It's a very downer scenario and, while it does have a happy ending, it's not very optimistic (All of the Crystal Ponies experience massive depression) and the urgency is far greater (Notice how Celestia doesn't even treat Nightmare's return as a threat (Despite knowing it'd happen for a thousand years) and how the show intentionally downplayed Chrysalis's threat by giving her two songs).

Yes, they're cool as hell, no denying that, but it underplays their threat by having them break down their plan and how evil they are for 2 minutes while singing.

Actually, she was.
She had a well thought out plan with decent timing, played Twilight's emotions, tricked and broke apart the only ones who could stop her, and was only overcome by an unexpected variable.

Yes, but what exactly was Chrysalis there to do anyway? I'm assuming that she planned to pretend to be Cadence permanently, but the way she was treating everyone doesn't exactly scream "Covert Ops," not to mention the fact that she kind of triggered her own undoing by putting Twilight in the exact same prison as Cadence. If I were her, I would've left Cadence in alone in the caves, and put Twi in some other location.

It's fairly clear what Chrysalis's goal was. She didn't anticipate Twilight and Cadance having a background together, which was her own undoing.
Even then, she was still prepared even should her first plan have failed, as evidenced by having her invasion completely at the ready during the wedding.

That and Chrysalis could have wanted to have Twilight straight up kill Cadence. She tapped the two in separate cells and mocked Twilight to the point of "bitch-I-kill-u mentality so that Twilight would break into Cadence's cell and blast the true Alicorn bride sealing the fate of the kingdom.

What really stopped Chrysalis was the "sunshine sunshine" dance. Chrysalis saw it and straight up dismissed it as just some random thing, and Cadence proved her legitimacy with it.

Just finished EG (Took me long enough, right? :p)
To give my thoughts but not a full review,
The story was fine. It felt like an extended episode. To some, that's a bad thing. For me, I'm fine with it. When adapting a TV show into a movie, one of the biggest problems is the change of media, and often the "Feel" of the show is lost when making the entire situation grander. While I would have wished for things to feel larger, I do like that it didn't lose the charm of the series.

The songs were par for the course. Helping Twilight get the crown is playing on permanent loop in my head. So, I guess that means the song was good. The other songs weren't anything special, but they weren't bad.

Sunset as a villain was okay. She was just kind of a bitch, which, for a high school setting, is normal. I remember some people having issue with her "Redemption" at the end, but, speaking from experience, I think it's normal (My middle school bully was my best friend in high school, so I know stuff like that can happen).

The climax came out of left field. I don't know how I feel over it. Rainbows of Death solve every problem, I guess.

And the cameos were fun. I loved all of them, Trixie being my favorite (Sorry Vinyl). Oh, and people said Principal Celestia looked weird. Outside of her more pronounced lips, I don't see anything odd...

In all: Decent movie, fun background events, decent villain, Flash Sentry better stay out of Ponyville.

Actually, he lives in the Crystal Empire.
But if Season 4 starts with him moving to Ponyville, it will be the first time MLP will make me legitimately angry, since involving boyfriend drama would be the complete counter of what FiM was trying to escape.

Unless, of course, Flash were to replace Twilight...

But we don't have to worry about that. Meghan McCarthy confirmed on June 16th, 2013, that Flash would not be a character in season four.
