Winter season's starting up. Most shows I'm watching are already out, only exception being DRRR!!x2. I'm watching Dagashi Kashi too but am sort of waiting to see if an official licensor is actually gonna pick it up or...what.
Anyway, ERASED is definitely the stand out series based off the first episode. Interesting premise and a first episode just packed with content. It looks to be very interesting but we'll see how it goes. Impressive start. On the other hand, Pandora in the Crimson Shell is likely the weakest of what I'm watching. I read the first couple of chapters of the manga (all I could find...) before deciding on watching it. The manga wasn't particularly impressive, and the anime (which more or less covers just those two chapters) certainly isn't, either. Felt something was lost in the adaptation, too...just a couple of the more interesting/funny moments lost their appeal. Animation is lackluster as well. I'm just banking on the possibility of things getting more interesting, because it looks like there could be something interesting lurking under the surface. There likely won't be and I'm stuck with some weird ecchi show. Either way...unimpressive start all in all. Besides those...Divine Gate is ok. Animation isn't quite impressive, character design is very on-the-nose but I don't necessarily mind it. Quite an abundance of hilariously cheesy lines (the water will fill the holes in the ground....BUT IT WONT FILL THE HOLE IN MY HEART) and cliche characters, but eh, I can give it a break. It wasn't a bad start. Assassination Classroom is still Assassination Classroom. It's inoffensive but I don't really care about it. Really hoping this second season can grab my attention more than the first one did (where it really only grabbed me in the last arc, and even then to a limited degree). Oshiete! Galko-chan wasn't really what I expected. All things considered, I expected its humor to go in one or two directions. It did kinda indulge in one (sexual humor) to a small degree, but the real focus in the first episode was toilet humor, and a lot of...toilet talk. It caught me off guard, it's weird, and I...don't really mind it, really. It's just talking about pretty off-kilter stuff in a completely straightforward and uncomfortable manner, and that's not something I see a lot. Anyway, wasn't really funny, but it didn't bore me, which is more than I can say about too many short anime. The art really doesn't disappoint, either. Which is good, because it's the only reason I'm watching this in the first place. Good character design, very colorful all around, and quality is consistent throughout. Really like the way this series looks. Lastly Sekkou Boys, which is nice enough. Funny, weird...not quite as much as I would have expected, but it's only one episode, so I'll give it some time to get weird. Also, was pleased to find that both Galko-chan and Sekkou Boys are ~8 minutes each. I feared I was gonna get stuck with more shitty two-minute (90 second) anime. Those are pretty uniformly terrible, so...happy about that. Anyway, this winter shows some potential. Could all easily end up going to shit, but...am optimistic...Except about Ghost Urn, I guess, if I'm being completely honest. As much as I want to hope that gets better I'm probably hoping against fate. |
Kimera - I bought this anime used for $7 at a local video store today. I never seen this anime before and I thought it could be a fun anime to watch. I was not expecting anything good, but I hoped for something enjoyable. I think I found a vampire anime that would make Diabolik Lovers look good.
The writing is god awful. Nothing in this anime makes no sense. After watching this anime, I still have no idea on what was going on. Our plot is that there some alien vampires that came down to Earth and they want to use some female vampires to make more vampires babies to destroy the human race. It looks like they want this Vampire called "Kimera" to make more vampires. Meanwhile our main human character ends having feelings for Kimera despite not having any real bound with each other whatsoever. There is not a single likable character and no one in this anime was interesting. Kimera has no personality and there is no reason for us to care on what happens to her (or him. This anime is so confusing on the character's gender). Our main villains feel like your typical generic shonen anime bad guys. The anime ends with a cliffhanger for a possible series which never happen. The animation is not very good and could have been much better looking. The fight scenes look awful and the backgrounds are very dull to look at. The music is also forgettable to listen and there was not a single music track that was good. This anime wants to be a sci-fi horror, yaoi, shonen and hentai anime, but fails miserably. If you want a vampire anime then go watch Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D, Blood+ or Darkstalkers. Avoid this anime at all cost. Grade: E |

