Been watching RPM since Netflix came here. Australians, you have Power Rangers on Netflix!
Anyway, it's still one of the best Toku shows, maybe even the best, that I've watched. Though rewatching it there are some awkward scenes. The Koichi Sakamoto fight scenes tend to use a little too much shaky cam and plenty of dutch angles. This makes it hard to follow. Other than that, it's been great so far. Dr K is easily the best character of the bunch. |
I have finished RPM, and it was a blast to watch. But my current experience differs in some ways from how I remembered it.
Firstly, I have grown to absolutely adore Gem and Gemma, and I feel that the series really didn't make enough use of them. They each had only one focus episode, and they shared it with another Ranger. Ziggy dropped down my list of RPM favourites hard. I found him funny last time, but now I feel that a lot of his jokes were uncomfortable and some were even quite shocking. He's not a terrible character, and he has heart, but he's just not as likable as I remember him being. I am still extremely impressed by the use of Go-onger footage for this show. It's just insane how they took a light-hearted, interdimensional series and made it into a post-apocalyptic story. Very clever. Overall, still excellent, and I love it now as I did then. :) Now moving on to Dino Thunder, this series has some real potential. |
I've started watching RPM, after seeing so many good reviews about it. At 15 episodes in, I must say I'm not disappointed, it is actually alot of fun. Glad I skipped over OO and Jungle Fury.

I recommend having a look at Jungle Fury if you ever run out of things to watch. It's not a bad show in its own right. |
Well I finally finished season 1 to MMPR and started Season 2. The Venus Island episode is hands down one of the worst episodes of the entire series from a production stand point. There just seems to be a huge lack of energy in the first half and clearly this is when things started to go awry with the cast because there is no dialog for Jason or Zack during the second half of the episode even though the make motions as if they are speaking.
|
Just recently started to rw-watch Megaforce so I can finally get around to seeing all of it and then all of Super Megaforce. I'm through the first two volumes, so eight episodes in. I just need to wait for the library to get volume 3 in for me and I'll be able to get through the rest of it and almost all of SM.
After this I'm thingking about going through Lightspeed Rescue. Watched the first couple of episodes online, and man did I forget how much I loved this series back in the day. I'm half tempted to go over and di through the attic of my parents house to see if the train megazord I had back in the day is still around. |
Well I just finished Season 2 and man I forgot how bad the editing on the monster fights are. Not to mention that none of the time travel (or reversing time) plots make any lick of sense whatsoever. So they can't transform in the 1700s because they haven't met Zordon yet but Kimberley can still transform in 1880 even though she hasn't met Zordon yet, what? Plus, it seems like Jason, Zack, and Trini stopped existing after they left because Rocky, Adam, and Aisha are suddenly treated as if they have all been friends for years (especially Kimberley and Aisha). Nevertheless, it does have some really enjoyable episodes and moments to be found and Zedd is such an awesome villain.
|
I finished Megaforce and I've watched as much of Super Megaforce as I can (just one last DVD release left). I've enjoyed SM as much as I did Megaforce. Though I have to admit, the "super mega win" stuff got on my nerves... "mega win" was bad enough as it was... Oh, and what was going on with Troy there towards they end? He's got super powers now?
Though like I said, I did enjoy the season. All that's left is one more normal episode and then the Legendary Battle. I really liked the inclusion of the Dairanger suits. Kinda makes me wish they had actually used those suits back durring MMPR season 2. |

I don't understand why people say they nerfed him for the kids. I was a kid and I thought he was the best villain since Galvatron.

back in the day, Zedd was scary as hell.
a skinless armored man with a really angry sounding voice and a snake slithering all over him? also, I loved the goofier Zedd near the end. |
Lord Zedd look was cool and menacing with that husky voice. For an original power rangers villain , he was awesome and the first monster he created destroyed the dinozords. What a way to make an impact.

