I hate April Fool's Day. The internet basically becomes useless for 48 hours (the beginning of the day in the earliest time zone to the end of the day in the latest time zone)

I mentioned a bit back that I was starting to watch Precure, and I've plowed through the first 3 shows (Futari Wa, Max Heart, and Splash Star). I... don't... dislike it so far, but I'm also having a hard time grasping how this series became such a long runner. I get that the physicality and intensity of the fights would have been pretty mind blowing back in the day for a series aimed so explicitly at young girls, but at the same time I haven't enjoyed it as much as I'd hoped so far. I think Splash Star was my favorite of the three, even if it wasn't particularly mind blowing it was well put together and a good deal of fun, probably an 8/10 if I'm feeling generous! The original two were a mess, even if Nagisa was a delightfully flawed protagonist who I'm not going to forget any time soon.
I'll probably watch more eventually, if for no other reason than I just want to understand the popularity of it all and maybe even find a favorite! I'll admit I'm wary of further entries though, since the whole Sentai-esque team angle seems like something that will collapse under its own weight more often than not. Heck, not even Sentai itself can manage so many characters a lot of the time. I really liked the concept of the dual heroes who have to transform and fighter together, and it was fairly novel, so I'm not looking forward to see it go and get replaced by something so much more generic. |
Admittedly I haven't watched a lot of PreCure, but I've read that HeartCatch is well-liked.

Aren't PreCure shows typically standalone? Or is it like Ultraman where there's established continuity but designed so you can watch any show by itself?
