I think Jason was the only one who knew about Billy being autistic, so you're exaggerating a bit

I mean, technically the alien yellow ranger died first, then Zordon, but yeah.

Also yeah this movie was fucking awesome and I loved the majority of it. There were a few things I'd have changed, but over all it was great. Also, as a person on the spectrum, it was really awesome to see an autistic super hero done well and not be treated as a joke. Same with Trini's coming out speech.

I still think it would've been better if they got their powers right away, but after one or more of them abuses it, like morphing to scare off a bully or something, Zordon takes them away and forces them to train to be better people if they want them back. It's a little too mushy mystical for me.

I mean, even from the writer's choice, I wouldn't have done that. Now I'm not sure if they deliberately did it- like, "Okay, so we're going to kill the autistic, African American kid- they won't see that coming."- or they thought, "We'll kill Blue off, and that'll bring the rest together."

It's tough to decipher what they were thinking when they decided to specifically kill him.

One thing I can say about Billy: He was the most positive, the most productive, the most friendly, and the most cooperative out of them all- and maybe they killed him because they wanted them to feel bad for losing the 1 member that actually managed to morph- ya know?

Kind of like, "We weren't as good or deserving of the power as he was, and now he's gone.."- that kind of thing.

Maybe that's why they did it.

That might've been their intention with Billy, but have you ever seen those lists, like Top 10 Controversial Movie Mistakes! Lists like that?

I personally won't be surprised if somebody points out what I have at some point in the future. I'm not saying it'll definitely end up on one of those lists, but I won't be surprised if somebody brings it up. Just saying. lol

Mecha fights are, universally, my least favorite part of Sentai/Power Rangers. I think the climax would have felt simultaneously more badass and intimate if the filmmakers hadn't rushed to stuff them into their zords ASAP.

You know, I hadn't thought of that (privilege check -- even I, a mixed race gay dude, can be a victim of privilege sometimes!), and your feelings are totally valid. But here's how I'd counter your argument.

The reason they killed Blue is because he was the character everyone cared about the most. He was the most interesting character, the sweetest character, the character who both the characters in the movie and we as the audience loved the most. And this is by a long shot -- no one else even comes close. He is literally the most important character in the movie, both from an emotional and narrative perspective.

I think we should be celebrating the fact that the black, autistic kid was the most important character in the movie. Ultimately, it's a good thing that the character that everyone cared about the most was the black, autistic kid.

Now, if Billy had stayed dead, I'd be rioting in the streets. As it stand, his death flirts with the "kill your minorities first" trope, but his resurrection ultimately subverts that trope in a cool, progressive way.

So yeah, maybe it's a problem that Billy was the character who died. But it's also really cool that the reason he had to die is because he was the best, most important, and most endearing character in the movie.

Not to mention the Kyuranger adaptation that will be happening around that time.

As someone who doesn't know MMPR, I loved it.

Though I feel that in a way, Jason and Kimberly aren't as interesting as the others. Zack in particular feels like a better flawed 'Red' than Jason does; having to be the leader, the hero, even as he knows his only remaining family lives on borrowed time.

That's harrowing.

Also, anyone got an idea on how the hell they'll use the Dragonzord? Because with how the Zords combined... That was awesome and so much better than any TV show's take on it