So I'm halfway through Zeo and wow, I haven't see a lot of these episodes since they first aired, but man, are some of them bad. THe ones with the cactus brothers and the Tanya being scooped for her singing voice are some of the worst episodes in the entire franchise. The plot is so full of holes (one of the episodes I just watched had Mondo and Machina state that Sprocket is the first child they built, WTF?), so many conveniences, and plotlines that were pointless. Like the whole Arrowhead one.
They spent 4 episodes on that thing, and then the plot is wrapped up without any actual resolution to it. Tommy just tricks Mondo into looking away and he grabs it with ease. What the hell? Why even bother? Oh, and David is never mentioned again. Anyway, I just got to the introduction to the Gold Ranger, which once again started all of this mystery that will lead into another major letdown. |
Finished Zeo today.
|
I was never a big fan of Zeo. Despite the praise it gets, I just never saw where it came from. The machine empire, while interesting at first, just doesn't have the same charm as Zedd and Rita and tends to slide into "Meh" territory for me. The rangers are their same old selves, not bad, but not spectacularly good, either. Tommy as leader didn't really feel like that big of an achievement considering he was basically leading the team when Rocky became Dino Red, and the plots contained with Zeo kind of stopped being interesting after the premiere.
I liked Jason's return as Zeo Gold, and I liked the idea of Trey and the powers rejecting Jason after so long, but they were handled rather poorly (If my memory serves). And, ultimately, I felt Zeo just didn't tell enough interesting stories to keep me super invested. It lacked the so bad it's good charm of MMPR, and the humor and insanity of Turbo, so I never could see why Zeo was always helmed as top 3 along, In Space and RPM, amongst fans. |
Yeah, I loved Zeo as a kid, but honestly, in the end, it was not that great of a series. I used to think it was better than Ohranger, but now that I have been watching both series pretty much back to back, Ohranger, despite all of its lacklusterness, is the better series.
The Arrowhead plotline was pointless. Tommy's brother was pointless and showed up for one episode after the arrowhead arc. Then you had this bait and switch crap for who the identity of the gold ranger was. Oh, and both series are so poorly paced as far as mecha goes. They get the Super Zero Megazord, Auric, and Warrior Wheel all in the span of like 4 episodes. WTF people? Lastly, it seemed like they only used 20 episodes worth of the Machine Empire footage and just kept reusing the same scenes over and over again for all 50 episodes. The building of Kat and Tommy's relationship and the King for a Day arc are the highlights of the season. Although, I do like the final episode, none of it makes any sense the moment you watch the Turbo movie because nothing that happened matters. Zedd and Rita just retire. The rangers trade in their powers. Jason acts like he hasn't seen his friends in years. Bulk, Skull, and Stone are back with the police force and nothing is ever mentioned about Bulk and Skull taking the job in Paris. Finally, nothing is ever said about the machine empire as if they never existed. |
I was in that same boat, don't worry. As a kid, I loved Zeo, but when I rewatched it, I found it severely lacking. Like I said, it just sat so deep in the middle of mediocrity that it just didn't feel like there was really anything notable about it. The story felt so dull, the ending didn't feel as grand (If I recall, Zedd and Rita destroy the king and queen of the Machine Empire), and there just wasn't enough to keep me gripped.
It's actually why I found Turbo so enjoyable. Despite Linkara leading the fandom to believe Turbo is the worst series ever, it's zanity and not taking things so seriously led it to be an infinitely more enjoyable series. |
I dont know why but I started watching Megaforce. Oh boy what did I get myself into? I dont think I have ever seen a tokusatsu that is this awkward. The actors are extremely unconvincing in anything they do. They dont fit the High School setting, dont even remotely act like real teenagers do and even those that are decent actors deliver there lines so, well, awkward.
The "story" is just beyond lazy and the villains are a bunch of idiots. Creepox encountered Troy and wanted to fight him. Troy said no so Creepox...left. He just left without doing anything. And what is the other villains response? They think the humans cant be beaten that easily because they refused to fight. That is so incredibly stupid that it hurts. And the rest? The action part of the show? Well it sucks. The action scenes are cool to look at but the show doesnt mix them well with the US Footage. The dubbing is awkward as hell and you never have the impression that someone is actually talking. You just get some disembodied voices over japanese stock footage. Speaking of stock footage. They dont handle it well at all. Unnecessary cuts that make the scene extremely confusing and hard to follow and big big biiiiig continuity errors. And I dont mean the usual stuff were they jump from location to location. In episode 3 the destroy the monster with their combined weapon and it explodes. All good. Then they go to a different location. The villains make the monster grow. And in the scene where its growing the Rangers are magically back to that spot in front of the monster holding their combined weapon. I mean WHAT?! Did they really think this would work and nobody would notice? Its just so amateurish how they handle this show. Hell even I could do better than this and I suck at editing. |
Up to episode 12 of Megaforce and it hasnt improved one bit. The problems are still all there. Robo Knight is boring as hell and his constant "saving the earths environment" doesnt sound nearly as cool as they might have thought. Only thing I like about him is that he sounds like an extremely bored Peter Weller :lol
The Mutants are just as boring as the Aliens. The way they came into the show was also pretty lazy and terrible. Vrak just found them and there they where. Its just so anitclimactic like pretty much everything in the show. Things just happen. |
You know, that Episode 3 moment was when I quit the show. :lol Which was a shame, since I would have given it more of a chance.
|
Oh yeah that was pretty terrible :lol
I´m just watching it only to see how lazy the show will get. :lol |

