Also recommend Carranger-One of the funniest/best shows I've ever seen period; combines comedy and badassness to make an incredible Sentai show that is loads of fun. Megaranger-An excellent Sentai dealing with the integration of technology in everyday lives and a coming of age story of teenagers fighting evil and dealing with High School. Balances fun, comedy and drama very well with a great cast, and considering you like Fourze this may be for you. Gingaman-An epic fairy tale-like story of warriors from a legendary forest who fight space pirates in order to protect the Earth and become legends of their own. The world and mythos it builds alongside the great story is a must watch. Abaranger-An emotional story about two worlds colliding and fighting to protect the world around them, and the ones they love. Another excellent story with some really, really good episodes and themes. Dekaranger- A cop series dealing with cops obviously dealing with criminals and aliens. A very episodic Sentai but has excellent one-shots and fun characters, and excellent fight choreography. Boukenger- Now this is going to be one you won't see too much, but it's one of the more underrated series today; Has a lot of good character development, one-shots and ideas of adventure that make it such a unique series. Avoid: Magiranger- The most annoying, boring, poorly written Sentai I've ever seen. |
Oooh, oooh! Can I make a list?
Gekiranger - Has a strong cast and places a lot of emphasis on developing the villain to prevent him from being some generic guy throwing monsters around on a weekly basis. Energetic, but doesn't shy away from some powerful drama. Dairanger - One of the few Sentai with a rather interesting series of stories that last throughout the series. Being the second series with a 6th, it gives some pretty interesting stories to meld them in without marginalizing the other rangers. Kakuranger - Ninjas are cool! It's super fun and energetic during the first half, but after a rather heavy series of episodes, it takes a much more serious tone, but doesn't feel out of place. Yeah, those are the 3 that I can recommend, myself. A lot of Sentai are really good, but I feel those 3 series go above and beyond. If I can name a few to avoid, I'd have to say Sun Vulcan and Shinkenger (Rather dull and incredibly slow beginnings, both taking over 20 episodes to really get interesting) Kyoryuger (It can be enjoyable, but the hero worship Daigo/KyoryuRed gets is a bit overbearing. It basically depends on your tolerance) |

For other recommendations, you can do Gokaiger, Liveman, or Jetman, but hold on with jetman and gokaiger until you've seen at least 1 or 2 sentai. But overall, It all depends on with concept you like. |
If you don't mind the fact that it's still airing, I would actually recommend Zyuohger. Otherwise, maybe Gekiranger.

My thoughts on some of my favorite seasons:
Gokaiger (2011, space pirates theme) - it's similar to Kamen Rider Decade in that they use the powers of past series as a main gimmick. It's not similar to Decade in that it has great characters and is one of the most consistently entertaining seasons. Gekiranger (2007, animal martial arts theme) - the red ranger in Gekiranger is a jungle man whose personality can get a little annoying, but beyond that it's one of the best seasons. Awesome combat both in suits and in mechs, and a GREAT villain group. The Gekirangers' enemies grow stronger as the Gekirangers do, which is awesome. Shinkenger (2009, samurai theme) - main cast is appealing, and the individual episodes are usually very good, but the story drags in the middle third of the show. I love the suit combat in Shinkenger, but the mecha combat isn't as good. The final twist in Shinkenger's plot is well-known / pretty cool. Jetman (1991, birds and air force theme) - very popular early 90s show for a lot of reasons. The main characters (both heroes and villains) are awesome. The action in suits is sort of generic by modern standards, but the mecha stuff is great and the individual episodes are really good. Very strong Sentai series for characters and story. Dairanger (1993, Chinese martial arts theme) - I *love* the suit designs and mecha designs in Dairanger, and the action is really well-choreographed. The main five Dairangers and their mentor Master Kaku are awesome, but the sixth ranger is a shitbag who gets too much story shine (IMHO, of course). The story is mostly good, and gets bonkers at the end. Dekaranger (2004, space police theme) - I really like Dekaranger's gimmicks and setup (influenced by police procedurals, lots of 2-part episodes) and the characters are mostly likeable. The plot is a little disjointed and isn't a slow build like the best Sentai stories, though. Zyuohger (2016, animals and cubes theme) - I don't know where the plot's going (of course) but I think very highly of the current series. Really likeable cast, great action in suits, okay action in mechs, and cool story ideas. I would at least recommend you watch the first episode and decide if you want to keep going with the current weekly Sentai joint. Maybe avoid these: Goseiger (2010, angels and cards theme) - I really dislike the Goseiger cast and was constantly annoyed watching them in the crossover movies with Shinkenger and Gokaiger. Couldn't watch more than three episodes of the show. Cool helmet designs, though. Ninninger (2015, ninjas theme) - I've only seen the first few episodes (didn't love it, didn't hate it), but it's probably the most disliked recent season of Super Sentai. It has some fans, but the most common reaction to its finale earlier this year was "thank goodness it's over." Ohranger (1995, modern military and ancient civilization theme) - I didn't like the first few episodes of this show, and I've heard that it had to undergo major rewrites partway through the series that really mess with the show's tone. I also think the suits and mecha designs look silly, personally. |
I want to defend Goseiger, since there are some good things (GoseiRed's rivalry against Dereputa, GoseiKnight, Brajira, etc), but there's just so much to slog through (The rest of the Warstar are rather boring, the Yuumajuu tribe arc is godawful, and the Mantrintis don't get enough time to properly shine), so it's understandable why most don't recommend it.

Monsoon, ohranger is one my favorite sentai. You can't blame the show to be bad just because of the incidents back in day.

