For Jetman, all I heard was that the story featured a lot of drama, and what happened to Gai at the end. Other than that, I had no idea what to expect. Gai was definitely my favorite part of the series. I enjoyed watching through it, but after I finished it I didn't really have any strong feelings towards it. I just thought "well, now what?"

My problem with Jetman stems more from these two things:
1. Gai never makes sense. One episode is is all like, "I hate this team thing, I quit!!" But then the next 4 episodes he will be all, "That's it, we will defeat this monster together!!" as if the last episode never happened. 2. Ryu wants nothing to do with Kaori for the entire series, but the moment Maria dies, he wants her. WTF? That was very unfair to both Kaori and Gai. Oh, I also HATE the designs for a lot of the Monsters of the Week, but other than that, I think it is a solid show. |
I think Gai gets so much praise because he is different from any of sentai senshi that we have gotten and haven't gotten anyone like him since. He smoked, drank, cheated, and womanized throughout most of the show (except during his stint with Kaori). People enjoy elements that are completely different and he falls into that category.
I do admit that he lacks consistency in his personality and how he treated the team (especially Ryu). That would have made the show better if Gai was a dick throughout the entire series, but I believe the writers felt it might be too much. And Ohranger's first 8 episodes are phenomenal, but there is a marked change from 9 or 10 forward. I know there was some real-world stuff going on and it mirrored to much of what the show was doing, so they made some changes to the tone of the show. Or maybe that was always their plan, who knows. |
I do agree that if Gai was consistently at odds with Ryu and the team rather than episodes with that as the sole focus, it would be a lot better and more interesting, as the dynamic would truly be different, but it is nice for what we got.
I just think that one aspect gets overly hyped up in comparison to everything else Jetman does have to offer, despite it not appearing as often as some people would have you think. I will never get behind the love triangle because it just didn't work. Gai loved Kaori (And made it openly clear to her), but she just strung him along while harboring a crush on Ryu, who was just obsessed over converting Maria back to the point where he was seemingly oblivious towards her advances. It felt like a time waster (Then factor in that Raita ALSO had a crush on her, goddammit). |

Episode 9 is like turning on another show. The characters are completely different, and it starts to feel a lot more "Sentai," if you know what I mean. |

Gai just didn't feel believable. Wavering on your feelings is one thing, but he went from a complete ass to a perfect team player. He didn't "Grow" at all. He was just a generic Sentai member unless the episode is about him, where he goes back to being a loner. After that episode, he's back to being just another ranger in perfect sync with everyone.

The Ryu/Kaori thing wasn't done very weel. But one could see it Ryu saw comfort in Kaori like he saw in Rie, and after that, he needed someone and started to develop on it. But it still felt rushed and came out of kinda nowhere. |
