So I'm a little confused as to why those 3 seasons could use movie footage. Were they allowed to but chose not to use it (Despite PR having a low budget), or were there contract restrictions on certain seasons? |

It's EVERY SINGLE POWER RANGER up to that moment vs. a bunch of aliens. How great, how wonderful of an homage to the series history, after every single one ending with he heroes on the brink of destruction and triumphing at the last moment, would it have been for them to finally, FINALLY, claim an overwhelming victory? |
So I just have to say I was watching the RPM segment of History of Power Rangers and I absolutely lost it when he quoted the original show director's reaction when he saw the series he was going to be adapting.
|
Linkara is apparently re-releasing segments of this series with updated background information and additional story details.

There is some stuff at the beginning noting that he's correcting some mistakes.
I do hope this will lead to the addendum "Correction" video(s) he said he intended on making to fix mistakes or bring up points he glossed over or missed. |

I might check this out later though since I have been wanting to rewatch his HoPR episodes of the series I have just recently watched. |

Oh, Linkara just told me that the addendum videos aren't gonna happen, and this is just a reupload.
Darn. |
In case anyone's interested, this week's Atop the Fourth Wall features Linkara watching and reviewing the first five episodes of Gokaiger:

He said he planned to at one point, but since the franchise has started airing new episodes, he's since retracted that statement.

Oh God I'd forgotten how fucking horrid the Dekaranger version of Doggy was. I mean come on, you can see the zipper on his back! :lol
|
Honestly, I'm just glad they actually had his mouth moving.
Watch a few episodes of Dekaranger. After episode 5, his jaw just kind of hangs open :lol |

Though even borders wouldn't stop random companies from falsely claiming ad revenue on Toei's behalf, even if he wasn't running ads. There have been people who have had their videos claimed by fake companies for music that the video maker made themselves. Most insultingly, the claiming companies do so on behalf f thsoe people. These fake companies get free money with zero legality behind it. Youtube's broken, dude. You gotta be careful and make every effort to bypass the nonsense, even if you're verified or backed by the real corperations, unless you're a giant channel Youtube won't even acknowledge you exist. |
So if I am seeing this right, he did a HOPR for the MMPR redo, Samurai, and Megaforce? He really spit some out quickly when for awhile it took up to 8 months to do one
|
That's because he made a schedule rather than spitting them out "When they were done."
As for the MMPR one, it was a 30 minute video, not the normal 2+ hour ones. |
Also a lot of the ones that took like 8 months were because he was moving and doing a lot of conventions and stuff.
|
So I have some thoughts on HoPR in general. I figure a public forum with a thread devoted to them is as good a place as any to "think out loud."
I've been a fan of Linkara for years. His first review I caught was Terminator vs Superman, and I've been a weekly viewer ever since. The whole History of Power Rangers series was sort of out of left field when it first came up. I didn't get into the franchise through HoPR, but it was what reintroduced me. I had stopped following around the cast changover during Turbo's first run. I would watch a few episodes here and there when I stumbled across them during my teen years, but mostly for the monster/robot fight pwrn. HoPR started off as a neat nostalgic look back. Then I decided to give some of the post-Turbo shows a shot, to "catch up on what I missed." So thank you Linkara, if you're reading this. I thought I was out, and you pulled me back in :D So some thoughts on the series as a whole... I'm a bit disappointed that Linkara didn't mention the behind the scenes friction between JDF and ASJ. Especially given that it's an issue that still hasn't been resolved. I know that JDF flamewars are a thing, and Linkara likes to shy away from instigating them, but I feel like HoPR as a retrospective on the series is a bit incomplete without mentioning it. I feel like the "redone" MM retrospective videos would have been a good place to work that in. I'm of the opinion that they should have used the Gosei Sentai Dairanger suits for season 2 of MM. It's purely an aesthetic preference. I just think they look cool. I'm not feeling the love for In Space. Well...I kind of do. I understand why it's beloved and I won't tell anyone who likes it that they're wrong. It's just that, to me, the screwed up continuity of the team in Turbo really takes a lot out of the punch behind In Space's finale. This is the end of the Zordon era. And no one from the original team is there. Bulk and Skull's "IT'S THEM?" reaction the team revealing that they're the Power Rangers just seems empty because these people really aren't anyone significant to them. Just imagine that scene if it were the original team. Or even the second iteration of the original team with Rocky, Adam, and Aisha. I understand that actors want to move on, and I commend the writers for making the best of a less than ideal situation. I just think the series is hurt a bit due to events unfolding the way they did. Lost Galaxy is now probably my favourite season out of the whole lot. The sword and sorcery/Arthurian bent to the source material is right up my alley. I do wish they would have stayed closer to the source material. Maybe a MM prequel about Rangers fighting a threat on ancient/pre-historic/high fantasy Earth? I donno. Just an idea. Still? I really dug what we got. Generally speaking I applaud Linkara's attempts to make sense of some unanswered questions with his own fan theories, but stuff like "time works differently in the PR universe" seems like jumping the shark a bit. Fan speculation is awesome, but sometimes you just gotta go "the creators done goofed." I'm curious to see what Linkara has to say now that we know the reason why David Yost left the show. I disagree with Linkara's criticisms of MF that centre on the "Nick was born into his destiny and that's a bad massage" argument. Fact is that, despite our society's egalitarian nature, some people are born into certain situations that they have no control over. Be it responsibilities they never asked for, wealth, or poverty. A show that has the message of "sometimes you're born into a situation and you need to better yourself as a person to meet that situation head on" isn't elitist. It's a pretty good message. It's also a season with a fantasy bent, and fantasy storytelling has deep roots in medieval traditions that do place a lot of emphasis on being born into your role in life. It's a trope that comes with the territory. I've actually seen all of the neo-Saban series as they've aired, the first series I can say that for since the first part of Turbo. I have a theory for Samurai that would explain why the team follows Japanese feudal customs without being Japanese. It doesn't fit, but it's still a fun though exercise. Here me out. RPM doesn't take place in an alternate universe. It really was the apocalypse of the PR world. Humanity, for the most part, had to start from scratch afterwards. So the survivors would have these half-forgotten stories from the past and those would form the basis of myths going forward. So you could have a generally multiracial culture that discovered bits and pieces of feudal Japanese history and modelled their society after it. Eighteen generations later (so FAR in our future)? Boom. Multiracial samurai that conform to Japanese customs. Of course Bulk's presence and the RMP crossover ruin it, but hey. It's an idea I had. I'm excited to see what Linkara has to say about DinoCharge. Negative reviews can certainly be entertaining, but HoPR works best when Linkara is excited about the franchise. Again, just some thoughts I had while watching the series. |
I only really have to touch upon three of your points.
First, concerning the behind the scenes problems with some cast like ASJ and JDF, it's just simply because it doesn't matter. He's talking about Power Rangers, not the beef between two actors. While he does bring up some behind the scenes drama, it's only because it may be relevant (Danny Slavin's hesitance to return for Lightspeed's crossover and Forever Red, for example). Bringing up a mild feud between two former co-stars would basically be the equivalent of fanning the flames. For In Space, I felt it was a nice send off. The powers were always shifting and changing. TJ and the Turbo rangers, who proved their mettle during Earth's time of need, going so far as to explore the cosmos, were more than deserving to stand as the champions in that scene than someone like Jason, who ditched the team to head to Australia without a moments notice. While the original rangers not returning was a little disappointing, the "It's them?" reaction held a lot of weight to me. These weren't the rangers goofing off in high school then saving the day in an afternoon. These were the rangers who, when villainy reared it's head, they actively sought to stop it. And, as for Mystic Force, the issue stems from the fact that Nick's destiny basically marginalized the team. It went from 5 people working to overcome a foe to 4 people holding up one man to fix the world's problems as their mentor showers that one man with praise. |

