The theme is that of journey and identity; what truly makes you you. Themes of Tsukasa's identity are rampant even when not explicitly stated -- that shot in the opening of him falling to his side as all 9 Riders' helmets flash by on top of him isn't a mistake; it's pretty critical to what the show's about.

Decade obviously had some trouble finding a consistent voice on what exactly is was saying about these things, but I'd definitely concur that it was still always trying to keep on these topics. The photography motif (which, remember, extends all the way to the Decadriver's design) fits into this in... well, probably a few ways, honestly. I feel like there's room for interpretation, but I've always seen the key being that a photograph is essentially proof of something's existence, and of course, Tsukasa takes pictures of just about everything except himself... and also they all come out weird... and all that means... something. Maybe. Decade is a hard show to get a grasp on sometimes. :p

It probably is about identity to a degree but I also doubt that much thinking went into it either.

It was the catalyst that began the phase 2 of Heisei Riders so they no longer have to compete with its super sentai siblings for toy sales. And instead have us fight against each other regarding the number theory. So bottom line the theme is Destroy to create, create to destroy.

Evolt should have had an evil catchphrase after becoming a Rider, to contrast with Sento. Something like "saa,, metsubo wo hajimeyo ka...". Come to think of it, 'Evol(ving)' is sort of an opposite to Building something, isn't it? ...I'm trying to hard to set up more parallels than necessary for what is basically a dragonball villain.

I thought he already had a catchphrase? I distinctly remember hearing a man's voice shout HELL YEAH every time he showed up onscreen. I always thought it was a little weird that the catchphrase was in English, and it definitely sounded a bit more Midwestern America than Hipster Dad's Japanese accent. Still! I certainly heard it a bunch over the run of Build!

Can't say I recall that! You might have gotten it confused with my excited wailing that was so powerful at the time of airing that it retroactively went back in time and got picked up during episode filming too.

My favorite dad in Kamen Rider? Maybe my favorite dad in Kamen Rider. (I mean, not much competition, since All Dads Are Dead, but still.) I love how many weird angles he comes in at: supportive, but manipulative; demoralizing, but gregarious; that dumb hat, but that awesome chair. He contains multitudes, you know?

His catchphrase is "Ciao" and he liked it so much he has his belt say it too.

I was thinking last night about how differently Nadeshiko was handled compared to... any other female rider.

Poppy: Side-character thrown into the spotlight to show how much she means to Emu and gives both characters some new motivation.

Nadeshiko: Yeah, so then she hip-checks a guy through a wall

Sounds the same to me. Both are quirky non-humans whose Rider abilities consist on emphasising how girly they are.

(Up front, though, a lot of it comes down to the fact that Poppy had a whole series as a supporting character to establish her motivations, fears, dreams, relationships, etc. Nadeshiko had less than half a movie.)

Nadeshiko's introduction and purpose is literally just Fourze But A Girl. She doesn't get much of a character, and what's there is meant mostly as a partner, a romantic interest.

Poppy's character is defined by how she uses the maternal instincts she's inherited to care for the people around her, and how she longs to create an identity for herself outside of those boundaries.

They're both quirky, sure (well, not Asuna, but Poppy), and some of their conception is tied to traditionally feminine attributes, but I think each of them approach it in different ways.

This idea reminds me of Parado in Ex-Aid, though Parado had the briefest main villain role.

Not much of a dark reprise in the franchise AFAIK. There's also OOO where Dr. Maki gets a less booming version of Kougami's music in the beginning of ep. 44.

I'm going to also point out how their first appearances as Riders were presented. Yes, Poppy is girly, but that wasn't the point of the scene. Instead of being like what Nadeshiko had, it's much more a character driven shock moment when we see her viciously attack Emu, who's panicking and trying to bring her back.

Nadeshiko's first scene is just "ooh look she's cute"

Nadeshiko appears exclusively in Koichi Sakamoto-directed movies. She was definitely influenced by how he likes to film women in fight scenes.

So, in the Televi-kun special for Drive; they made a very fun mockup of the Magazine cover in a corrupted world where it featured all these evil riders and villains as opposed to the heroes. Front and center you've of course got Shadow Moon, and then throughout the rest of it you've got appearances from Yuuki, Dark Kabuto, Poseidon, Glaive; even a free pack-in Shocker Grunt mask! All fun stuff.

I legitimately tried to figure this out, but evidently I couldn't quite get my brain in top gear. My assumption is that there's some deliberate joke I'm missing, but then, that issue apparently comes with a 100m (!) poster of a group shot from All Riders vs. Dai-Shocker, too, so maybe just chalk it up to how flaky a knockoff it is. Like it can't even get its own gimmick right.

One thing I've always found neat, though probably not intentional; is how Ghost and Fourze's 'faces' are the inverse of each other -- black background with orange eyes vs orange background with black eyes, along with the same general shape. Just kinda like it!
