Dekaranger Magiranger Shinkenger Timeranger |
I think I'm going to go with Dekaranger next. I've watched the first two episodes and I'm enjoying it a lot. I know it's supposed to be pretty episodic and lacking in strong villains, but the characters seem like a lot of fun so far. Honestly, the only downside I'm seeing so far is the terrible animatronics on Doggie's head and I'm pretty sure I can live with that.

I watched episode one of Sun Vulcan this morning.
...Wow. I know not to harp on special effects from early 80's Toku (I'm a major Godzilla fan :P), and they're not bad. But there was just something about it that made it a drudge to sit through. That said, I love the suit designs, the characters aren't too bad (VulEagle was kind of boring with a constant serious expression on his face except for one moment where he laughed, VulPanther's eating schtick I can live with, and VulShark got nothing but the narrative telling us what he could do), the fight scenes were decent (There was a lot of punch -> Scene cut -> Enemy getting hit, which I'm not a fan of), the mech was neat (Though it being separate vehicles seemed a little unnecessary), and the monster designs were alright. |
I'm on episode 25 of Liveman and so far I've been powering through to this point. I'm just not feeling this series at all except maybe 2 or 3 episodes. I'm committed for all 49 episodes I just hope this series gets better because these first 24 have been very mediocre for me.

Does watching the opening credits to Sun Vulcan count as watching it??? That tune is catchy FOLLOW THE SUN! CATCH THE SUN! makes me want Sunny D
|
See, I thought Liveman was excellent and took a dip when the other two rangers showed up for their first 10 or so episodes.

Finished Dekaranger after starting it at the end of December, now watching Zyuranger and trying to get caught up with the weekly releases. Currently on episode 7

I just got up to the point in Dekaranger where we first see DekaMaster. I am really loving this show and all the great characters. Even the episodes I think I'll hate - like Umeko and the giant alien baby - still end up being really fun and enjoyable.
|
Eh, you are getting to the point of the show where I felt it dropped down in quallity A LOT.

Just finished episode 17 of Dekaranger - possibly the biggest "what the hell am I watching?" episode of a Sentai I've ever seen. Umeko pretending to be Jasmine, the guys almost getting fried into gyoza, Umeko getting blind drunk to fight, Doggie driving PatSignal while telling the viewers never to drink and drive, the new ending with the girls singing a crappy J-Pop song in a series of vaguely fetishistic costumes...
God damn, I love this show. :thumb: |
Just started watching Sun Vulcan. I'm only one episode in, but I enjoyed it much more than I was expecting too. If I can get over the excessive jump cuts and repeated scenes from different angles, I think I'm really going to like this show.
|
I do not know why, but I have a problem really focusing on the Sentai series that are 25 minutes long. I mean, everything from Bioman on, I can pretty much sit through without an issue, but everything before (especially Dynaman) seems to be hard and I do not know why.
|
I'm watching Double at the moment. I'll probably go onto Amazon or Kuuga after that.
I lost interest with Liveman after the other two rangers were introduced, but I'll finish it at some point. I'll probably start Zyuranger too, if the episodes are actually being released at a steady pace. |
Hello all, I am a newb here but not to the world of Japanese awesomeness. Been a Toho fan (Godzilla) forever. As for Power Rangers I loved MMPR. While I knew that the American versions of Power Rangers were just original Super Sentai shows redone, I had never actually watched a Japanese Super Sentai show. The last American show I watched was ZEO. Now I am back to get my fix.
With that said I just got GoKaiger with all English subs and started watching it last night. I like it so far, especially the way they integrate the swords with the guns. The fact that they can change into any of the previous Rangers is the reason why I decided to make this my first viewing of a Japanese Sentai show. I am also currently watching Spectreman (I know, hard to watch sometimes) but its bad in a good way lol. |
You may want to check out GekiRanger next. It's a really good Sentai ^^