I was still pretty entertained by the show until Episode 3's moment. I just ... that moment just punched me in the face. :lol I mean, Power Rangers has never been seamlessly perfect; the odd Japanese sign appears here and there, the Rangers are in the quarry one moment and in the city the next. Even RPM had some weird changes of scenery. But all that is excusable, it is simply the editors trying their best to work with what they've got. But that moment. That was a sign of apathy. I just couldn't wrap my head around it, because it's not even some aesthetic consistency. It's not like in In Space when suddenly video game elements appear out of nowhere. That's fine, it's the limitations of the footage. This one was a clear cut error that could EASILY have been fixed. I tried long and hard to reconcile those two scenes. I just couldn't explain it away. So when episode 4 came about ... I just wasn't that interested in watching anymore. |
And the weird change of scenerey is just problem in toku in general but its a very minor one. Continuity errors like that in episode 3 or something that constantly happens in megaforce is that the scenery around them changes without them even moving. They didnt even try to find locations to shoot that fit the ones seen in the source material.
|
Highly disappointing. I mean a little bit of effort could really do wonders. In one of the earlier Dino Charge episodes they had a concurrent battle in the city and in a quarry. Seems like a weird scenery change, but a scene was added later to show that the quarry was in the city limits so it would make sense. That really impressed me, because even if it wasn't the best way to handle it, they at least tried.
Well, I still intend to watch Megaforce one day. :lol |
Actually watching Megaforce now makes me that much more impressed with how much they improved on Dino Charge. Dino Charge is taking pretty much everything that went wrong with this Show and does it right. The only episode in Dino Charge I wasnt really happy with was nine. The ending fight in that episode was pretty anticlimactic.

Its not a huge deal and I can easily see people not taking an issue with that. The problem with that episode is that its a character focused episode but big fight against the monster goes to a completely different ranger who only had a minor part in the episode. So you never get the proper fight scene the episode is building to.

Okay I just reached a new lowpoint in Megaforce. Vrak and the leader of the Aliens are talking and he says that Vrak never smiles...
His mask has a permanent smile!! http://www.megaforcecast.com/gallery...k1-1_28329.jpg |

So five episodes left of Megaforce. You know I think it was a really bad move to take two shows and smash them into one. because of that nothing in this show has any impact. Getting a new weapon or a new Zord isnt special at all because they get them like every episode. Every introduction lacks the proper build up since it happens so incredibly fast. Its just a thing that happens at this point and its boring as hell.
Oh and I wished they would decide on their damn roll call already. I hate that its so inconsistent in the way they handle it. |
To be fair, Goseiger pulled that, too. There were stretches of 10 episodes where they'd get a new weapon or header each episode.
|
Not saying Goseiger didnt have it. Its just much more harder to accept when a Toyline that was spread out over 35 episodes or so is introduced in the span of 15.

