If you change them into humans, then change their names, at what point is it that you have to break the tenuous connection to MLP and just call it an original work?

Because Twilight and Celestia are still there. I'm not questioning it, i have a vision of where i want to go with this that involves a team up with my Pokemon themed Sentai without having Dimensional travel.

I seriously don't get why their AU counterparts have the same names...

In story: Why wouldn't they? Considering we live in a world where "North West" is a legitimate name, why is "Applejack" suddenly too weird?

Out of story: So the audience knows who they are.
For example, you take, Wataru Kurenai, KR Kiva, and turn him into a pony, but then alter his name to "Crimson Fang", the audience will get lost and have a rough time believing him to be the same character.

Isn't that a law of mirror universes though? All counterparts have the same names?

How about giving them names with the same initials? Like Twilight could be Trix-... I don`t think I thought this through.

Not really, it's just a prevalent trope to ensure the audience that the characters in said mirror universe are counters of the original characters.

I guess, coming from the south, odd names ("Rosswell", "Glitter", "Sweetie" (Granted, this one was a middle name), "Till", "Wish" etc etc) were just everywhere you looked, so it wasn't that strange for me :p

I hate that mindset. Transformers has been "Ruined Forever" let's see, about 14 times?
86ing Optimus in '86, Petenders, Beast Wars, Beast Machines, RiD, Armada, Kiss Players, TCC exclusive toys, Michael Bay, Animated, Prime, Beast Hunters, the overuse of Bumblebee, and just about anything that wasn't happening during 1984-85.

Ponies could do worse. the only problem I have with EG (currently) is character design. Fluttershy doesn't have a big yellow sweater, Applejack doesn't look like she's dressed practically for farm work, and Rainbow dash doesn't look "sporty tomboy-ish" enough and the head design that the school staff has.

I do like the CMC's human designs. They honestly look like how the fan artists draw them when going for human. Scootaloo looks like Sk8r Grrl, Apple Bloom looks like she's dressed practically for farm work, and Sweetie Belle looks like Rarity's fashionably enlightened baby sister.

The CMC are literally the only ones with good designs in that movie.

Fluttershy was given a big sweater in fan depictions to showcase her unreasonably large bust.
You don't wear your work clothes to school (Also, fan interpretation of AJ's work clothes will lead to the worst possible sunburns. Farm girls don't wear shirts tied up in a knot to expose their cleavage and midriff while wearing cut/legless jeans that ride so closely up your ass that they'd have to be wearing a thong just to not have their underwear show at all. It's like fan artists would rather have the porn interpretation of a farm girl represent AJ rather than what they'd actually wear).

Prime was declared ruined forever because it's Bayformers animated.
And then there's the whole "Trukk not munky" thing that plagued the fandom for years...

Eh...Vynil's not that bad. Sunset Shimmer is pretty cool. Luna looks atrocious though.

Beast Wars was Trukk not Munky. Prime was the art design being too "Bayformers meets Transformers Animated."

Personally, Beast Wars making Optimus a Gorilla was a non-factor for me. And Prime looking like the Bay movies with hints of Transformers Animated's smoother designs is a good transition away from the Bayformers design aesthetic.

That's a valid complaint.
But, then again, considering every mare in MLP outside of Rarity's mom and Mrs. Cake have the same figure, it does canonically make sense...

I'm not going to argue for it. It's completely valid to complain about and I will agree.
However, it does technically keep up with how the characters' physiques are presented with in show.

Fair enough... Wait, isn't Equestria Girls a feature film with the budget of one? Yeah, no fuck that. There should be no reason why all the characters have the same model with that kind of budget.
