I haven't really noticed any bad animation. But then, I've been too busy reading the subtitles to really notice animation errors.

If this was adapting S or Super S I could understand because they actually were significantly different from the manga, but the Dark Kingdom arc has been done better then the manga twice (PGSM and the Anime) so I'm a little bored with Crystal so far. |
So I just finished the Sailor Moon manga and it was a pretty great ride. I was pleasently surprised by the material and that it has some really good quality stories and character stuff in it. The Book had a rough start but after the midway point of the Dark Kingdom Arc the title really picked up and got better and better with every chapter. Even the romance didnt bother me at all once we were past the initial plot of Usagi and Mamoru falling in love.
And now I dont have giant quastion marks over my head once Suzu starts talking about all this stuff :lol |

I still have a very real dislike of the manga. The Dark Kingdom Arc was just so badly written that it left a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of the read. I cannot believe crap like Tuxedo Mask coming into her room and taking her to the battle followed with a big "shocking reveal" that he knew Usagi was Sailor Moon the next chapter got past the editors. Plus Usagi's world destroying weakness and selfishness in the fight against Metalia was just too awful to comprehend. Stars was also pretty "meh", not because it was necessarily badly written (although I would argue it wasn't fantastic) but because it was so bleak and everything was glossed over so quickly that the ending wasn't anywhere near satisfactory. Special S was the only time I really thought the manga had a better story then the anime and even then you had to sacrifice all the character development of the villains to get there.
I'm really hoping Crystal starts to goes away from the manga, starting next episode. Its slowly showing signs that it'll be going in its own direction, which I think is nothing but a good thing. It'd be ironic that the lyrics of the opening talk about "not needing to have a prince" and they keep in Sailor Moon committing suicide because she couldn't bear to fight on and save the world without her prince. Usagi is a phenomenally stronger character in the anime and PGSM compared to her manga counterpart. Quote:

I'm currently rereading the manga for the first time in years and yeah, I will agree that the Dark Kingdom arc is terrible. I'm at the chapter when Pluto first appears as I've been taking my time with it since right now I'm more into reading Dragonball since I'm reading that for the very first time.
I know we have had our debates on the manga vs the anime before, but I will say this; man, Naoko couldn't write a villain for jack****. NEvertheless, I want Crystal to remain faithful to the manga. I just hope they decided not to kill Nephrite and Jadeite because it would be redundant to bring them back in the later arc just to have them die again 3 seconds later (when they are transformed into their stones). |

Forgive my ignorance, I'm not a Dragon Ball fan, I thought Kai was just a HD re-release? Was it a straight manga adaption?

I wish they would just do an entirely brand new adaptation of DB in anime form. I bet they could do all 42 volumes of the manga within 150-200 episodes.
Oh, and there are a lot of things different from the manga. Pilaf does not appear until like Chapter 19 of the manga. For Z, most of the training during the year before Vegeta and Nappa arrive is filler in the anime. Goku does not fall off Snake Way. He does not meet the snake princess. In fact, the manga just really jumps to when he gets there after six months. Gregory is an anime only character. Nappa does not attack the news or military. Bulma never gets her body switched with Frog Ginyu. In fact, you could say that they ere doing one episode per manga chapter in the show, so five minutes of an episode was actually the manga material while the remaining 17 minutes was filler. |

What I enjoyed most about the manga was the whole world building spect. I found the whole Sailor Moon universe extremely intresting and there was alot of cool stuff that I could latch onto. Naoko had great ideas but often had trouble executing them or give them enough time to develop. Like the whole Black Moon rebellion. I love the whole idea behind the black moon clan and them refusing to live by the rules of the silver millenium and there forced immortality. I really would love to see them digging much deeper into that idea once they get around to that story arc in crystal. |
The thing with Naoko's villains is: She sure isn't good at writing them, but luckily, her ideas can be executed very well if someone else writes the scripts. I loved the way the toku presented the manga-villains and as for Beryl herself and most of the villains who followed, the musicals also did a great job on them. I think Sailor Moon is the most fun and interesting if you deal with as many variations of the story as possible, because it sure gives you a very round perspective of the characters. I still wonder how far from the manga crystal will go, but I'm sure the changes they make will be positive as Naoko can finally add the things she couldn't do in the manga (Shitennou/Senshi-relationships, Endymion/Pluto, maybe more about Galaxy Cauldron...).
And hey, it can't be as bad as the old anime... xD |

Well I have to agree with kain. And in S and stars more he k I even preferred the german dub over the original English dub cause that german was what I saw first and german dub for me was only place that I remembered stars from.