In case anybody's interested, Linkara just recently uploaded the first part of the reworked version of the HOPR retrospective for Power Rangers Zeo on YouTube. Part 2 of it should be up soon.
EDIT: Part 2 is now up. And apparently, on an unrelated note, he has seen a bit of Star Wars: The Clone Wars given his acknowledgement of the character of Asajj Ventress. That's pretty neat. :) |
Are there any differences between the two versions? When I hear reworked, I'm assuming it's just edited differently to not call down Youtube's copyright wrath.
|
Similar to the redux version of the MMPR retrospective he did last year, Linkara goes into more details of the major story elements of the season along with several stuff that he neglected to mention in the first version of the retrospective for one reason or another.

Well folks, the series is back once again-
History of Power Rangers DINO CHARGE! http://atopthefourthwall.com/history...s-dino-charge/ |
That was pretty good, I know people were disappointed in Dino Super Charge, but the reason I like Linkara's view is because he watches the shows all at once and has no preconceptions based on what the Sentai did.
Now to wait two years for Ninja Steel. :D |
It was pretty good, and also only 80 minutes, a much easier viewing as opposed to the 3 hours SMF was.
I ended up dropping Dino Charge when they transitioned to Super, so I didn't really know about the ending, other than people being really disappointed by it, and I can see why. Huh...That's a strange way to go. I didn't know much about Heckyl's character, but looking at his frosted tips, he would've made a great Navy Ranger, which also ties into the Dark Energem, since Deathryuger was evil, at first. Oh well. I generally agree with his overview of the show. In hindsight, it did seem like it was specifically trying to fix widely complained points about SMF. Also, thank fuck, he's talking about the zords again. I don't remember if he talked about them in Samurai or SMF, so if he did, my bad :lol |

Lets f*cking go! |
Was so excited to see a new episode up. Was wondering when he was gonna get around to it.
I never really got around to Dino Charge, mostly due to my massive hate boner for Kyoryuger. It does look like it was an overall pretty decent season though, I may go and give it an actual watch sometime. That ending though, as bad as when I first heard about it. |
I kind of hoped this would be another three hour long rant on how bad Dino (Super)Charge was, but to be fair, it was a definite improvement over (Super) Megaforce. On its own, I would say Dino (Super)Charge was just average. Not groundbreakingly good, nor facepalmingly bad. So I do agree with his review.
I also read the interviews Linkara was referring to, which were really enlightening on why the quality of (Super) Samurai and (Super) Megaforce was not so great. As Linkara already told, it more or less came to Tzachor regarding character development as boring, while wanting to cram as much action in an episode at the expense of "boring" character moments. Below are links to them: (Super) Samurai Megaforce Super Megaforce |
Having only seen the first three or four episodes of the show, it was nice to finally get to see how this all ended. Looks like things turned out pretty well; I may go back and finish the show at some point now that it's on Netflix. Heckyl, in particular, looks like a really fun character that I'd like to see in action.
I think Linkara seriously overthought the ending, though. That is a lot of time spent trying to reconcile something that was clearly meant to just be a silly plot twist. |

The problem is that Linkara still treats PR like it's one big continuity, when it clearly stopped around Lightspeed Rescue.
Yeah, the crossovers, but they rarely do anything pertinent for the plot... ...And then they have a relevant crossover and throws that out the window, but you get what I mean... |

Talking about continuity and seeing how it all fits is fun, though. His idea that Time Force developers after this blatant fuckery of history is a neat idea.
