Got my second Monsterarts today at my local comic shop (The first being Fire Rodan). They were having a sale & my birthday's coming soon and that's how I'm justifying it. Grabbed Burning Godzilla and I'm pretty happy with him. Would have liked some more articulation but I realize that's just the design. I do think they could have articulated the last 8 links of his tail though. The next one I grab will be either King Kong or Mogera

I got King Kong from AmiAmi yesterday. Awesome figure.
|
I saw Destoroyah in person at a local collectible shop the other day.
Almost cried manly tears at its beauty. Damn do I want that figure. Biollante a bit more, but I know that is one I'll never own. |
Bluefin Tamashii insider Derringer posted this little snippet on Toho Kingdom:
"Heh, I know you guys are waiting for an announcement of something, but as I mentioned to Poe on twitter, there's a quite a bit of things Tamashii wants to do across all of its lines, not just MonsterArts. And there can only be so many releases per month in a year. On that note, what do you guys think of Mecha King Ghidorah? (no this is not a hint, just a curious question)" What do you guys think? I'd be all over Mecha King Ghidorah as long the wing connectors are improved! |
I'd rather have Biollante first.

I'm thinking MKG would be a relatively easy (cost effective) release, as only certain parts would need to be retooled. I'd be curious if it would end up with some diecast metal parts like Mechagodzilla and Mogera.

I'm impressed by how good these two look together:

I've posted some extremely hi-res pics of Kiryu at my site: http://www.poeghostal.com/2013/06/am...rts-kiryu.html

Had some spare Amazon gift card money so I decided to grab Godzilla Jr. I think I like Burning G more but Jr is still a good figure. The detail is great and it's nice to have a mini(er) Godzilla, I just wish he had the same level of articulation as his dad. Will most likely grab King Kong or Little G next unless Mogera goes on sale at HLJ again.

Is Monster Arts King Kong worth buying? Since he's basically just a well articulated gorilla...

While I have mixed feelings on King Kong as a movie, I did like the design (it was only later, when I read other Kong materials, that I realized the 1933 Kong wasn't really supposed to be a true ape). And even if SHMA Kong was just a gorilla, I love gorillas, so getting a super-articulated gorilla is just as cool.

Plus he makes a much better "modern" compliment to the other two MonsterArts Heisei Godzillas. I'm not sure what else you could be looking for or expecting. http://www.thedaytimeninja.com/s-h-m...g-kong-review/ http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps9f906ab5.jpg |
OMG the Naomi Watts hand!
And it isn't so much 'what do I expect' but King Kong in the movies is a giant frickin gorilla hell yeah! But when you scale that down to figure size, I was just wondering what exactly sets him apart from other gorilla toys. I don't think extra heads really swings it for me. |
I'd say that articulation sets him apart, such as the fact you can pose him on all fours. There's loads of gorilla toys out there, but how many look good or are articulated like he is? The Playmates Kongs are all crappy, ugly AND overpriced on the secondary market now and the others that come to mind are vintage and therefore not so pretty (Big Jim gorilla), robits (Primals, that guy from Spawn), or are Mattel (Grodd/Mallah/Gygor).
That's not to say I'm endorsing Kong, I'm not rushing to buy him, but there isn't a glut of articulated gorilla toys out there keeping me away either. |
I probably will nab him in a sale but I don't see any real reason to pay full price for him.
|
He's pretty great, easily the best Kong toy out there imo. However the MezCo toys of the Jackson movie were pretty good. Not sure how much they go for on the after-market, I remember them being clearanced pretty heavily after the movie disappointed.
|
The movie disappointed? It made over a half a billion dollars!
I suppose kids weren't that into the toys, but it was the Playmates stuff that got clearanced. Mezco only made one 18" Kong that, to be fair, was awesome. I never saw it on clearance though. |
Disappointment relates to expectation and budget. They expected it to do better than it did. $207mil budget before prints and marketing(which were at least $75mil) needs a worldwide gross of $564mil(at least, more if the marketing cost more) to break even(because theaters take half). It had a worldwide gross of ~$550mil. It didn't hit profit until video.
So it wasn't a flop, and they didn't lose money, but studios don't spend $200mil+ on a movie with the expectation that it won't hit profit until home video. Hence 'disappointment.' You notice there hasn't been a sequel? Also I saw the MezCo stuff on clearance at Spencer's for a long time. |
I can't argue the funds but theatres take a lot less than half, they really are just a fast food joint that shows movies. That is why all the popcorn and dogs and stuff cost so much because that is where they make most of their money.

However the past half decade or so they switched back to 50/50 parity from the first weekend because the studios were front loading their releases and shortening the home video release window. The food and drink sales are significant and drive a lot of the profit but you could make the same argument with the studios and dvd/tv sales. As for the MezCo King Kong on clearance, I remember specifically it being on clearance because I heavily considered getting one. But then I figured I didn't have the room. I can still remember the Spencer's display with the clearance prices(it was $30). As for "one figure" I remember there being several variants. |
From doing a degree in Film.

I have a degree in Cinema/Television from USC myself, and worked in the industry for several years. Perhaps the split is different in the UK, although I doubt it.
EDIT: here's a recent article laying out the numbers: http://io9.com/5747305/how-much-mone...-be-profitable I only link it because I have had this argument before and the other person always links some blog from 2002 explaining the situation as it was then(and then only paying attention to the first week split), when it has changed since. |
The split can change from cinema to cinema.
|
Yes it can, and if you want to get technical perhaps the studios end up with 53% of the gross, or 49% or some other random number. But OVERALL it is roughly 50/50. Certainly not the scenario you painted in your first post on the subject.
|
I was always taught and informed that the cinemas get little from ticket sales and make most of the money from snacks.

I was actually rearranging/dusting my Monsterarts display, and decided to take some new pics, before the new Destoroyah set hits. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psc4a319e0.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps4166d99f.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps43d2110f.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pse5e83df9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pse8e5d19e.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps83b554d2.jpg |
They're taking their time releasing a new regular Godzilla with the burning mold.
|
Agreed, I've kind of been holding out on getting the original because of that. However, with the advent of Kiryu, wouldn't it be prudent of them to release a Millenium version of Godzilla?

I just got King Kong today from my comic shop and I think he may be the best engineered Monsterarts to date. Granted that's partially due to the design but I still love him. I would have liked if he came with a mini Jack Black, only so I could use it as a Tenacious D figure. I really hope we see MonsterArts cover more properties outside of Godzilla soon.

Whatever came of the monsterarts angels from eva?