It's not the show's fault that the incidents occurred, but it all falls onto the writers on how to handle things. And if they handled it poorly, it shows. The show doesn't magically become better knowing the history of what went down. |
I know that's not the right thread but, why no one answer the power rangers discussion thread ?

What would you do if your girlfriends or your friends find out about your obsession with Super Sentai and Kamen Rider?
They will be like "Are you too old for this kids show? It's too weird! You're a grown man who watch a little kid show! Why are you watching a Power Rangers rip-off crap?" This would be a scariest situation for your guys if you don't give them a reason of your obsession with Sentai and Rider stuff Remember your girlfriends and your friends are NOT a fans of SENTAI AND RIDER SHOW |
I got my best friend into Kamen Rider. All of my friends are geeky/nerdy type of people that like the same type of stuff that I like. Friends should accept on what you enjoy even if they don't like it as long if it's not hurting any one. No one is going to tell me on what I can or can't enjoy. I would not be friends with people if they don't accept me for who I am.

She also buys her own figures and also watches shows primarily made for children. A good portion of my friends I got into Kamen Rider and Super Sentai. When I lived in student housing we used to watch Gokaiger together every week. In short, stop generalising because not everyone is super judgemental. |
They don't "Find out." I just straight up tell them.
Like when a friend who wasn't aware I liked Sentai started asking what I was watching so often, I let him know. I even had a little laugh by showing him Zyuoh The World holding his fishing rod and flashlight, since even with context, it's still really silly. My obsessions aren't something I'm ashamed or afraid of (Well...90% of them I'm not), so my friends finding out don't really bother or frighten me. |
You should not be friends with people that mock you for what you like. If they make fun of you for liking a show that is market to kids, they can fuck off. It may sound rude, but I dealt with people that made fun of me behind my back for liking things that I enjoy like Japanese monsters, anime and manga.

A weird question but if you somehow become the president of Toei, What is your first thing to do with Super Sentai and Kamen Rider?

Kamen Rider, tone down on the overly loud comic relief. Keep the comic relief, but tone it down. Oren was the perfect amount/example. |
Don't be a a closet fan with other people. If other people judge you for it, let them be and move on. However just don't be in other people's faces about it. I wear Kamen Rider T-Shirts in public, but I don't be like "Hell yeah! Look at my shirt!!! I'm a big Toku fan!!!!".

Ever since Bayformers made millions of dollars, it's hard to be an out and out Tranformers fan since everyone who hears it thinks of Bayformers and I get the looks of "So you're the reason why movies are bad now." |
I'm pretty open about my geekiness. My facebook is full of posts about comic books, anime, and video games. I also post my cosplay pics and stuff like that. I usually only mention super sentai and kamen rider to people who may seem interested in it. Not because I'm hiding it, but I wouldn't try to talk about Batman with somebody who's not interested in Batman, so why would something like Kamen Rider be any different? My close friends all know I'm into it, and I've watched it with them sometimes. A couple of people have shown interest in watching it, a couple of people are just like "oh cool." Some are more like "i'll stick with power rangers" and finally a couple don't really have any opinion on it. I got into toku while dating my ex, and she kind of experienced it with me, but her opinion varied. For some reason she was way more supportive of my interest in Kamen Rider than in my interest in anything else - she made fun of me when I watched Sentai, but bought me Kamen Rider Battride War for Christmas. I didn't get it, but whatever. That's all over now.
Lately all of the friends I've been making are just as much of a geek as I am, so they understand being part of a fandom that is usually seen as weird. One of my friends even watched part of Ghost with me and now wants me to give her all of the episodes I have downloaded. I think I even may have her convinced to cosplay Alain haha. Another friend I met recently is actually into Power Rangers and Sentai. It's always cool meeting other members of the fandom. But even with non-geek friends, I never hide it. I have a Power Rangers shirt, a Kamen Rider shirt, and two Godzilla shirts (in addition to a ton of Batman, Avengers, and anime shirts) that I wear quite often. Generally, if somebody judges another for being into that kind of stuff, then I'm not going to get along with them anyways - geek interests are a big part of who I am. If they ARE into it, well I gotta let the geek flag fly so I can find others somehow. |
Re: The girlfriend finding out about tokusatsu
Yeah, that was never a problem with me? My ex-girlfriends was an actual adult and decent human being so she didn't care what I watched as it has no impact on who I am as a person. She's also sat down and watched a few shows with me, so that was cool. In general I don't really hide it though. I'm a Japanese major in college, so I'm always around anime fans and they don't really care. Quote:

Wristwear, phones, or others.
Which henshin device type do you prefer. I prefer wristwear, they just feel more iconic like rider belts. |
I prefer something unique. Wrist wear is fine if it's done well or creatively.
I hate cell phones. They're garish and just don't look that good. Even with, like, 10 total cell phone changers, I'm already sick of them. |
I prefer wriswear/braces/whatever you wish to call them. A bit more practical.
Plus it means if I buy them I can actually wear them outside of cosplay. |

Who is the MOST INTERESTING Red Ranger?
It's hard to like Red Ranger because they get more Screentime, more toy and more spotlight than others but which Red Ranger who is find by many others to be the most interesting red ranger? |
Jan Kandou/GekiRed

I'm gonna go with Geki from Zyuranger. Not because he's all that interesting, but because the majority of the other Sentai I've seen had less interesting reds. Ryo Tendo comes close, but his development seemed kind of forced and Gai stole the spotlight for most of that series. |