Super S was definitely the dark days of Sailor Moon, but I can forgive one out of 5/6 seasons. |

http://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ll...ckddo1_500.png http://33.media.tumblr.com/3d61e7246...ckddo1_500.png The old anime is bad. Period. The writing is horrible, the characters are annoying and most of the animation is just... I don't even have words for it. It sure did have some very good moments, but those were extremely rare. Out of every Sailor Moon adaption, the 90's anime is by far the weakest and also the one that goes furthest away from what Naoko Takeuchi actually wanted Sailor Moon to be. If that is how you want to see Sailor Moon and you can put up with the many flaws, that's great for you. But I can't accept the 90's animes flaws. For me, Sailor Moon is the manga, the musicals, and the toku. And Crystal, of course (btw. episode 5 was wonderful, I totally loved it). As for the dubbing thing: From what I heard, the new English dub is kinda good. Not perfect acting-wise, but much better than the old one and the voices fit the characters very well. As for other dubs: I liked the Japanese dub the most, because the acting was amazing. The german dub had some major flaws, not only the translation (that is cheesy as hell), but also the choice of VAs (only a few of them sound right) and the acting- when the second studio took over and replaced some of the VAs, the acting quality went down the hill. Which is a pity because these days, most of the Sailor Moon VAs are pretty good. And very nice people. Dominik Auer, the second voice of Tux, has already recorded some stuff to promote our page and next week, I'll finally get the chance to get to know Sabine Bohlmann (first Moon) and Ulrike Jenni (Neptune) better. From what I heard, they are really likeable. (Btw. R.I.P. Veronika Neugebauer, Jupiter's VA. She died a while ago... *sniff*) |

As for Naoko's "vision". Whatever. It managed to improve a lot of the stories Naoko wrote. Dark Kingdom was a badly written wreck. That's a fact. Naoko couldn't get her own story straight between chapters and everything was just rushed and awful. You claim the anime had bad writing? Reread any three chapters of the Dark Kingdom arc and ATTEMPT to defend Naoko's shitty writing. Wether it be huge continuity errors, incomprehensible or lazy plot-points, terribly done action scenes that make barely any sense, horribly misused and wasted characters, rushed or glossed over storylines or random powers that are left unexplained and never mentioned again or awful, selfish characters that were still celebrated as if they were saints by the other characters the Dark Kingdom arc had them all. R through to Super S was a marked improvement (ignoring some niggles) and then Stars was back to being a rushed, convoluted mess once again with an awful, awful rushed ending that had no conclusion or satisfaction whatsoever. Art-wise, Naoko was able to draw beautifully. Sometimes. She has to have some of the worst drawn hands I have ever seen and her action scenes, which in a super hero comic are pretty darn important, were just incomprehensible trash that never improved. And that's when she wasn't just writing "Sailor Moon shows up. Panel of her using her attack. Panel of villain exploding." Sorry, but the manga had far more flaws then the anime. If you can put up with it, that's good for you. Naoko had some great ideas and should be respected for being the foundation of the franchise, but it took the better writers of the anime, musicals and eventually the LA to make those ideas work. Especially when in comes to the Dark Kingdom aka the plot lines that most people remember the most when it comes to Sailor Moon. Prior to R, Naoko was practically writing a skeleton for better writers to swoop in and flesh out. It is painfully obvious Sailor Moon was made specifically for the TV adaption during that first arc. |