Okay I've watched the first 10 episodes of Sun Vulcan now and I'm a lot more mixed on it now. There are lots of elements that are good in it, but some flaws (one particularly glaring) that are really bothering me.
The good: * The villains: I really like machine empires, so Black Magma was off to a good start. Hell Saturn is a great villain design, and I think its pretty cool they resurrected the Denziman villain as a subordinate. * Sun Vulcan Robo is really cool, even if the fact its made up of two components is completely pointless (no matter how you look at it, Bull Vulcan is a pair of legs on wheels) * The Sun Vulcan costumes, while simple, have a really nice helmet motif (even if every so often you can see a person's head behind the visor, but it was the 80s so I'll let it slide) The bad: * The fights are horribly repetitive, even for Sentai standards. Once the team have done their henshin pose (if you can call it that because the team practically never henshin onscreen) its the same fight formula until the end of the episode. * The talking dog. * And my biggest issue with the series - the main characters have practically no personality out of being "by the books super heroes". The ONLY thing I've learnt about the characters so far is that Vul Panther eats a lot of curry, and I knew that a quarter of a way into the first episode. I know more about the commander than I do about any of the Sun Vulcan team. Isn't Sun Vulcan considered to be one the best Showa era series? And if that's the case, it worries me what the other ones must be like. |
Alex, GekiRanger and DaiRanger are two of the best series fully subbed right now.

Speaking of, has Kakuranger been subbed in full? |
No, I think only the first 3 episodes have been subbed thus far.

I watched all the Grown Ups in Spandex releases for Jetman so far (thanks in large part to Akibaranger), and I'm actually really enjoying it. The most recent episode, not so much, but otherwise, it's a lot of fun.
Also, there's something about seeing all the mecha stuff done entirely with miniatures and optical composting that I just love. Probably nostalgia for the Showa Godzilla stuff. Downloading Liveman now, since I know Amemiya was heavily involved with it. |
Finally about to finish Boukenger after having started it a long time ago. The final stretch is painfully slow and boring right now though. After the Lumeria/Natsuki arc in the late 30's the 40's have been mainly boring one-off adventures. Really looking forward to it picking back up before the climax though.

Re-downloaded Gekiranger.
Just watched the first two eps ^^ |

I'm still really enjoying Dekaranger, but I decided to give Magiranger a shot, too. I always liked Mystic Force and Magiranger came out in 2005 - the year of Garo and Hibiki, one of the best years ever for tokusatsu in my opinion. Magiranger, though... I don't know. I wasn't completely turned off from it, but I wasn't really impressed, either. Honestly, it just kept bugging me how their mom just out of the blue says "So yeah, magic exists. Here are your cloaks and Magiphones. Go fight evil." And somehow they automatically know how to transform and use both their weapons and attack spells. I know that's typical Sentai logic, but for some reason it really grates on me here. I'll probably try a few more episodes, but for now I'm going to stick with focusing on Dekaranger.

Hit episode 36 of Gekiranger
This series is really fun, but it's biggest annoyances with me is Jan's refusal to drop his weird ass talk and the mecha. Every time I see GekiTouja or GekiFire I'm just reminded how much I dislike them. That aside, I forgot that Ran was actually designated leader :lol. |

Switch, it is really the villians that makes MagiRanger good (and that is mostly due to the Lovecraft influences). The rangers themselves are awful, especially pink and green.
Tell me this does not resemble N-Ma: http://www.rpgcollecting.com/call-of...thulhu-5th.jpg |
Okay, I just watched episode 23 of Sun Vulcan. I know the show is dated somewhat, but I expected the Vul Eagle changeover to be a bit more than;
"NASA called. Go to space." "LOL KAY" "This new guy who turned up 30 seconds ago, he's now Vul Eagle" *everybody cheers* That being said, Vul Eagle 2 already comes across as being far more charismatic than his predecessor. |

Finished Gekiranger ^^
Actually finished this time, not stopping around ep 30 or so like last time lol. Rinki Gaisou (And I totally want a Kurojishi Lio Figuart now :lol) |

If you don't mind of course, I'd suggest waiting until at least Magishine shows up to see if you'll enjoy it. The series is made up of three acts, with each act being much more interesting than the last. I know Magiranger didn't intrigue me in the first few episodes but it gradually won me over and by the end I was (pun-intended) spell-bound. |
