Dammit. First John Hurt dies and now Capaldi is leaving. WHY?! Why must it be this way?

My heart sank. :(

I'd honestly have a reaction if it felt like Capaldi had actually left a mark on the show.

But it doesn't. He's been great but outside of a few golden moments the writing for him has been all over the place, and his Doctor has only recently begun to show any signs of a unique character.

But ho hum. I'm still far more distraught about the upcoming War Doctor boxset being the last :(

Makes sense for him to leave with Moffat as they can have a great send-off. It also means I can finally get a Capaldi Years Collection on BD and rewatch his wonderful run.

I enjoyed his run. And I'm genuinely sad it's ending. My only complaints about his run have absolutely nothing to do with him and everything to do with Clara. (Namely Last Christmas not being her Last Episode, and that whole flying cafe idea). But now the fun starts again. Who will be his replacement?! ... Please be a woman o_o

I'm rather sad about Capaldi leaving. He had so much potential! I was really hoping we'd get a series of him under someone other than Moffat to see if he could shine. To be honest, I think the same thing about Matt. I wonder if Bill will stick around as a bridge or if that thing the mirror posted about a clean slate for series 11 will turn out to be accurate. (A stopped clock and all that.)

Of course, my biggest Doctor Who regret is the lack of a Wilf/Eleven scene. Matt did that old man in a young man's body thing so well sometimes that I think he and Bernard Cribbins would have been brilliant together.

Edit: It looks like the Ice Warriors (I love them!) are back in series 10.

Ugh, Tom Baker's season 18 costume. Why would you even make a figure of that, much less make it Tom's representation in a boxset? And is that Two Doctors Pat Troughton? What idiot chose the figures for this?

I think this came out a while ago. I know at the very least it was announced at SDCC. Honestly I stopped paying attention when the Doctor Who toy line turned to crap.

Hey, I like Tom Baker's season 18 costume!

But basically the costume choices here are because they've pretty much exhausted every other decent one. The line has become almost entirely repaints now and obviously the 11 Doctor set didn't shelfwarm enough for them, because they've gone and released this one with even more unnecessary variants.

Honestly my excitement for the new series was at 0 until I saw this news. I think it's the most hyped I've been about something Who-related that wasn't Big Finish in a long time.

I just hope Moffat doesn't screw it up.

I hope so, too, but I can't say I'm very optimistic considering his track record of late. They look pretty darned good though, don't they?

I'm not worried. If Moffat can still come up with things like Heaven Sent, I have faith that he'll find a way to go out on a high note.

Yeah, but he wrote or co-wrote six of the twelve episodes of series 9. Not to mention this past Christmas special. His batting average is pretty low at present.

I'm not sure why you're counting series 9 against him. Apart from Gattiss's eye booger monster episode that was one of the modern show's strongest years.

Mostly on the backs of the other writers. If you want to give him a pass for 9, feel free. I, personally, found the majority of it to be utterly naff. How about the majority of 8 then? 7? 6? 5? As a writer of single stories, as he did under Davies, he's great. As a showrunner, Moffat is severely lacking. The quality of certain cast members manages to elevate some of what he cranks out, which I think redeems the material a good deal in the eyes of some fans.

My biggest concern about the Cyberman episode is that it has Missy in it.

Not that I have anything against the latter particularly, it's just the third time that the former have had to battle screentime with someone else in the finale. And the two previous times they didn't come out well.

Series 5 is my favorite year of new Doctor Who and I feel 6 and 8 are generally quite strong in spite of some weak areas (8 had some crappy non-Moffat episodes, 6 devoted focused waaaaaay too much on River). I do agree that 7 is really weak, though, but more in how unmemorable it is, less for being bad. Honestly, I'm still on Team Moffat and have never really left it.

That said, I'm ready for him to leave. Doctor Who gets stagnant if it has the same creators in charge for too long and I think Moffat has passed his expiration date. I know he's only doing one more series because Chibnall isn't available yet, and honestly I don't have very high expectations for it, especially after that Christmas special. I do hope we get some good episodes, though, and that Capaldi continues to make his case for earning the title of Best Modern Doctor (I'm almost convinced, but not quite there yet).

So BBC America is playing Doctor Who all week (with a few exceptions) to gear up the premier of the new season and The Class. Right now it's showing "Journey's End". Dear Lady, was this meant to be an ending to the series?

Most definitely not, the show was at peak popularity.

Just found out that the man that played Mr. Weasely in Harry Potter also played Rory's father (Brian) in Doctor Who. Interesting, I thought his face looked familiar.

Quite liked the premiere. Bill is really likable and I'm genuinely surprised by how much I'm enjoying Nardole (it helps that he's only in a few scenes). Capaldi is, of course, still fantastic. A couple spoiler-y things of note:

So that guy on Twitter who claimed to have inside knowledge said that Susan is coming back this season. I still see no reason to assume he isn't lying, but it's pretty interesting that we're suddenly seeing a prominent photo of Susan on the Doctor's desk.

Looks like "the Vault" is this season's big mystery thing. Hopefully it's fairly unobtrusive and not crammed down our throats every week like that Impossible Girl stuff with Clara.

I enjoyed it. Mackie plays off Capaldi well, and Bill is a genunely fun character to watch. Nardole wasn't bad too, even if he was obviously written in in the final draft. Also, surprise Susan...

A lot of online news sources are claiming that Kris Marshall has been cast as the 13th Doctor, although the BBC is denying it.

If it true that he is no 13 aka 14 due to war then doctor will finally be ginger and that joke can finally die

Yeah, I also posted about that in the “How is everyone today?” thread. I didn’t see any articles or confirmation by the BBC at the time, just by the general media.

Yeah I hope that's just rumours. I like Kris Marshall but can't see him as the Doctor at all.

My only exposure to him in Love Actually, which is... not the most Doctor-y performance.
