Equestria has had helicopter technology (or at the very least, knowledge on how they actually get and stay airborne) since season 1.

This is the first time seeing a pony-sized vehicle.

Clearly you underestimate the defensive abilities of her protective gear.
Also, she is an Earth Pony, after all. If Cheerilee can bust down a wall, I'm sure she'll be fine (She also buckled her seat belts). :p

That's a different case. The first is that it's clearly powered by magic, while Cherry Berry's helicopter is powered by pedaling.

The second is weight of both the device and the one flying with it, making it very, very different.
It's the difference of knowledge of the technology and practical application, which makes the appearance of a helicopter large enough for a pony, sturdy enough to not crumple or break, but still light enough to get off the ground, a bigger deal than Tank's magic powered rotors.