The standard I'm comparing it to is the mid to late 90's/early 2000's standard because most of the series I've watched are from that exact time. So how is it wrong to compare animes around that age to another anime that's only slightly older? I'm comparing the animation to something like Detective Conan- that show is just 4 years younger and looks waaay better than Sailor Moon. Even Dragonball Z, which is a tad older than Sailor Moon looks better overall. |
Finally caught up with Sailor Moon Crystal!
...Ugh. OK. The good: the animation is definitely better then the previous couple of episodes. There is still the stupid scene where Sailor V saves Mamoru and Usagi in which from behind she's in her Sailor V suit and from the front she's in her Sailor Venus suit, but while whoever did that is beyond stupid, its not massive. The animation is a lot prettier, although I'm not a huge fan of the "sets" they draw. Everything seems so vast and empty. Just look at the place where they fight Zoisite the second time. What kind of park is just a single tree and then cement tiles as far as the eyes can see? Its a bit bizarre. Everything looks beautiful, but sometimes I really think beauty is the only thing that Crystal has going for it so far. The bad: Naoko's shitty writing is faithfully taken into Crystal. I'm just incredibly annoyed at this BS. I can't believe nobody was reading the Manga (including Naoko herselft) and thought "Hold the phone. This makes absolutely no fucking sense". So, in Episode 5, Tuxedo Mask appears in Usagi's bedroom. He wakes her up and takes her to where Nephrite is attacking Mako. We even have Luna see the entire thing. Hell, we have Luna and Usagi both comment on it. Now we have Episode 6 Tuxedo Mask and Usagi have a conversation about leadership and their responsibilities in which it is plain as fucking day that Tuxedo Mask knows Usagi is Sailor Moon and that Usagi is aware of that fact. But you know, she'd already know that because he woke her up and took her to the battle just last episode. So they have their conversation about whether or not Tuxedo Mask is a villain and whether or not Usagi can lead the other Soldiers and then Usagi is informed by Luna she's needed in which *sigh* Usagi is worried because she can't transform in front of Tuxedo Mask because that would reveal to him that she's Sailor Moon. You know, because apparently Usagi and the writers have short term memory loss or something. But then. WHAT A TWIST! Tuxedo Mask reveals, to Usagi's shock, that he already knows she's Sailor Moon! OMG! No. Just fucking no. This awful, awful plot hole was not OK back when Naoko wrote it in the manga and its even less OK 20 Years Later. Its just unforgivably awful writing. Then we have super brave dependable Sailor Moon against Zoisite. She arrives and within seconds Zoisite grabs her, in which she immediately defaults into praying for Tuxedo Mask to arrive and save her. Wait. What was that lyric in this show's opening theme song? "Ah, even for girls, certain pride can't be given up-- the determination to not put their fates in princes' hands, but to fight for themselves." Hm. The opening implies much better characters then are actually in the series. At least Mars, Jupiter and Mercury had the sense to at least try and attack Zoisite (although Thank God Mars and Juptier's attacks failed because they would've killed Moon as well!) before, for the second episode in a row, being very quickly taken out. I swear, the second Usagi commits suicide because she's selfish and useless and because Naoko is so ignorant that she thinks girls who literally won't live without their boyfriends is romantic I'm done with this series. I was so hoping they'd improve from the awful Manga Dark Kingdom, but its really becoming apparent they have zero intention to. (Also, I was really bored by the fact that Zoisite used the exact same plan two episodes in a row. Come on, guys.) |
Yeah that plot hole really was awful, I remember watching it and thinking "wait, wasn't all this established episodes ago?".
I agree on the general art direction too. It's certainly pretty, but it all feels so empty and hollow at the same time. Crystal in general is proving to be a really odd series because I'm not disliking it by any means but I just don't seem to be able to get fully into it. If anything it's just making me want to check out the original more, because that just looks like it just has so much more life to it. |
Coming from press conference after press conference where they kept on stating crystal would follow manga more. At the same time sailor moon fandom in Japan was more aimed at the females and it was them that got manga popular to get adapted in to anime in the first place.

And, yes, they said it would be more faithful to the manga, but that shouldn't have been a bad thing. Massive plot holes and bad story-telling should not be adapted straight, especially not 20 years after its been written. All they had to do was cut Usagi's little "omg omg then he'll KNOW!" and her shock at him knowing despite it being clearly established that he knew. Nothing about the story would change except that the scene would make sense. And they have been changing things! Jadeite, Zoisite, Nephrite and Kunzite were never at the same place together, Beryl never appeared in front of the Sailor Soldiers until the very end of the arc and by this point in the manga Jadeite had been killed (by Mars), Nephrite had been killed (by Jupiter) and Zoisite had been killed (by Sailor V), so why, why couldn't this plot-hole have been cut? And yeah, at the end of the Dark Kingdom Arc in the manga Mamoru dies so Usagi decides to plunge a sword through her stomach rather then save the world from Queen Metalia. Of course she gets better because the Crystal keeps her alive, but that was a side-effect that she didn't know about. Usagi herself fully intended to just commit suicide and let the world be destroyed while her friends howled for her to stop because her boyfriend was killed. I have been praying that this scene would be fixed in Crystal, especially with things like the opening claiming they "won't leave destiny to their prince" and the "Moon Pride" film clip featuring a Serenity obviously in mourning standing up in determination and fighting, but with every episode that awful, awful ending being fixed gets less and less likely. |