We watched all 13 episodes to Dangan Ronpa today. My g/f has been a huge fan of the games and anime for the last few years and since she got the BD of teh show, she finally got me to watch it. It was quite good. The first few episodes were okay, but the show got better and did not go into the repetitive nature I was anticipating. In fact, the final episode was down right awesome and Junko is my favorite character of the show followed by Kiri. I can't say I'm a fan of Greg Ayres' Monokuma, since I have heard his voice from the games for a long time, but he still did an excellent job with his lines. Jaime Marchi was absolutely phenomenal as Junko. Hell, the entire voice cast was quite good, but I can definitely see why Bryce is Neagima, as it is the same type of character he plays in every show. Overall though, I enjoyed it and it was nice to see something different come out of a newer show.

Mezzo Forte - I had this on DVD for a while now and never really watch it. I remember hearing about this anime, but never seen it outside of a few random clips. It's from the same people that made Kite and Kite was a anime that I never got into. I saw Kite once in High School after hearing a lot of people love it while I found it rather dull. Mezzo Forte on the other hand was a lot of fun and surprisingly good.
The main characters are great and there is a lot of personality for them. They are all very likable and made me want to see more of them. Kite too itself way too seriously and too drama heavy for a anime that was over the top. Mezzo Forte knew that it was going to be a over the top anime and the anime give us over the top action with funny humor. The animation is solid and the English dub voice cast is pretty good too. Melissa Fahn is great as Mikura. She put in a lot of energy for her character. My biggest issue with this anime is that something didn't make much sense like the connection between Mikura and the main villain. I saw the edited version, so I probably need to check out the uncut version later. Unlike most OVA's, this got a sequel in 2004 called "Mezzo DSA". So I do look forward on watching the anime TV series next. Overall this was a very enjoyable anime and I recommend it for action anime fans. Grade: B |
Well, looks like another bad season overall, only three shows I'm interested in and one of them isn't entirely in the clear yet.
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju was, without a doubt, far and away the best premier this season. It's a very low-key period piece, which is such a refreshing change of pace from everything else. It has such a specific and particular focus, but it manages to be incredibly engaging thanks to its great characters, dialogue, and visuals. I knew nothing about rakugo performance art before watching this, but the portrayal of Yotaro's performance was so well choreographed and the vocalization so well done that it managed to make itself highly engaging even without any sort of background knowledge of the material. The overall aesthetic and style of this show is just fantastic. it really put pretty much everything else to shame. ERASED was excellent as well, very intriguing first episode. It has a strong cast with some interesting dynamics, their interactions felt natural and realistic which was nice. Not much else to say on this really, it was just a really great start. Only other show I watched was Active Raid, it was an okay start but we'll see. Basically I liked the suit designs and it had some cool moments that made it feel like a real, living world instead of just a series of action set pieces. That being said though it could easily fall into the usual dull fare this kind of show almost always ends up as so I'm keeping my expectations low. Couldn't be bothered to watch anything else unfortunately, only a couple of things really stood out as doing something new and creative. Everything else seems to be the usual, tired entries of "fantasy high school harem LN adaptation #7845" or another generic action show with an insufferable self-insert style cool guy protagonist. |
I started The Devil Is a Part-Timer last night and so far it's great. Two episodes in and I'm hook.

Last few shows of the winter are out...Dagashi Kashi is ok. Watching this for the art, and the art is alright. Wish animation was better but oh well. Pretty eccentric lead girl...DRRR!! is still weird. Dimension W didn't really leave much of an impression on me. I guess it has potential, though the setting feels kinda generic. And lastly Koyomimonogatari...seems to be reusing some stuff. Odd but whatever. Fun enough little story, mostly inconsequential but then that's sort of the point.
