than you might think. |

Ofcourse it is it's regurgitating every popular Hollywood movie from the last decade that's how they're hoping to sucker people into seeing it. |

Why make a Power Rangers movie for Power Rangers fans? What would they care? Quote:
Would making the costumes less alien and more reflective of their animal motifs really alienate audiences? Would making the zords actually look like robotic animals really alienate fans? Would making Alpha look more like a robot and less like a night terror really alienate audiences? Would havine a ligther tone akin to GotG really alienate audiences? You act like appealing to fans and the masses are mutually exclusive concepts, but they're not. They could've easily made a movie more in line with PR whilst still makign it consumer friendly. Hell, maybe they could'e actually attempted to update and inform the public's perception of Power Rangers at it's best rather than callously and cynically alter it it with an extreme in the opposite direction. This complacency with Hollywood tropes and trends kills me, and it kills cretaivity. Everyone's so God damned afraid of going against what's proven to work they won't bother seeing if anything else will. Except we know there's other ways to do it. Again, GotG proves that you can have a much, much more jovial tone and audiences fucking loved it. The excuse that the idiot masses can't accept anything different is not only conceptually flawed, it is proven to be incorrect. |
I totally agree with Den-O on everything.
This Alpha might as well just be called Wheelie 2.0. |
I still don't get the "lazy" complaints. Copying the original designs beat for beat would be the real lazy option. And seriously, this looks just like Alpha, minus, again, the stylistic changes made to fit into the aesthetic this universe is going for. It has the same colors, same iconic head designs (plus eyestalks anyways). Just the proportions are a bit different, and it's got the sleeker, more alien like design to it.

I'm in no way implying that their approach here is necessarily a good thing, or the right way to go about things either. I am ONLY arguing against the statement that it's an objectively unrecognizable, loose representation of Power Rangers, and a manipulative cash grab on the same level as Jem and the Holograms. |
I was looking forward to seeing the new Alpha design, but I have to say I'm not a fan. It's not terrible, but it barely looks like Alpha. Doesn't even have the lightning bolt on the chest (or does it?) :p