But still, the anime was way, way, way more popular then the manga. In fact, the manga only continued beyond the Dark Kingdom Arc because the anime requested more material. But... I don't understand what popularity has to do with anything or why you're bringing it up. |
So been reading the manga for the first time I read online the minor changes they did. Buti did not expect usagi past life on the moon she killed her self due to Endymion and I am really enjoying g. I can wait and see what On my way! Next

So the new Sailor Moon Crystal has been out for a week. I find it depressing that I haven't watched it yet because the last few episodes have sucked so much I'm betting this one will suck too.
On a more positive note, my Proplica Cutie Moon Rod arrived! Its really quite awesome, although I actually thought the end was a lot bigger on the show. Watching scenes, I'm thinking it may just be because she pointed it straight at the camera so often. One complaint though, the handle part is freaking fragile. Its hollow and light and all the weight of the electronics and batteries is straight in the Moon at the top. You won't be swinging it around like she does in the anime without the end snapping right off. Also loved the "WARNING! CHROME MAY RUB OFF" in the instructions. That really made me confident, especially considering you have to pull apart the big chrome ball at the end to get to the batteries and on/off switch! Attachment 24558 Holding it like this and swinging it is a death warrant for your toy. There's no way that if you swing it by holding on the end like she does the end won't snap right off and go flying! I'm loving the Proplica line though! I know the Moon Stick sold really well so I'm hoping this does equally good! I want my Spiral Heart Rod and Eternal Tiare! The Cutie Moon Rod has a special place in my heart though! I remember when I was a little kid and Sailor Moon was on Fox Kids and Mum said I could choose a toy to buy and I decided on Bandai's Moon Sceptre and my Mum said it was the girliest thing she had ever seen and to pick something else! Makes me very happy to be able to own a true replica as an adult. |
Crystal 8 was amazing. The show is now getting to the point where the manga took off for the rest of the arc.
|
I hear it actually gives Sailor V some *gasp* character development.
Seems kind of shocking for Crystal. Looking forward to it! I recall in the manga they suddenly gained the ability to fly around now. (and in typical Naoko fashion, only this and the next chapter and then never again) Hoping that's gone. |
I'm more Intrested I. Them going to moon and learn bout there past
|
I finally finished the R portion of the manga and I have to be honest, the manga version of R flat out sucks. It doesn't make sense half of the time and there is very little character development that is coherent. There are times when the next panel does not have anything to do with the previous one. Anyway, I'm just happy I am finally done with this arc in the manga and hopefully Crystal can fix this story's major short comings.

For those who collect the Proplica like me, the next in the line: R's Crystal Star Brooch is avaliable to pre-order right now!
http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/det...01016&page=top It features a far more accurate design then the previous Moonlight Memory Premium Bandai release, plus an accurate Crystal, lights, sounds recorded by Kotono and a lid that is removable (but designed to keep the brooch as a perfect circle) to recreate the Transformation Scenes. I wish it was the first Transformation Brooch, but I can understand why it isn't, considering that one didn't open or anything. I feel kinda bad for all the people that paid the ridiculous prices for the inaccurate Moonlight Memory version. |
Kinda disappointed they made the Crystal Star Brooch. I was hoping for Chibiusas Crystal Carillon (which I also voted for back when they had a questionnaire) or the Spiral Heart Moon Rod, but oh well. Just have to wait a while again then. It would've been cool to have a brooch that wasn't released so often yet. Maybe even the manga/SMC brooch.
Didn't care for the moonlight memory versions due to the fact that for make-up, it's just all too expensive and as a cosplayer, the gashapon brooches seem like a good alternative. As for the weapons though, Proplica is the thing to use. |
