I just watched the recycling episode earlier! I feel committed to delivering the kind of weirdness in what I do that cannot be found elsewhere whilst still attempting to remain vaguely consistent, but I suffer greatly from having a dumb idea like this and then thinking, no, actually I have to do this now.

It's such a great episode, right?! I mean there are so many great episodes, but I really wanted to do a version of the Kamen Rider Scouts and the Shonen Warriors from Black—and who doesn't want a world full of porcupines? They're adorable, lol.

I can relate. I spent 4 years working on my second fanfiction and the direction wildly changed across several hiatuses. The only thing that remained consistent was that there was a late game fight between Sailor Uranus and my OC villain. Plus my style changed across the various hiatuses, so I had to try and backtrack to my original style, while going ahead with mostly new ideas.

Agreed, porcupines are the best.

Black was my first and only one of two foray's into Showa Rider, so it and the various plots they do have special places in my heart. So it's always fun to see some Black references.

But honestly, I get you, it's difficult when you have time away, but I try not to worry too much about it. If I thought anyone was genuinely looking at what I was doing and taking it seriously, then I'd be worried, but I'm quite comfortable with the fact that a lot of what I do on and off fic sites flies under the radar. :p

Oh, I love it, I really do. I'm currently re-watching the series/finally watching some of the later episodes I've never seen during my "lunch breaks" and it's just been an absolute joy. I think it's such an amazing series, and even though Stronger is my favourite show, I absolutely think that Black may quite possibly be the definitive Kamen Rider show, the show that I would try and make friends watch if I associated with anyone who wasn't a cat, lol.

Now, of course only one may arise from a Sailor Senshi and a "Yodonna Berserkir" club. Why, the ringleader herself!

Part of what I try and do with new shows is second guess where they might go and write possible "what if" scenarios as each new episode airs, but, ah, the trouble with that is that eventually the shows stop being new and I realise I'm playing this game of not exactly contradicting the direction the show has moved in but trying not to contradict what I have said previously, so I end with this weird new continuity built out of moving parts.

I really love Sailor Moon, you know. Mostly the older stuff, but also the musicals. In fact, I love the musicals so much that really everything I do is filtered through the lens of their influence. I know they're not everyone's cup of tea, but because I like them so much they are my first basis of comparison now, like a second language, so it kind of made sense to play Reika in this way.

It'll be one day we'll be able to pay for those expensive P-Bandai merch! I wonder if they sell Kamijou's jacket, too...

Aye, it's all about the influence. And by a quick google search, it is interesting. I've only known Sailor Moon via the anime which I watched way way way way long ago when I was smol boy. Initially forcing myself to watch it after school so I can wait out the transformers show coming on after, eventually investing into it because "Ooh, pretty girl beat up the bad guy! That's awesome!"

But mostly, I never thought of the comparison with Rider because when it comes to comparing Rider to Magical Girls, my mind always default to either Madoka (because Urobutcher), or its Super Hero Time sister Precure. To which, I'm somehow gaining interest this year lmao

Absolutely. Your story of watching Sailor Moon made me smile! It's weird because I started watching as another girl I knew had figures from it that her dad had brought in Chinatown, and I was just transfixed by the outfits. The whole style of it reminded me of watching Battle of the Planets when I was young, so I really went in big for the show.

I've only seen the first three PreCure shows and I liked them well enough, and there are enough photos of me standing next to cardboard cutouts of the characters in shopping centres to last a lifetime, but I've sort of fallen behind with following them. Same with Madoka, which I liked at the time, but I have always felt has attracted an awful lot of edgy kids, who I'm not always comfortable brushing shoulders with.

Gosh, I'd love to get to do my own magical girl series, I adore this genre so much.

And I can't deny Madoka definitely attracted such a crowd and may or may not have tainted views on Mahou Shoujo for a good while. I guess it's just something you'd have to take in regard while also enjoying it.

I certainly wouldn't want to diss it, because I remember thinking it was really clever. I'm just... I sometimes feel disappointed when people go in for deconstruction of a theme like this, as there is that element of the audience that acts as if it just invented the wheel. Like I want to respect their passion, but there's so much more the genre can offer that being taken apart.

It's a show I hold dear, not cuz it's some deconstruction or some o mighty subversion of the genre, but it's more so the emotions that I caught myself making when watching it. Heh. Sure wish more see it that way instead of the deconstruction part.