The latest show I finished was Dino Thunder. Spoiler warning for those who haven't watched it.
Dino Thunder is often heralded as one of the better Power Rangers seasons so I was quite eager to see it for myself. Overall, I have to say that I liked it, but I wouldn't rank it among my top seasons. I think there were elements that I think are brilliantly done. I enjoy how the season seems to focus more on the high school part than any other Power Rangers series I've seen yet, despite many other seasons being based in high school. They also decided to switch it around a little bit by making the team a bickering, G-rated Breakfast Club bunch, which I think works well. Each of the Rangers has a distinct personality, and their interactions were fun to watch. I particularly enjoy Trent's character. His internal conflict is intriguing, and I think it was a nice twist that the "evil Ranger" character this time is actually a pretty well-meaning kid. Tommy was a nice guy too, but the conflict between his good and dark side wasn't quite as balanced or as pronounced as Trent. Finally, Mesogog and his human counterpart Anton Mercer are both fantastic. Mesogog has a wicked cool design and he's very menacing. It's also a nice touch that the required many failures of the villain are instead mostly attributed to his henchmen's incompetence, rather than being his own creations. However, where Dino Thunder gets things so right, it also gets some things wrong, at least in my opinion. Because it really tries to play up the edgy high school theme, the writing oscillates between being brilliant and sometimes just not great. There are some quips or sarcastic remarks between the Rangers that feel a bit forced, such as when Conner remarks on how he likes girls that smell nice. *yech* The other aspect of the writing I'm not so fond of is with Tommy. Aside from the nostalgia factor, Tommy isn't really utilised very well. Yes, he's absent for a large part of the season (and I actually preferred him when he was stuck in-suit) but he has great potential as a legendary Ranger mentor and as a teacher. Both sides are underutilised, and he never does anything particularly mentor-ly despite his role. Hayley acts as the better mentor. Plus, he makes some very bad, un-Ranger-like decisions and never gets called out on it! Genetically engineered mutant creatures? Being so willing to kill a former human colleague? This talk of Tommy brings me to my least favourite aspect of the writing: how they treat Trent. I get that they're trying to play up the "evil Ranger" factor, but when a large part of what happens to Trent isn't his fault, why is everyone so repeatedly against him? Conner, I might understand, given his occasional immaturity, but Tommy was distrusting a number of times too. Given that he was a Ranger with so many years of experience, you'd think he knew better than to jump to conclusions. And finally, I think the worst offender in Dino Thunder is actually the Ranger aspects. I don't think the Ranger part of Dino Thunder meshes very well with the out-of-suit sections, and they feel a bit jarring, kind of like MMPR. The battles also start to get very repetitive (Tommy and Zeltrax?), and they feel strained in such a way that you can tell they're struggling to accommodate the Abaranger footage. I can say that I didn't enjoy watching the Ranger scenes that much, and I think that's the worst thing a Power Rangers season can do. Anyway, if all this sounds that negative, it isn't really too bad. It's a fun season for what it is, and the out-of-Ranger scenes are rather good. It's not a terrible series by any means, it's just that my experience was hampered by a few of what I perceived to be its flaws. |
I'm going to be starting it back up soon, but I'm in the process of re-watching MMPR for the second time. I believe I'm only a few episodes past 'Doomsday' two-part episode. Mighty Morphin' is super nostalgic, and I can't but think about my childhood each and every I pop it into the DVD player.

Almost finished with my SPD marathon (just passed "Reflections"). It still holds up as one of the better Disney-era seasons, and a pretty fine show in its own right.
