Power Rangers was always a series aim towards kids from 3-8. I remember after the 3rd grade or 4th grade, Power Rangers was considered to be a lame thing. Power Rangers is one of the tamest kids shows out there, even my Cousin's four-year son loves Power Rangers.

I still remember when MMPR was a hot thing in pre-school and day care from 1994-early 1996. I even dress up as the Red MMPR Ranger for Halloween back in 1995.

The 90s was when you had people trying to ban anything violent. Music from Marylin Manson, video games such as Mortal Kombat, etc. were viewed as dangerous work of fiction. You had people back then (and even now) that think playing Mortal Kombat will turn you into a serial killer. I never get why Power Rangers was view as too violent when the show is produced by Saban. Saban is always known to be super strict on violence on TV which is why the Marvel cartoons never had anyone punching each other or why Tommy didn't die in MMPR.

No one that I knew took the whole "Power Rangers is bad and hurtful" to kids. Parents that I knew (including mine) laugh at it and call those people to be silly.

Going back to Romeo and Juliet, I just concluded that it's not a story about two star-crossed lovers; it's a story about two depressed horny teenagers who commited suicide just days after meeting each other.

Peehaps people viewed it as violent because it was live-action? I could be wrong seeing how I was born after this century started but maybe it's because cartoons were viewed as 'made-up' compared to real people punching each other? I mean, I'm pretty sure Transformers was slightly more violent than Power Rangers (but then again no one minds robot violence that much compared to people violence).

Have you seen the Disney Davy Crockett films and tv specials from the 1950s? Lots of shootings and stabbings. Characters died, albeit in a cheesy clearly fake manner. These were incredibly violent and yet marketed towards children. I find it very odd what’s considered acceptable over half a century ago vs what’s considered violent over the past 27 years.

Probably because it was live-action while those were animated so 90s censorship people were thinking this is close to reality, we must put restraints so that kids dont jump off a jungle gym to emulate a badass jump kick. :lolol

If I remember correctly Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was also deemed too violent for kids even though it was animated (not counting the live action films). I had neighbors that weren’t allowed to watch TMNT, Power Rangers, or The Simpsons. Strictly Disney and educational programming. I also had another neighbor that wasn’t allowed to watch Disney because it was “too secular.”

Which is why they made the foot soldiers robotic for the show, but even so? Dang. I mean yeah, the fact that radioactive anthropomorphic teenaged turtles were eating pizza within the sewers of a big city is a safety hazard, but come on. :lolol

Interesting. Me and my family are currently doing nightly Bible readings, religious literature, and we're going through the Book of Judges and let me just say that that's not exactly kid friendly material.

Personally, it's all about the content and the values they are showing. I love Kamen Rider because it promotes empathy and kindness as a valuable trait in heroes. With secular movies, I'm fine with most Disney movies (I'm not so sure about Good Dinosaur because of that weird mushroom eating scene) but secular films like Twilight or Cuties (barf!) which show some, um, questionable values I'm much more suspicious of.

What I'm trying to say here is that just because something is secular doesn't mean it's 'bad'. Also, just watching religious programming is fine but I've seen a lot of televangelists that contradict what the Bible says or twist it to their advantage, which I feel is a good reason (not the only reason) why there's so much suspicion towards churches.

Also, if any of you are parents or guardians, I advise not imposing too strict of rules on your kids or they'll try to break out when they're older and just run to the other side. Gently reprimand, not harshly scold.

It's probably because the MK movie was PG-13 and the cartoon was made to cash in on the movie. Despite MK being M/R rated, you did have kids that play the games. I still remember when MK was still at its prime in the mid 90s and I remember many kids would go to the arcades to play Mortal Kombat.

I also knew someone from 3rd-5th grade that had super strict parents and people would make fun of him for still watching PBS Kids shows. I try to be his best friend, but it was so hard. He was not even allow to play Mario, Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, etc because they had ghost and magic. I don't approve of bullying whatsoever, but he was lame. It was even worse when he tried to police us during lunch break when my friends and I would talk about stuff we like.

He would be like "Final Fantasy 7 is T rated. You guys can't play that!!" and we would normally ignore him. I still told people at my school not to make fun of him, and we should ignore him instead. Thankfully, we did ignore him, and he would move on to his own thing.

You know what's funny? Fast & Furious is R rated in my country simply because of the booty shots. Doesn't stop the teens from watching.

