I think The Woman Who Lived is my favourite of series nine so far.
I wouldn't mind seeing more of Maisie Williams. I like how episodes five and six could be considered "standalone" stories as well as a two-parter. |
Still need to catch up on series nine. Doesn't help that my family just switched cable providers, so now I lost all of my DVR recordings. :c
|
I am a huge sucker for "living with immortality" stories, so this episode was right the hell up my alley. I got a ton of flashbacks to Hob Gadling from Sandman this week, which is by all means a compliment. Capaldi continues to completely nail the role and Maisie Williams was fantastic as Me. The stuff with the lion dude felt really tacked on and underdeveloped, but it didn't take away from the episode.
Also, bonus points for the references to The Visitation and Captain Jack. Meanwhile, I'm sure Sentai will wet himself with excitement when he sees the trailer for next week. ;) |
Ahem.
OSGOOD OSGOOD IT'S MUTHAFUCKING OSGOOD! OH IT'S ABOUT FUCKING TIME SHE SHOWS UP IN THE DAMN SHOW! NOW THE DOCTOR CAN SAVE HER, AND DITCH CLARA, AND OSGOOD CAN BE THE COMPANION LIKE IT ALWAYS SHOULD'VE BEEN! DOCTOR AND OSGOOD FOREVER! ... Moving on. Clara said the words tonight. The words every single companion since Rose Tyler says before they're never heard of again... "I'll never leave" "I'm not going anywhere" And BAM. Gone. And it pisses me off. Clara had the perfect ending, the absolute perfect goodbye, but then she had to decide to stay and ruin the whole thing. Now.. who knows what'll happen. Long as I get Osgood in the TARDIS I don't much care either. OSGOOD! |
「@Sentai」
\0/, yuu must really like Osgood. XD |
That was a great episode.
Next week I'm not so sure about. On the one hand Zygons, on the other Osgood :( |

Damn, that was a good episode. Immortality stories, especially people who don't want immortality, are great, and this one was no exception. Especially since we didn't have attention sponge Clara to take away from Ashildr... Me... What are we supposed to call her again?
Plus, Captain Jack reference. Everyone loves Captain Jack reference :) Anyway, next week we have Zygons (YAY!) With Osgood (Eh.) By the writer of Kill the Moon (... oh dear no...) |

Hang on, what's wrong with Kill the Moon now? I liked that episode.

Personally, I didn't hate the moon episode, but I can totally see why others do. I thought the moon egg idea was pretty neat, but the ending was a complete cop-out. Definitely the weakest non-forest episode of season 8, though. |
「@Sentai + WhiteRanger」
I like Kill the Moon, too. (^_^) |
I can see why people might like Kill the Moon, but I really didn't. The blatant science errors, Clara being even worse than usual, that cop-out of an ending...
Not the best in Series 8, is what I'm trying to say |

How is this any more of a cop-out then that forest episode? |

Anyway, in less Capaldi-y related news:http://www.bigfinish.com/news/v/doct...tor-adventures 10th Doctor Big Finish things! With Donna! :D |
Big Finish just keep going from strength to strength. Hopefully this means we can get some multi-Doctor crossovers with Tennant one day.

Holy crap that was an INCREDIBLE episode this week, hands down the best of the season so far. Not just a good old fashioned "UNIT and an invasion" story, but one really kept the suspense going all the way through.
Everyone will know in this thread that I'm no far of Osgood, but she was used PERFECTLY. I could have lived without the bit talking about her clothing, but the rest was fantastic. I had a feeling they weren't going to address which was human and which was Zygon. That cliffhanger too. I did wonder if Clara had been switched but that reveal was just brilliant. Really really excited for part two. |
I suspect we've seen the last of Sentai, who will presumably drown in his own glee during the opening of this episode. Good night, sweet prince, and flights of Gosei Angels sing thee to thy rest... :(
:p I'm not sure about this episode. I didn't dislike it, but of all the first-part episodes this season it felt by far the most first-partiest. All of the others, even The Magician's Nephew, worked much better as full episodes. This one was mostly just a whole lot of set up for part two. I think it had at least one too many "oh my god, you moron, that is obviously a Zygon, get your head out of your ass!" moments, too. That said, it wasn't a bad episode and had some really good moments. I think the Clara reveal was well done. It wasn't super obvious, but there were enough clues to be suspicious. Actually, the episode definitely did a good job of making you second-guess every damn character in it who wasn't the Doctor. That was pretty cool. But yeah, I really want to see the next episode before I fully judge this two-parter. |
Moffat must be an anagram for Satan.
It was the best episode of the season, which for once BBC America didn't spoil with adverts before hand which is a refreshing change. Every week they give away the plot with their ads for the show (Also getting tired of them showing Star Trek TNG, Man vs Wild, and American Kitchen Nightmares instead of British programming. PBS shows more British programming than BBC America. But that's another thread). The cliffhanger makes me hate this two-parter heavy season even more. Seemed like kind of a political statement to, or maybe I'm reading to much into it because of how much I watch the news. But that's a theory for Twitter because I don't want to bring that discussion on the forum. This is though the first Doctor Who episode in a very long time where it actually felt like the world was in danger. But Moffat, Mr. Satan. hurt Osgood again and you're rising very high on my eternal shit list. |

Part of me hopes Clara really is dead though. I'm still not over her ruining the most perfect farewell her character will have last Christmas. |
Another really good ending to a two-parter. Capaldi and Coleman were both fantastic - Coleman's turn as Bonnie was especially effective. Really loved the climax with the Doctor desperately trying to get both sides to calm down. This season is honestly turning out to be one of the best ones yet, possibly even better than season 5, which is not something I'd say lightly.
Also: "Five rounds rapid." :D |
Did anyone notice that when the Doctor was giving the speech, Capaldi shifted into an American accent a little
⌠at least, that's how his accent sounded to my ears⌡? I agree with Switchblade; I'm reallii liking series nine. |

「@Switchblade」
An American game show host was the first thing I thought of. |
The scene with the Osgood Box, from his speech on to the end, was the single greatest moment I've seen on Doctor Who since it came back with Nine. It moved me to wipe tears from my eyes. It was just.. perfect. These two episodes have just been perfect.
And the ending with.. yea. Pissed Osgood isn't on the TARDIS, satisfied with what happened. Means there's still two more chances. |

So, next week, we have Gatiss and his found footage episode. Eh, it's Mark Gattis. He gets a chance with this |
Well, the streak had to be broken some time I guess :( that was a pretty dire episode.
Gatiss I expected so much better. |

My favourite Gatiss-penned episode is still The Crimson Horror, but Sleep No More wasn't too bad.
|
My favourites are probably a toss up between Night Terrors and Robot of Sherwood. Can't really decide between them because they're very different episodes.
