DoraTurtle is freaking awesome.

Still early days with me and Go-Busters but I'm still really, really enjoying it, I'm just kinda sat here waiting for it to go bad.
|
Finished Battle Fever J episode 23, it was a clip show but it was nice and it was fun to see them playing Space Invaders. One of my favorite episodes. Next is the switch of Miss America's

One complaint with Go-Busters so far is the mecha.
I LOVE Ace's design (hence my sig), it was sleek and so very...mech like. I'm gonna reveal a controversial opinion in three...two...one... I HATE the mech part of Super Sentai/Power Rangers, I always think the mech designs look absolutely rubbish. They're always cluttered, bulky and cheaply made with bits of cardboard just flapping about the place, they seem about as convincing as if I ran around with a cardboard box on. And as much as you can say "'eh it's just toku man, you cant say that about one aspect and not another"...well no, the technology and effects around the robot sections seems to be about a decade behind the rest of the show. While suits become more and more complicated, wirework becomes more and more natural and flowing and all round better CGI becomes more available to the ground fighting the big mech revolution... make the robots look plastic and animate them with cheap CGI? Anyway that was a tangent my point is...Ace was streamlined, it looked like a proper mech and it was awesome and I loved it. Ever since then though the combinations basically just involve sticking crap on Ace, like the way the Gorilla mech basically just becomes a really fat gut for Ace and with each new combination it looks bigger, bulkier, more cluttered and the amount of movement the suit actor can manage is diminished. I honestly can't remember the last time a mech looked like anything other than an obese man dressed as a tree for a nativity play. |

The good thing about the lackluster combinations in Go-Busters is that they were used pretty sparingly, meaning the individual mecha got to shine for much longer.
On hindsight though, the cluttered designs for Go-BusterOh/King don't bother me so much anymore. I enjoy them because they aren't supposed to be super fighting robots in the way other Super Sentai mecha are - they're last resort power house robots that don't need to do much much movement. Which I thought worked really well with the story given how they showed how easily it can run out of power as well. |

I think if anything the clunky stacking of the mecha feels more out of place here than in other series, sure it looks rubbish wherever it is but in a more fantasy orientated series the whole piling on aspect kinda fits with the ridiculous nature of it all. Here however, you would think, being that the Go-Busters are an actual organisation, they'd build mecha for functionality and purpose and avoid the fantastic and ridiculous. So it seems an odd design to just take one mech and stick loads of other mechs on it. Especially as Ace is designed to fight Megazords on his own anyway. |

Thankfully that's A LOT less apparent in later episodes. |

Watched Episode 23-24 of DaiRanger and 24 of Battle Fever J. Episode 23 was great for ShiShiRanger. I really loved the explanation of the Miss America switch in the story.

So I'm around ten episodes into Go-Busters so far and really enjoying it, I haven't actually hit any filler yet despite what I was lead to believe about the series.
What I will say though is Ryuu is a great character...perhaps a little too great. He has had by far the most focus and the most memorable moments and everything we learn about him is really interesting. With each episode Red and Yellow just sort of feel like they're kinda...there, I wish Ryuu was Red, it'd make more sense. |
I just saw the GoBusters Gokaiger team up, i feel like parts of this were made just to be adapted into Power rangers.

All of the rangers feel like they are just there soon. Hell, the commander and his two lackeys have no business being in the show because they do absolutely nothing. Of course, the Buddyroids are teh worst thing about the show as they are so annoying. |

I still find the command centre hilarious, despite having these mech hanger bays with hundreds of workers, the heart of the base is...three people in a small room in swivel chairs? I know they did the same in Rescue Force, another toku series, but there it made a bit more sense. I like Nick, but that rabbit guy with his angering catchphrase and the stupid insecure monkey can fuck off. |
Like I said. Locke is gonna hit Beet and Stag, the two who saved the series for everyone else, and declare the series took a dip in quality after their introduction :p

So I just watched the opening episode of Bioman and my GOD it was glorious! They don't make them like that any more, just a shame only ten episodes are translated. Also fuck that comic relief robot.

Just finished episode 27 of Battle Fever J. A Wonderful episode, and probably the one with no video problems at all. Egos are very smart but Battle Fever is even smarter. Also loved Battle France in this episode he stole the show.
Well Episode 28 was a return to bad video quality and horrible audio during the Giant Robo fight. Good Kenya/Miss America episode, bit filler-ish. |

So I just checked out Kakuranger episode 1.
And eh. The charm of the older Sentai series for me is how shit they are, I'm a sucker for extremely cheap practical effects and melodrama and I enjoyed the episodes of BioMan I watched because it is like something you'd find on Mystery Science Theatre. That is the same reason why Jetman is one of my favourite sentai series. Kakuranger doesn't really have that kind of charm, it's far from huge budgets or serious but it sticks fairly close to martial arts film tropes and just does them much more cheaply. So not only does it provide none of that crappy charm but it gives me no reason to watch it above any of the martial arts classics. That said, I am a big sucker for Sentai that feels like live action anime which is why I stuck through Shinkenger even after it bored me so much I almost slipped into a coma. |
