With Gokaiger, all I can imagine is a vapid airhead saying "You guys, I'm so totally a pirate!" Gokaiger was so by the books that the only time things got interesting was when Basco was around, and he's just a side villain. Quote:

Gokaiger is the worst place to start in my opinion as it's a hollow, poorly realised nostalgia wank and if you have no investment in the franchise like I did, nothing in the show will mean anything to you.
Also, it wasn't a criticism so much, MMPR Megazord stuff is about as good as mech stuff gets in the show but the suit ain't great. I'd happily take it over the stacking. |
You are one of the few because every one of my friends that has not been into Sentai got interested in other series through Gokaiger.
|
Edit- Whoops my bad.

The Zyuranger mecha were a massive upgrade from the way sentai robos used to be designed and built. Way more went into their production than even the previous season, jetman. But don't let that detract from Jetman. Jet Icarus, Garuda, and Tetra Boy were pretty damn awesome even if they were the classic boxy style. Quote:

Jetman is my all time favourite sentai show but I thought the mech stuff was really boring in that show. |

The Tank aspect is great as well, completely pointless, but it manages to mix up the combat in a way that doesn't make it feel like it's going through the motions in quite the same way as basically...almost every other show. |

Showing off the suits and designs do nothing when the characters in the suits aren't acting a thing like the characters. |

I still think suggesting a series that has it's own story to tell is better than giving the copout anniversary series as a suggestion. |

Shinkenger for example, pacing issues aside, is SO Japanese that the fact they didn't really localise it...like at all...for Samurai is the reason I just don't think the show worked. Other shows, like say DekaRanger, aren't so easy to place as I think the core concepts translated very well to SPD and although SPD isn't my favourite season, seeing all the new stuff they made for that and how they made the show their own without really deviating from the core stories that much at all is fascinating. |
i will probably wait to watch Gokaiger and watch 7-9 shows before watching it.

That is a pretty interesting way for a Power Ranger fan to get into Sentai, though. By watching the Sentai whose PR equivalent kept similar concepts (While Geki and JF have a tenuous connection, the underlying theme of martial arts is still present). |

And if you don't want to start with Gokaiger, go with DaiRanger or KakuRanger. |
I'd say do one of the easiest things around and watch the Sentai which was turned into your favorite season of Power Rangers. Loved Dino Thunder? Watch Abaranger. Get turned on by Timeforce? Watch Timeranger. The point being, just go off and watch the Sentai which made your favorite PR season. This way it's a bit of an easier transition. Plus if you can't find a version of that series with subs, if you've seen that PR season enough, you should have a fairly decent knowledge of what all is going on (best examples I can give are Timeforce/Timeranger, Wild Force/Gaoranger, and Samurai/Shinkenger).

Watched GaoRanger episode 6 last night, the GaoBlack/Wedding focus episode and enjoyed it. He's a fun character alright. I'm enjoying this and hopefully I won't forget it for a Kamen Rider this time lol.
|
I'm watching more of Gobusters. The monster of the day being a Pizza cutter is both laughable and scary.

It was an Anniversary Series that had tribute episodes that celebrated 35 years of Sentai, but it was also a super fun show with a great and solid set of characters outside of cameos and, regardless of Matrixbeast's Gokaiger bashing, the storyline, while not incredibly involved due to the nature of the season, was fun in itself even in the episodes that weren't tributes and every character got a good amount of focus and the show succeeded in being great entertainment and having characters that were interesting enough to care about. The tribute episodes themselves also didn't just sit there wanking up the nostalgia, but always focused more on the main characters growing as heroes. Megaforce's first episode was hollow, poorly realised nostalgia wank. Gokaiger was not. I started with Gokaiger and loved it. I was blown away comparing it to the 19 seasons of Power Rangers I'd seen and its what got me into Sentai in the first place. Even my brother, who doesn't watch either Sentai or Power Rangers unless we're watching it in the room he's in sat down and watched every episode of Gokaiger and loved it and has even re watched the series. I think Gokaiger, due to just how fun the series and characters are, is a pretty good place to start. Gives you an idea of the differences between PR and Sentai without being a gigantic swap. I can understand a PR fan being shocked if they started with Jetman, for example. Quote:

Because the core team were only there to be a gateway to nostalgiawanking, so the characters had no time to be formed, realised or become anything close to compelling. I think I lasted maybe five episodes before I realised I didn't like a single thing about it. But it wasn't made for me, it was made for sentai fans, which is why it shouldn't be the place you start at. Maybe I'd like it if I'd seen more sentai but I'm more of a Power Rangers fan than a Sentai one, so I've not really seen much sentai even still.
|
So wait. Have you even seen the whole show then?

The opening few episodes of every series introduce the world, characters, concepts etc and those are the ones designed to grab you and if they haven't by that point then you may as well move on. There are some examples where I've stuck with it and been pleasantly surprised, most often I'm not and as I'm not a big sentai fan anyway I saw no reason to stick with Gokaiger. |
Now I do agree with Locke that if you aren't enjoying a show that is 50 episodes, you shouldn't force yourself to watch it.
HOWEVER, how many episodes did you watch Locke? Because I always try to give a show at least its first 10-15 episodes (because the first episodes are more to just establish the universe they are in just like in every anime). Now in the case of Gokaiger, the characters do not have the indepth development of those in Jetman, DaiRanger, and GekiRanger, but they are developed and we do learn quite a bit about who they were before they met Marvelous (who also gets development, especially in the Gavan movie), so to say there were only there for fan wanking is completely untrue. They all have their own personalities and backstories, especially Joe and Ahim. Not to mention GokaiSilver is awesome in his annoyingness. |
So after putting it off for months now, I finally watched the Gokaiger/Go-Busters movie. Didn't like it much. For something that should have been a fond send-off to the Gokaigers, they were barely in the damn thing. Instead it was pretty much just a really long and unfocused episode of Go-Busters with some token cameos. :thumbdown
Still, it wasn't as bad as the Magiranger/Dekaranger one. |

Watched the first 2 Go-Busters episodes, and I liked them very much, the story is interesting and seems to be gearing towards "darker and edgier" territory. I have high expectations for this series |
I actually thought the Gokai/Go-Bust movie was one of the better ones in recent times. It was on par with the Go-On vs Geki movie, which was the last enjoyable one (unless you count 199).
|
I agree that the Gokaiger VS Go-Buster movie should've spent a lot more itme on the Gokaigers, but at least it gave us a conclusion to the "The Story Goes On!" ending of Gokaiger. I can rest easy knowing they completely overthrew the Zangyack and didn't get killed! :lol
Although, yeah, it was far more of a Go-Buster movie then a Gokaiger movie. I think they should've made more of an effort with balancing them, which is not a complaint I usually have with VS movies. Also, I didn't really get why the Go-Busters ultimate power was Gokai Changing mecha. |

We just finished watching episodes 25-33 of KakuRanger. I have nothing more to add to my praises outside of how did Nue still have his powers to bring Jiraiya's sensei's daughter back? If he is that powerful, why did he get beaten by the indiividual Kakure Dai Shogun mechs? Anyway, I guess that is it for now. Tomorrow we are taking a break to watch Tiger & Bunny.
|
I'm currently on episode four of Dekaranger, Thirteen of Boukenger, Three of Shinkenger and I recently finished Gokaiger. (And I LOVED it.)
|
Gobusters episode 5, when Ryuji overheated i had my eyes wide open the entire time.
I also thought my headphones were going out when hi's voice was all muffled. Also this thought showed up in my head. What happens if Hiromu sees chicken related food, does it still get a reaction? |