Fast and Furious has got to be the closest thing to an R rated film in a PG-13 rating. Although your country puts an R rating due to booty shots? Not for smoking, drinking, sexual innuendos, violent content or depiction of endangerment to nearby passerbys and law breaking?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not so sure if I'd show Fast and Furious to a 13 year old (a 15 year old maybe) but the reason for the R rating surprises me.

EDIT: Okay so here in Australia they classify it as 'M' which means not suitable for under 15.

I suppose a big factor would be how many people would be willing to pay international shipping in those cases. The thread I linked sectioned people off into those who were and those who weren't. I'd be willing to pay it, but I'm kinda crazy like that and I don't expect anyone else to be, lol.

F&F is a series that has stuff aim towards to kids such as toys just like Jurassic Park and the MCU. There's even an F&F cartoon on Netflix from what I was told. The first Fast & Furious movie came out when I was 10 and I remember it was popular with other kids that I knew in the 5th grade.

I'm doing alright today, not quite as productive as I wanted to be, but turns out I have less work then I thought, so it all works out.

Honestly that's probably why I like it so much too. It manages to be optimistic (except for Amazons but it has Mamorou so I forgive it), genuine and... real? IDK, my thoughts are pretty scattered on this kinda stuff.

I have a feeling that one day the MCU might be nigh-unwatchable.

Don't get me wrong, it's definitely among the best of superhero culture recently, but Phase 1 took like 10 years. Unless they allow Phase 2 to be watchable without needing to watch Phase 1, which could happen but with all the references to previous films I'm just not so sure how newcomers in the future will be able to handle it.

They made a massively successful Spider-Man movie (Homecoming) that never bothered to tell you Spider-Man's defining origin moments because everyone in the world already knows them. These characters and franchises are so ingrained in the pop culture that making references to past movies is largely unnecessary. I don't think they'll be doing a ton of looking backwards for the next phase of films, especially with newer franchises like The Eternals and Shang-Chi.

Just, like, anecdotally, my mom saw Guardians 2 without seeing the first one and loved it. She had a great time on just a pure entertainment level, which is something that it's easy to forget about with all of the 101 Easter Eggs videos on YouTube. These movies work great on their own!

Holding up good! Had to run errands for work today, but they all got done. Found an Earthrise Snapdragon at a Walmart while I was running those errands. (Being your own boss means you can do personal errands while doing work errands!) Had a box of stuff from BBTS show up that I'm just about to open. Watched a great episode of Hibiki that I just wrote up. Going to the Shedd Aquarium with a friend tomorrow. Doing pretty good!

I'd argue it's already unwatchable. It's already 20+ movies in with only a handful of solidly decent films. None of them are anything close to a Citizens Kane level of quality. Which I don't expect them to be but they could at least try once in awhile. Plus they couldn't stay away from propaganda, with Captain Marvel being perhaps the worst film in the franchise with an incredibly unlikable and highly politicized protagonist. But it goes deeper than that. The Thor films has Idris Elba playing the Norse God Heimdall, a fair skinned divine being of Asgard said in the Poetic Edda to have literally fathered the Nordic race and the direct link of ethnic Asatruar practitioners and Western Europeans as a whole to Odin the All-Father. Obviously intentional and clearly offensive (think about the outrage if an African deity was played by an Asian or European actor). I cannot watch Thor films anymore for that reason, even Ragnarok, which I did enjoy. I do not appreciate my heritage being diminished to half assed entertainment and subverted to have non-Nordic people play Norse Gods. I wasn't a fan of the comics doing it and I definitely am not a fan of the films doing it as well. Which I got to admire a film like Black Panther but at the same time be a bit envious of it too as Marvel can put all the time an attention to a fictitious African tale (as in not a legitimate African folk tale but loosely based on African folk tales) in having a nearly complete black cast, but they cannot afford the same respect to Nordic folk stories by having only Nordic actors play Norse Gods. Don't even get me started on Valkyrie. I hate these kinds of double standards and the hard push of certain topics for a desperate attempt to be "with it" in the current cultural climate.

Not everything has to be high cinema. The pretentiousness is what makes me dislike movies for a bit.

I personally don’t know where you’re from, but talking about Nordic gods as your "heritage" if you’re not from Scandinavia specifically or Germanic Europe as a whole sounds like you're reaching. Hell, I'm from Germany, no one talks about Germanic deities here unless it's fiction. They don’t matter to the wide population.

Also, about the "double standard", before you try to complain about that please remember which ethnicity has almost 100 years of movie history entirely dedicated towards them, no one else, and then think about if black people are applying a "double standard" or if you are.
